Yeah. You read that correctly. The U.S. Government strikes again with undeniable stupidity that needs to be halted.

A federal law that will soon go into effect could have some startling consequences, including the possible banning of children from libraries unless certain books are pulled from the shelves.

Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act books for children will have to be tested for lead. The law is called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and it is designed to protect children all over the country from the dangers of lead.

Discuss.

This is shocking. Children go into libraries? WHAT?

Yeah, let's all ride the government's giant [CENSORED 'CAUSE I'M AT WORK] until we see obvious unintended consequences (http://www.forbes.com/opinions/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html) like children not being able to go into public libraries.

It wouldn't be so bad if the current ruleset didn't require books to be tested....$300 to $600 per book, and it destroys the book. There needs to be some revision.

How else are they gonna know about the lead?

Since the trace amount of lead you can pick up from the print in a book is far less than the amount of lead you're exposed to in a pencil, you can be relatively sure.....or are they gonna ban #2's you think too?

The NSA must be behind this.

So what you mean is it shouldn't apply to books altogether?

Heh, I've still got a game controller that was recalled for lead content. I don't know what to do with it. At one time I'd use it with a plastic baggy covering it, after finding out about the recall.

On topic, the whole thing sounds incredibly ridiculous. Safety's important but we have to look at practicality, and the big picture.

I handle lead batteries on a daily basis and reload lead bullets every week.

Mothers should stop forcing their kids to grow up as a bunch of pussies.

The PTA must be on its period again.
