Your all-time favourite movies. Your recent favourite movies. What's on your radar?

Top 5

City of God
Fellowship of the Ring
The Princess Bride
Princess Mononoke
Pulp Fiction

What I consider to be my favourite movies tends to be determined by the re-watchability of a film. The movies I have listed in my top 5 and those below are the kinds of movies I can watch repeatedly and often gain more respect and admiration for with successive viewings.

Other all-time favourites: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Apocalypse Now, Big Fish, Cool Runnings, Ghost in the Shell, Hero, Kill Bill, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Planet of the Apes (1968), Road to Perdition, Seven Samurai

For the record, that other thread shouldn't have been closed. I had just posted in it before it was closed, Hyde, and I didn't feel the mild bickering was that big of a deal, as I'm sure you could tell. Thanks for going against my better judgement in front of the entire board.

In fact, I'm going to talk to you about this later.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's still curious as to why Vlad thinks Donnie Darko is the cat's ass.

You were being incredibly far from Impartial and if you don't like what I did, I'm sorry, but I don't regret it.

He, like everyone else here, is entitled to think whatever he wants. I enjoyed Donnie Darko myself. If you didn't...hey, fine. As the saying goes....."That's why Baskin Robbins has 32 flavors...." Because not everyone likes the same thing and they don't need to justify to you, to Dreamless, to ANYONE why they do....

I'm gonna say this again...no one HAS to defend their choices and no one else needs to attack them for it....which is not to say someone can't disagree. Saying "Oh I hate that movie...." is a lot different than saying "You're dumb for liking that movie."

We need a ****ing reality show. We just need Dreamless to join us again and we could have a dandy little free-for-all.

Also, thread closed or not, if you want to attack someone's opinion on this forum go right ahead, but if you're a bonafide asshole about it, I'm on the defending commitee and I'll throw rocks at your testacles.

Oh, and...

Terminator 2: JD
Fight Club
Saving Private Ryan
High Fidelity
Groundhog's Day
City of Lost Children

It was a short cameo, he was just there to teach Ben Affleck about how important it is to be a father instead of getting a high paying job and providing in much better ways to his kid which would make him a better father. Instead he walks out of the interview and goes on to play a part in Sweeney Todd with his daughter.

There seem to be a lot of Tim Burton fans around here. I like some of his movies a lot. Others not so much. I certainly respect directors that manage to stamp a signature on their work just by the way they film. Regardless of whether I like the movies or not, it's something I can appreciate. Burton is one for sure, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, the Coen brothers, etc as far as the modern ones are concerned.

There is a fine line between questioning and criticizing. Questioning someone's tastes is all good, it can probably make you understand what the person sees in the, in this case, movie in subject, which can lead to making people look at it from another point of view. But if you're just being argumentative about it then it turns to criticism which really should not happen. If you want to question someone, then do it with respect.

Not much, really. Interesting movie in that it at least it can keep your attention for a while, but they do a really bad job of establishing what the film is trying to do. There's lots of references to time travel, alternate universes, and prescience, but it eventually comes off as rushed.

The ambiguous ending would have worked better if there was more for you to make an educated guess on. Maybe if the movie was intended to leave you completely blank it wouldn't be such a sticky problem for me, but it just seems like every time I watch it I can never correlate what's happening on the screen and what happens in the end.

And for that matter, I've had it explained to me dozens of times, and usually in the same manner, and it still just doesn't make sense. Maybe I should just be less skeptical about it, and kind of accept it as a pastiche type of film, but if I resorted to that, I'd have to apply the same rationale to something like Smoking Aces, and you'll never catch me trying to enjoy that bullshit.

Crash and The Deer Hunter are interesting comparisons.

I watched about an hour of Crash before I gave up on it. I just don't have the fortitude to be beaten over the head with a directors opinion. It does plenty of bitching about social issues, but never offers any insight as to the cause. It even goes as far as to present social problems through stereotype, which I feel kinda contradicts the message that the director so obviously wants us all to hear.

The Deer Hunter, on the other hand, is engaging. Thrilling, even. I remember the first time I saw it. It was hard to sit through. There wasn't an overall defined message and the director let the characters and the action speak for itself. The decision on what lesson to learn from the film is up to the viewer. It's much more personal, in that regard.

Similar to my recommendation of Sansho the Bailiff earlier.
