Out today. Bought it.
I have not played it yet, but I am pretty fucking excited. . . even if there is just a little change. Anyone else buy it or will be buying it soon?
Greatest RPG ever made? Probably. But I won't be buying it for a third time. There would have to be some real substantial upgrades to the game to warrant my purchasing the game again. I don't have a Nintendo DS anyway.

My aunt is buying my 5 year old niece a DS for xmas and I am gonna buy her some crap game with Dora the Explorer or whatever the fuck is in vogue these days. Also I am now gonna start buying some DS games to play on her DS (even if it is gay metallic pink ds lite) but wont buy this, I'll just watch the new ending on youtube, as it would be the only new thing this thing would have after i unlocked all the endings years ago.

Well, it has been a very long time since I have played CT, and the only legit version I had was on the PlayStation, so it was a must buy for me. I am having tons of fun with it, and the game looks great on the DS. Haven't noticed anything new other than the arena and special features, but like I said, it has been a reaaaallly long time.

Yeeeea, I got it yesterday. I'm really enjoying it even though I've played the game millions of times already. I just replayed it this summer before I knew it was coming out for the DS so the dialogue is pretty fresh in my mind and I've noticed the differences between the old and new translation. For one thing, many times in the old translation when they would have said "Sir Magus" they say "the Fiendlord." I also like how all of the main menu icons are on the touch screen, so if I want to save I just kinda slide my thumb over, or if I want to use an item on the map I just do the same thing with the opposite thumb. Even though I own the Playstation version and have played the SNES version via an emulater, I'm pretty happy I bought this version.
I love seeing the little guys on my little DS.
Oh, they also changed the names of a bunch of the items, which was pretty strange at first.

That's exactly the reason I got the game too. The thought of CT on a hand held, with no load times, was too much to pass up. I'm busy with another game at the moment though so I'm making my girl friend play through it. EVERYONE needs to play CT at least once. :D

Magus just joined the party, and Chrono is back, so I am running around doing all of the extra sidequests and new ones, too. Pretty fun. The new dungeon is not until New Game +, but I think that will be no problem since I want to run through it a few more times anyway for the extra endings. So far, I am having a blast.

More people would have bitched about a remake, seeing as there hasn't been a real port of this game since FF Chronicles (I think).

I don't think so. One direct port is enough, I think. What would there be to complain about if they remade Chrono Trigger like they did with Final Fantasy IV?

People still like to be able to play the classics, and a lot of people want to be able to do it legitimately. If it were up to me, I think the best route would be to have a remake with the original in the same package. They did it with CV Rondo of Blood for PSP. I don't know if the DS cartridges really have the space for that, but still. They should have done that for the FF Origins remakes for PSX and GBA, shouldn't have been too hard.

Actually, I've been tempted to dust off my old Super NES and play through Chrono Trigger again myself. But then I'd probably end up doing the same for Chrono Cross, and I don't have that kind of time.
Still... very tempting.

A. It does not try to continue directly from Chrono Trigger and/or Cross's plots.
B. Masato Kato stays the fuck away from it, unless he's editing Yuji Horii's story again.

Final Fantasy IV was not the greatest looking game. It didn't lose a lot of detail going to 3D. Chrono Trigger was basically the pinnacle of its genre and platform for its time, whereas the DS is pushing graphics from the beginning of the 3D era. It's not hard to see why you'd lose things in the transition from great 2D to mediocre 3D.

I'd love to see a Chrono Trigger sequel in similar fashion to the recent Mega Man game. Same graphics and all, but different areas/story/abilities/whatever. I certainly wouldn't complain as long as they didn't reuse all kinds of sprites like lazy bastards.

Such a great game still after years and years. I know a lot of people here have suggested that they should have updated the graphics and such, but I'm perfectly content with a port. Plus it's on a Handheld now and that's a big deal for me. One thing I think that they should have included would have been a quick save feature. There's been a few times where I could have used one.
Nickoten
12-08-2008, 02:59 AM
I'd like to mention that the added content is pretty uninspired, and the new plot elements are delivered in about as half assed a manner as possible. It doesn't bother me too much, other than that new players might get to those things and have them ruin their opinion of the game overall.

I agree. They should make a sequel that follows a different set of time travelers rather than trying to directly build off of the other games. It would be so easy to pull off: Gaspar says when you first meet him that others are frequently dropping in at the End of Time.

Yeah, that'd probably be best. Still, I'd really love a better understanding as to what happened to the original characters in Chrono Trigger... and even Chrono Cross, I guess. They'd have to integrate that into the new story some way.

Actually from what I've been reading Robo's Arm wasn't always like that. I remember seeing somewhere that Robo and Ayla got beefed up quite a bit for this version.
EDIT: Oh and I agree with Lag, if they do another game I want to know that the fuck happened to Marle and Crono

Did they? I thought the verdict was still out on that? But you know what pisses me off most about the whole Porre thing? I swear to God if you go back and play the game, the real original SNES game, back before they tried to change things, there was NO reason at all to think that Porre was even a different nation. I always thought it were part of Guardia, until I played CC, and all of the sudden I was like WTF? How is that possible?

It's too bad that more people aren't taking such a shining to the game coming to the DS. I think it's awesome that it's finally available as a portable game and fits so well into the DS library.
Oh and Lag was mentioning the games sales, they were over 300,000 in Japan last I checked so far. Seems to be alright for the game. It will likely be around a million when it's all over.

Well, after playing Chrono Trigger DS, I believe there will be another Chrono game. I have my own theories about Porre and such, but I do not know how to use the "spoiler tag", and I am currently playing through Chrono Cross again to freshen my mind on a few things. However, the extra dungeons in 65,00,000 B.C. and 600 A.D. are ridiculous, and honestly, horrible, in my opinion, for an attempt as an extra dungeon and relating to anything Chrono Trigger/Cross wise other than the "Dragon Tear".
Either way, Chrono Trigger DS has provided muches of fun for the portable system, and I am loving the game to death more than ever.

Maybe it's just me but I've found most of the translation to be pretty close to the original except for a few name changes of places. Most of the name changes were to the original japanese (SNES) names in the first place. Although all the "Fiendlord" talk felt weird and slightly annoying.
Nickoten

There are quite a few changes - all of Magus's dialog is pretty different now, and name changes for more than just places - equipment and such too. Some more racy stuff like Ayla possibly being bisexual is intact here, as well as Toma's liquor. Death Peak is more explicitly stated to be Lavos's outer shell after emerging to the surface of the planet, and Gaspar's last message ("This is a battle between Lavos and the very planet itself!") pretty much makes it undeniable that the Entity is the planet, whereas his last line - "This is a battle between Lavos and the world!" or something - made it a bit more ambiguous, since "the world" can mean humans, too.

I only just got started on 12000 BC (or what ever that new name of the era is) and started to notice the different item names. Magus hasn't been a big enough player in the game at this point to really see the difference in his dialogue as well. So perhaps I will notice it more as I continue to play the game.
I still think the background music in 12,000 BC after the Fall of Zeal is the best relaxation music ever.
I still need to pick the game up, although I am holding up because there have been so many games coming out recently that they take precedence over something I already own and have played already.
I did get my roommate to buy it though, and he's loving it. And he normally hates RPGs.

About the 12,000BC music, I agree. I like listening to Mitsuda's The Brink of Time album while I am playing it. . . especially when I am doing quests in 65,000,000BC. I can't stand the music. It gets on my nerves.

After playing more of the game I can see the differences in Magus' translation. Yet I'm not particularly fond of it. He use to be a lot cooler, but now it seems as though they directly translated the words from Japanese to English and there is no real personalized character to his dialogue. I've started to notice the differences in item names and other things as well.

To me, he acts like a spoiled kid raised by a mother like Queen Zeal who suddenly has access to the power to lash out at the being who seemingly ruined his childhood. The progression from Janus to Magus is so much smoother here that I almost didn't want to name him Magus when I got him. In the old translation, on the other hand, he seemed to just have a lot of really awkward lines that seemed to be meant to portray him as some kind of badass, but it just never worked for me.
Sushi_b
01-11-2009, 03:46 PM
I can understand that point Nick, that said though, Magus became the leader of the fiends. He was elevated into a badass not only by his lust for power or anger over his family (Schala in particular) but by Ozzie and the fiends. He started to live much like his mother in a sense in that he has an endless desire to find and destroy Lavos. I still got that feeling from the original translation. He was a spoiled brat, but he still changed as he grew up. As I've said already, I just felt that the lines felt like they actually came from someone taking the translation and putting some fire to them rather then just straight up translating them directly.
Is anyone else still playing the game? I finally got the main ending and have started to get some of the other ones as well. I tried to play the dungeon that appears in 65,000,000 BC but I got so fed up with the running back and forth for nothing that I stopped.

That particular bonus dungeon is a real pain and your rewards are not really worth it. The other one is much better/more interesting (including a snowy area where the song "Singing Mountain", which was not included in the SNES or PSX Chrono Trigger games is used), so give that one a shot once you beat the game once.
The 'other last boss' which shows up after you beat THAT dungeon is fun and you get a great sword from beating it. And some Magus dialogue which you will either love or not care much for.

I find all of the new dungeons annoying, but I want to beat the new end boss so I'm making my way grudgingly through them. It's taking a long time because I no longer find playing the game as enticing and I just borrowed Gears of War, so Chrono Trigger is on the backburner.

Yeah I've got the original CT 3 disk set so I had heard Singing Mountain before. Before the DS release I had wondered where that song/part of the game would have fit in. I'm sure that the original content wasn't the same as what we got in the DS version.
I was reading up on CT a little while ago and spoiled the extra boss story by accident. I'm still looking forward to seeing it myself though.
