With which artform or medium of communication do you have the strongest connection?

Or, which medium is most likely to affect you in a significant way?

Perhaps via a direct emotional impact, or through a more thoughtful interaction.

There's no denying that television is the least artful medium. Not that there aren't good shows out there. But that may change someday, some say we are moving in the direction of TV shows being taken more seriously, and I don't doubt it.

I love music, literature, and movies equally, more or less. In different ways, of course.

It depends on the era in question.

Overall, I'd say literature has a more profound impact on me. When I was young, we didn't have videogames (we eventually got a PS2 but I was already in high school by that time) and I didn't like TV so I read voraciously. I learned to read when I was 3 and tested on a high school reading level at the beginning of 1st grade, so I really skipped over most of the kid's books and went straight to young adult literature and classic novels. The books that have had the most impact on me are the Anne of Green Gables novels (there are 7), Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, His Dark Materials trilogy, and The Sun Also Rises. The only modern book among those are His Dark Materials because so many modern books just suck, with a few exceptions (also including Harry Potter).

Modern music, however, strongly affects me as well. I listen to mostly indie bands, underground hip hop, and rock en espanol which obviously touch me more than bands from 30 or 40 years ago.

For me, literature is much more timeless than music. You also have to work harder to glean importance out of literature- you can't just passively receive it.

Not to be flip, but is it your job to keep threads strictly within what may be narrowly outlined in the original post? I think I addressed the question(s) in part but perhaps not in full. I said I hold other art forms above television; those have more of a connection for me. I'm not prepared to go into how every other medium affects me emotionally.

I wasn't trying to be rude. I just found your response funny.

"I enjoy them equally... more or less... differently..." Hehe, make up your mind, you silly Moogle.

As much as I love a good book, my preference lies with movies. Even as a little kid I loved watching movies, they were special and still are. Nothing feels the way I feel after a good movie.

For as long as I can remember, I have had one sure fire escape, and that's books. Even when I was little, I remember sitting in my room reading Little House On the Prairie books, hell, I even remember my Dr Seuss days, thinking Green Eggs and Ham was so profound.

As I got a little older, music began to have more of an impact on me too, I'd be feeling down and throw on some Crue or some Metallica, and it all seemed to go away.

But all in all, I'd have to say books have made the most impact on my life, and still do, with music coming in a close second.

Music by far. Not that I don't like literature or movies, of course, but there's no denying that music just strikes a chord (SDIUHASOIDUHSDOIADSHS). Music really causes strange physical reactions in me, it can change my mood, gives me goosebumps, make me wanna headbang, etc. I also love music because I can listen to it almost permanently: while walking, sleeping, eating, reading, studying, having sex, hanging out, etc. A lot of my best friends I've made through music. It brings me closer to my family (especially my mom, my sister, my cousins and 2 of my uncles, we all have similar tastes) It creates atmosphere. In my opinion, it's simply humanity's greatest gift to itself.

For me, it's music. I can't even begin to describe how much I love it. It speaks to me more than any other medium, and I enjoy it more than any other medium. I do enjoy literature almost as much.

I can listen to a certain song and it can inspire me to carry out mundande tasks, and help me get over crappy feelings I have built up inside of me. I can't say the same about books or television.

Literature, and music have the most impact on me. I'm not a fan of television because it just seems brain numbing, I like some series but I watch those on the Internet.

Observing and interacting with other people whether they are a friend or somebody I do not know.

I'm too scared and self conscious when I'm around people I haven't seen before, but after some small talk I just become an ass hole to those people provided I don't like them.

Socializing with strangers isn't my forte.

Well, since it is 2 AM and I've nothing better to do, I'll reply to this archaic topic.

Literature has won me over. And, considering my aspirations to become a novelist and all that jazz, it seems appropriate enough. Overcoming snobbery and self-hatred seem to be the biggest obstacles. I also like theatre, but I haven't gotten the chance to explore much.

Seinfeld is--just fyi--the best thing that ever happened to television.

Denying my above statement will only lead to your death. Be aware.

I'm not sure. It would be pretty close between music and literature with movies close behind. Like Moogleman said, television is hardly artful and it doesn't usually evoke emotions in me beyond laughter. However, music can evoke many emotions and memories and literature let's you use your imagination which can easily do the same.

So, it's a really tough choice between the two for me.

BULLSHIT. Television is just the most exposed medium: it's on hundreds or thousands of channels, in every part of the world, 24 hours a day x seven days a week x 365 days a year.

Next time you're at the book store, or at fuckin' Best Buy, or browsing the local movie listings, take a strong look at how much there is filling the gaps between the pieces of "art."

Anyway, for me, it's like a HARDCOVER LITERATURE boner wrapped in 35mm, 70mm, and 65/15 film stock, slathered in music juice and delivered on a flatscreen television. With some GOD-DAMNED DUAL-SHOCKS added as a video game garnish.
Which is to say, "Bend over, Peggy Sue, because daddy's bringing home the whole enchilada!"

Seinfeld is--just fyi--the best thing that ever happened to television.

Rod Serling and Omar Little and Tom Servo just gangbanged your precious Seinfeld to death. Sorry. Hold true to your statement, though, because there's still a long line of better television rather upset they haven't gotten their turn.

That says absolutely nothing about quality though.

You're right, of course there are loads of crap for every medium. But my point was that good TV shows are much harder to come by than books and movies.

And I take back my statement about television going in the right direction. When half the shows out there are "reality" and resemble "I Love Money", you know something's wrong. Even the History Channel, National Geographic (Nat Geo? What a joke), and all the Discovery Channels aren't immune.

Same here. Well, I think with me it's just that my family wasn't big into TV and so I just never picked up the habit. With the questionable signal and lack of cable in my area I haven't had TV for well over a decade. There are a few shows I like but I just watch them via other means.

I like to read although recently I've been addicted to listening to lectures instead. Still, books probably have the greatest impact. Music not so much although it's something I plan to work on. I do like to listen to music but I just don't get into it like some.

Ho hum, here we go again, gentlemen. Honestly, Atlas, you have been acting like you're on your rag lately or something. I, unlike so many others here, actually like you when you're not trying to prove yourself to be some sort of badass. Stop trying so hard, for real, man. And I fully expect some sort of ridiculous response from you, so if you insist on pressing on, please be original. Surprise me with a little maturity and intelligence. ;)

I also realized I never responded to this thread to begin with, haha. I can honestly say I love all forms of media; yes, even television. They all provide some form of escape to me, and sometimes some form of education. I love getting lost in a movie or a song, or relating to a character from a tv show or a book. I suppose I see the art in almost anything. Which can be good and bad. I would say out of all of them, I am most "addicted" to music and literature though.

I think I'm going to have to go with "Other". I basically don't watch TV very much or Movies for all they are worth. At one point I hadn't been to the movie theatre for around 7-8 years. I sometimes leave my TV on just for the background noise but usually that' s about it. I think Simpsons is the only show I will sit down and watch, even then anything past season 12 and I won't watch it as the show really started to slide for me around that point.

As for music, I think it's mostly that I don't care about music as a whole. I now officially own 7 CDs all of which are video game Soundtracks. I'm not sure what's the big deal about music for everyone but I know it's a huge deal for most. Same goes for movies, I own 0 DVDs. When I moved I sold the few that I had and I don't have any plans on getting more.

If something isn't game related I mostly don't have an interest in it. The only medium outside of that where I might have some interest is in comic books. Mainly because I grew up with them as a kid.

Books have always been very special to me. Even though I enjoy a good movie or tv show as much as anyone and even though I love music, none of these can compare to reading for me. Without company, without power, without money or new gadgets I will always be able to read. It is my source for information as well as my escape from reality. Classics that I read years ago mean just as much to me today as they did the first day I picked them up. Memories of where I was and what was happening in my life when I read a certain book tend to stick with me.

It's one of the few things I couldn't possibly imagine doing without.

Atlas
03-15-2009, 07:21 AM
I know exactly what you mean. The Lord of the Flies was the sole reason I didn't try shrooms when I first had the chance. Right after reading it a friend came over to my house and presented me with mushrooms, you know, the kind that make you hallucinate.

It was only a slight deterrent. I ended up experimenting a couple months later. This was all less than a year ago too.

Another example about how reading has impacted my life is when I read Anthem. Despite what some may think, I have come to disdain Ayn Rand, most of Ayn Rand, that is. She stepped up to the plate big time when she presented her Objectivism philosophy; nevertheless, her unpleasant, overbearing facade is still what she's most known for.

Anyways, back to my story. Anthem. It really helped me in my search for myself--for figuring out my meaning, yet simultaneously maintaining reasonable practicality while applying the belief--the belief that I, in some fashion, am the estimator and contributer to my own fate. This occured not more than a few months ago.
