Contested Territory: Issue 1
By: Dylan Hecht
So, here I am at the fantastic beachside offices of AllRPG, thinking of what to write for my new column. I have a few good ideas to get us started, but let’s start off with some introductions.
You can call me Stigma, though I go by plenty of other names as well. I’ve been an MMO addict since Everquest, and I’ve gone through quite a few of them. I started on EQ, then moved on to Star Wars Galaxies and Final Fantasy XI, and I’ve played everything from EVE Online to Toontown (god help you if you actually played it as well). I just wandered from MMO to MMO, liking the idea but not finding anything that really caught my eye.
However, about a year ago I found a little game that not only caught my attention, but made me a full-fledged addict. That game was World of Warcraft. It enthralled me right from the start. Perhaps it was that I loved the Warcraft universe, or that Blizzard always puts out quality product (Superman-related games notwithstanding).
In any case, I’ve played quite a lot of WoW. I’ve tried out most of the classes and all of the races. I was working on a Dwarf Paladin for quite a while. But when BC came out, I immediately switched to a Draenei Shaman. I’d always liked the Shaman class, but I wanted to play with my friends who were all Alliance.
But enough about me, let’s get down to business. I have a complaint about the way some people play their characters. I’m not talking about roleplay either. I’m talking about people who don’t use their classes’ off–spec. Sure you might be a feral druid, an enhancement shaman, a retribution paladin, or even a shadow priest, but does that mean you can’t or shouldn’t toss in a heal if it’s needed? Of course not!
As a shaman, I’m often asked to be the healing in an instance if a priest can’t be found. Sure, as an enhancement shaman it’s not the easiest thing to do. But I keep a backup set of healing and intellect gear. It’s not that hard, really - just keep extra items from quests or scan the auction house once in a while for good gear.
The same goes for Holy Paladins: grab yourself a one-hander and a shield next time you get a chance. The plate you wear makes for some decent tank gear, and if you throw up Devotion Aura, and use Righteous Defense and Consecration you ought to make a pretty good tank.
That about covers what I wanted to get into for this column. But take note hybrid classes: you are called hybrid for a reason. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Try and give healing a chance if you’re a DPS or Tank spec. Or try tanking it or DPS-ing if you are a healing spec. You may just like it more than you think.
