View Full Version : Au Revoir!

Atlas

With school on its way I probably won't have any spare time, which means no crazy antics with you all any longer (sad, I know). I know I haven't been around much, even now, but with both work and school, I won't even have a portion of time to waste.

I know all of you will miss me so, so very much, but do not fear ... I will be in your hearts ... your cold, cold hearts. :P

Well, it was fun.

Au revoir.

Really, everyone has spare time they spend on the net in an utterly useless way. Claiming you don't have any time whatsoever to drop round here is the biggest pile of horse manure around.

Amen to that. I've always thought these threads were stupid.

Anyway, if you're still lurking around Atlas, which you probably will be, I'll be ready at the virtual chess board.

Unless an allrpger is moving to a third world country with no internet, "goodbye" threads are silly.

Lol.

Actually...

I forgot my password on purpose to avoid coming back (because I wanted more time for myself and school), but I decided to come back the same day.

Took the opportunity to conjure up Bananafish.

Yum.

Oh, and inari, you're kind of a bitch. I say that in the nicest way. :)

Inari

You know what I just realized? If I read Atlas' posts with a robot narration in my head, it sounds alright. Like if a robot wrote what Atlas writes, that would be pretty awesome. But he's not a robot. He's a human.

Atlas
02-10-2009, 09:47 PM
No. Bananafish is a character from J.D. Salinger's short story, "Perfect Day For Bananafish."

Gosh, you dumbass.

Inari
02-10-2009, 09:52 PM
Hey it's not our fault you're now permanently associated with Electric Banana. Like some sort of homage to her. The two of you did have a special something.

You crazy son of a bitch, you cant read J. D. Sallinger, how the fuck would you know that?

Stop being an attention whore and take it. It's all in good fun, Atlas; they're not even being assholes, your just taking it as such because you're sensitive.

I see how it is. You can call me an oriental Liz but I call you Electric Bananafish and all of a sudden no means no.

Atlas
02-11-2009, 03:15 AM
God damn it.

Fine.

And yes, King, I am sensitive. Woe is me. Mai, I like you, but King is right, I'm sensitive. You're wittier than I am, and I take things personally, like your comments about my "stilted writing style."

I'll take it, though.

Insulting them would be futile.

Inari

Hey don't take it personally. Consider it legit criticism or defend yourself. I told Priest4hire the same thing about his writing style like a year ago. You don't see him bitching.

To be fair, he sounds less like a robot and more like a really self-absorbed and unapproachable teacher, but stilted is stilted.

If the priority of this message board were to try and analyze stylistic form then I would take it as such. Although, given the circumstance (it's a gaming forum), your motive behind such an accusation is the only thing that interests me. Although, I'll try to have more of an open mind next time. You, on the other hand, might want to re-think your methods, if the case is you even give two shits about reception.

Inari

I went to the movies with my friends a couple of weeks ago to see My Bloody Valentine and while we were waiting in line one of the girls whipped out this book she bought called "100 words to make you sound smarter". Aside from the fact that most of the words are at a high school reading comprehension level, it should have been named "100 words to make you sound stupid". Nothing makes you sound more stupid and contrived than trying to use obscure words in every day conversation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDKUxkw_kQw

If you really and truly don't see or care that your writing style is beyond stilted, then I just feel bad for you. It would be like if I said that I had an enormous passion for videogames, but then all I did was mash buttons, and didn't know that I was the worst player on the face of the earth. On the bright side your posts are always unintentionally funny.

Atlas
02-13-2009, 01:59 AM
You've got to be exaggerating.

Ok, ok... let me give you the benefit of the doubt here. If you would be so kind as to direct me to the path of unstilted writing, it would most appreciated. And yes, I'm asking for informative advice; make it personal.

Inari
02-13-2009, 10:09 AM
If the priority of this message board is about idea exchange and not about criticizing writing style, then it should be blatantly obvious when someone's writing in a really self-conscious and overworked way. The hallmark of a great writer is someone who can express an idea, narrative, or dialogue in a way that removes them as the writer from the minds of the people reading their words. That is--all people see and imagine is ideas, situations, settings, conversation, etc. Not the effort that the writer put into it. Writing is an art form, and bad writers punch through the fourth wall and wave their arms around in front of the audience.

I don't even know how to explain how *not* to overwork your own writing. But especially on a forum like this where we're just all casually talking to each other it shouldn't even be an issue. I guess step one would be to try to mimic casual speech as much as possible, unless an obscure phrase or word really makes a point. Phrases like "if you would be so kind as to" or "it would be most appreciated" aren't commonly used anymore except by old women. So by using these phrases, you're conveying that you have the sensibility of an old woman.

Hopefully this makes sense. There's a big difference between being self-conscious about your writing (which leads to overcompensation) and self-awareness (which leads to self-editing). Usually less is more.

Blue, you just got Punked! AllRPG isn't even real and we're all robots! :p

Oh, and Mai: That is actually how I talk... =/ Lol... it really isn't being contrived here. I could reverse to my stoner monologue, but fuck that shit. :P

Although, I really did take all of that in. Which you should feel thankful for, because it can be a hassle for me to take advice when it's personal and not some ambiguous, philosophical statement that just makes me feel pretty.
