Embracing the Kawaii: X Reasons We Like Final Fantasy X-2
By: Richard Jude Goodness
I’ve been playing Final Fantasy X-2 nonstop since I bought it. It’s become my favorite entry into the Final Fantasy series! It’s just so much fun to play. However, some of you might still be a little hesitant about it. That’s a shame—you’re missing out on the greatest game of 2003! It’s so very kawaii—why, it even has an extended scene where Yuna dresses up as a moogle! In order to convince you spoilsports who are chickening out, we here at Editorial Goodness have prepared a list of the X reasons that we absolutely adore X-2! Prepare to be convinced beyond belief, because we know you’ll love these aspects as much as we do!
10) Leblanc: The final Fantasy Series has had a ton of campy male villains—Kefka, Kuja, Ultros, etc. But Leblanc has to be the campiest female I’ve ever seen in a game. With her two henchmen in tow—one with a fake British accent, the other with a fake Brooklyn accent—Leblanc is first the enemy you hate to love, and then the ally you love to hate. She’s also got to have the greatest character theme in the game—a swanky little number that characterizes her perfectly. Besides, how many other games include an exotic massage simulator? Oh, you’re so GOOD, loves!
9) The “Lady Luck” dressphere: Before I got the Lady Luck dressphere, Yuna was a whole level behind Rikku and Paine. I gave Yuna the Lady Luck dressphere and had her learn Double EXP. She’s now a good ten levels ahead of everyone else, and with Gillionaire, I don’t need to worry about whether or not I can afford things. It’s got some great attacks with it—enemies fall at your feet once you learn Four Dice! You folks can have your Warrior and Samurai and Black Mage, I’m going to keep Lady Luck on my side!
8) Brother: Am I the only one who thinks that Brother would fit in perfectly as a character in Moulin Rouge? The way he dances around looks like he’d be right at home in the Baz Luhrman’s masterpiece! That, coupled with his verbal faux pas—“Friendly Neighboring Gullwings!”—and his obvious schoolboy crush on Yuna make Brother a favorite. I know I’m not alone when I say that a game with Brother as the main character would be a game I’d line up to buy!
7) “Real Emotion”: How awesome is X-2’s opening scene? This is what pop concerts should really be like! Of course, the reason it’s so great is because of the brilliant “Real Emotion” that carries the scene. It’s a good song and it sets up the themes of the game! It’s such a great song that I’m actually listening to it right now! I’m so glad that Square decided to put “Eyes on Me” in FFVIII—without it paving the way, the “Real Emotion” scene could never have been possible! Thank you, Julia!
6) The Return of ATB: The battles in X-2 are quicker than Walt Flanagan’s dog! I mean, they’re super fast! It’s not like X was at all. I couldn’t stand X’s battle system—it was too slow, too controlled. Here, it almost becomes twitch gaming. I hope that for XII they go along that same route. Maybe it’ll even be an action RPG! I think Square could do a marvelous job at that!
5) Gippal’s Eye Patch: Some guy once proved that people are 50% sexier and 98.43% cooler when they wear an eye patch. Just ask any pirate. So it’s no accident that Gippal—or should we say Bart Fatima #2?—is awesome. Yes, he’s cool in his own right, but he wouldn’t be the man he is without his eye patch. I mean, if he didn’t, we’d merely say, “Oh, there’s the leader of the Machine Faction” when he appeared onscreen. However, he has the eye patch, and when he comes on we of course say, “There’s the totally awesome leader of the Machine Faction!” Nomuya-san, you’ve done it again!
4) Hypello: Okay, to be fair, Hypello appeared in X. However, they had more of a cameo role there than anything. X-2 fixes all that by giving us tons of Hypello! I think they’re so cute with their silly accents and their goofy antics. And I just love the scene where they all dive off the airship! Kawaii ^_^!!
3) “Disasteriffic”: During the course of X-2, Rikku has all these great catch phrases, such as “Oh, poopie!” and “Disasteriffic!” Yuna tries to imitate them and it’s funny because she’s not silly like Rikku. Rikku is so funny!
2) The Power of Youth: If nothing else has taught me that I, as a young member of society, can affect a change in this world, then Final Fantasy X-2 has! Spira is led by a group of people, none of whom are over 21. This both warms my heart and makes me feel old, for in a year, I will have no power. Still, I’m going to enjoy my rule—my age makes me more than qualified to take over something.
1) Those Skimpy Costumes: Oh, come on, you know you bought the game for this reason and this reason alone, right? Yeah, I knew you did! But, hey, let’s admit it. Yuna, Rikku, and Paine are hot. Yeah, baby! They’re the hottest chicks in entertainment!
With such an exhaustive list of reasons, it's no wonder that we love Final Fantasy X-2. All you naysayers, embrace the kawaii, go to your local videogame store, and buy, buy buy!
Your Playstation will thank you!
