View Full Version : Most overrated artist?

Should be an interesting thread.
Won't put up a poll because it's too subjective.
Will throw out some names though (which I may or may not agree with)
The Beatles, Metallica, Tool, The Darkness, Faith No More, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Nirvana, U2...
Or whoever.

I'd have to say the Mars Volta are pretty overrated. I saw them live when they opened for System of a Down and I couldn't make out any single instrument. It was just a huge wall of fuzzy noise. They do sound better on CD but they get too much praise for being so experimental. I think experiments fail if you can't replicate them live.

Yeah. People praise them as though they are the best band ever, and it gets annoying.
While they are a good band, they aren't nearly as good as idiots claim they are. I do enjoy their music quite often, though.

I'll go with Nirvana, as I usually do.
The Beatles. The Grateful Dead. The Rolling Stones.

I feel people hear "She Love's Me Yayaya" and other radio friendly songs and they miss out on the real gems of their albums. The Beatle's have some amazing tunes. The White Album and Sargent Pepper's are so awesome.
They are overrated though :)

I honestly have no idea who the Mars Volta is. I've always heard about them, but I don't listen to the radio very much, and when I do, once I hear something I don't like I change the channel.
My opinion of the number one most overrated musician/group is The Beatles. Of all of the songs they've made, I can count on one hand the songs I've actually liked (and the best, for me, was Imagine). I just don't get what the big deal is about them.
Runner up would have to be Metallica. When they made their S&M album, everyone was going nuts "omg it's rock with striiiiings." Yeah, it's cool and all, except that my favorite band, Superchunk, was doing rock with strings before Metallica thought about it. As for music of theirs I've liked? The Black Album... Period. I actually had it on cassette (you guys remember those things, right? ;)) when I was younger...
I don't really know if there are more bands that I feel are overrated, I'll have to think about it...
LOVE the Beatles and the Rolling Stones <3

I may be a huge Mars Volta fan, but even then, I don't think that's a very fair assessment. I haven't seen them live myself, but I've listened to plenty of fan recordings that still hold up just fine. There are differences between a live show and studio recordings, and some things either can't or don't need to be replicated live. From a technical standpoint, I don't see how their live performances suffer any more than any other band. I appreciate the intensity that goes into their performances, and no one can deny they've got that.

They're not extremely well-known, at least compared to any other band one might call overrated. Plus they obviously don't get much play on the radio, what with most songs being at least five minutes. They're probably one of the most polarizing bands ever. It's kind of funny.

The Beatles?!!? But they're SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!111 I guess the thing with the beatles is that a lot of the big songs I guess aren't all that great. Considering the huge fame and the massive album sales, I would imagine "Hello, Goodbye" or "Love Me Do" make 'em seem super overrated. But then you go and hear all of the albums and thay're all so great, and their stuff is so varied too. The White Album, Sgt. Pepper's (I mean, For The Benefit of Mr. Kite? AMAZING), Abbey Road (the inbedded 'concept' album in it, beauty). I'd list songs but they're far too many. I think for most people, if given enough time, start enjoying the Beatles. I remember a year ago I moved into the university residence and my future roomates had barely heard beatles song and had no interest in them. "Old people music", you know. But they sure converted, and became avid listeners little by little over the course of the year.
Anyway, I guess for me the prime overrated band is probably Aerosmith. They have their good moments, but it's one of those bands that a lot of people obsess over that I never really got into it. Maybe I just never really gave them enough of a chance.

I feel a bands records should be able to be replicated live, if not, then why are you trying to sell it to fans? With the digital progression of music, you can make almost any noise and combination work well. To me experimental sounds and techniques kind of lost their edge after programs like Garage Band and programs became involved. Volta has too many instruments, and way too many tracks on a song. When you try and have 10 members performing complicated lead type progressions, it just doesn't turn out live. Having bongos and drums together, several guitars, pianos, other strings and such makes for a mismach of sound. They get so much praise from Rolling Stone, and NME for being the most innovative 'prog' rock band, but they can't replicate it live. I don't know what part of an artists' CD doesn't need to be replicated live, but maybe you can tell about that one. Files from a soundboard are alot different than what you hear live as well, since they just get the feeds from the amps and monitors, not resonance from soundwaves that travel across the stadium.

So you're saying a band should replicate the song the exact same way every time?

No? I'm saying you should be able to make out the instrumentals, lyrics, and concepts of a song when played live. There's too many things going on for anyone to make out any particular sound. The vocals are blurred so much that it's just abunch of echoy pitch to the audience, and the three guitar riffs all sound blurred as well. I like when bands switch up songs, I just want to be able to make it out.

I'm actually kind of surprised Abom didn't list Metallica. They seem like the kind of band he would hate to see admired, but maybe he, like me, appreciates the old albums. Or maybe he pretends Metallica don't exist, which is kind of cool too.
I'll go with the Rolling Stones as #1, U2, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Dream Theater, Zeppelin and many more.
I pretty much consider a band overrated if they have more than 4 dozen songs, and only 4 of them don't blow ass.

No, I legitimately feel that the artists I listed are overrated. How am I coming across as someone who likes to hate everything popular? I've hardly had any input in this thread save the list in question. Fact is, I could list bullshit like Nickelback, but I don't really see them as being overrated on account of their being the butt of everyone's negative jokes anyway.
Also, just because I feel an act is overrated doesn't mean I don't like them anyway. Is it a crime not to feel like Led Zeppelin is the ultimate rock band?
That's pretty much exactly who he is.
I enjoy being contrary for the sake of argument, sometimes, but otherwise I'm pretty upfront about how I feel about things. You don't know me that well.

If you're in your 20s and you still find yourself in love with them, it's time to sit back and reflect.
Who would you consider to be a band that is under-rated that bests the talent and music of a similarly genre'd over-rated band? Ala if you feel that Dave Mathews Band is over-rated (I agree), what band does what he does better that deserves more recognition?
