Is 2009 going to give RPG fans a year to forget or remember? Looking at the list of titles that should be released this year it could be slim pickings. I suppose that the argument could be made that way for 2008 as well.

Top titles:
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Suikoden Tierkreis
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest IX (probably)
Dissidia Final Fantasy (probably)
Star Ocean 2nd Evolution
White Knight Chronicles

Maybe we will get World Destruction, and announcements of some games to come like Mass Effect 2 or something else.

That's all I can manage to come up with. Doesn't look very promising unless I am missing a bunch of games along the line.

I didn't play any RPGs in 2008 and I probably won't in 2009. Maybe the new Suikoden is worth a look, but I still have to play Suikoden Tactics and I haven't even picked up Suikoden V yet. :\

Not really soft, considering...well, here's the DS list full of games that are hitting in the near future with RPG elements or are strict RPGs:

02.10.09 Legacy of Ys: Books I & II (Atlus/Interchannel-Holon/Dreams)
02.10.09 Retro Game Challenge (XSEED/Namco) *Guadia Quest!
02.16.09 Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (Nintendo/Intelligent Systems)
02.17.09 Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Sqaure Enix/Arte Piazza/Cattle Call)
02.24.09 Blue Dragon Plus (Ignition/AQi/Mistwalker/Brownie Brown)
02.xx.09 Avalon Code (XSEED/MMV/Matrix)
03.10.09 The Dark Spire (Atlus/Success)
03.17.09 Suikoden Tierkreis (Konami)
03.17.09 Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (Square Enix/tri-Ace)
03.17.09 Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Stardust Accelerator: World Championship 2009 (Konami)
03.22.09 Pokemon Platinum Version (Nintendo/Game Freak/Creatures)
03.24.09 Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Square Enix)
03.24.09 Steal Princess (Atlus/MMV/Climax)
April - Class of Heroes

Don't forget we just got Ar Tonelico 2: Melody of Metafalica, Mana Khemia: Student Alliance PSP is on the way, X-Edge is coming (possibly March), Mana Khemia 2 will be localized, Star Ocean IV, Dissidia: Final Fantasy is coming mid-2009, World Destruction is coming here as Sands of Destruction in Fall 2009, Phantasy Star Zero is coming Winter 2009, Arc Rise Fantasia, and so on.

As far as I'm concerned, we've just gotten started for the year :)

And Patapon 2, with its rhythm/strategy/RPG mish-mash.

Nintendo Power's newest issue recently was called the "RPG SPECIAL ISSUE". There will be loads of them this year, worry not!

It is now my favorite magazine, and its not because its pro-nintendo or I actually care about their reviews, but because of their coverage and the interview section. Lately they've done big interviews with my most favorite people in the gaming world: Uematsu, Miyamoto, Takahashi brothers of Shining Force / Mario Golf / Tennis fame, and many more.

I want FF: CC games and DQ 5 the most.

Seems to be too many if you ask me. Forgot to mention SO2, though a port...*sigh*...I can't wait til Squenix has ported/remade every game they already made, so we can get SOME more new material! Speaking of which ps3 owners (and PC) get Last Remnant this year.

It doesn't really matter how many RPGs come out this year, I won't have time to play them all anyway. There's RPGs that came out over a decade ago that I still haven't had the opportunity to play yet.

Dragon Age is coming out this year. Thats all I need :). And now that Bioware has EA's resources I guess Mass Effect 2 could possibly come out this year. Damn that would be awesome.

Looking outside of just what the DS offers lolinternet there doesn't appear to be that many games coming out for home consoles. The PS3's line up in particular is quite disappointing so far.

The DS line up is similar to what we've seen in the past year. Lots of titles to choose from but a number of them could well be hit or miss.

Drunken Monk: I just zipped over to Kotaku and there will be talk of Mass Effect 2 this year but an announcement is supposedly unlikely. I'm sure Bioware is focusing on the Star Wars: TOR more so then any other project right now.

Speaking of which I cant wait to get my hands on Star Wars. There are a lot of people who dont seem to have much faith in it but if its anything like Guild Wars Im gonna be all over it. There need to be more mmorpgs that focus on a core story line.

As for Mass Effect 2 I still think it may be possible. If they dont make any major changes to the engine 2 years could be a realistic development time.

It's for sure possible but it would have to be really late this year I'm sure. Bioware has 2 divisions now, I have no idea which one made the original game though. If it was Bioware Edmonton then there is a better chance to seeing the game soon. I think I read that Bioware Austin is making Star Wars: TOR.

I'm sure you have not noticed but most RPG's these days are MMORPG's. Its kinda sad, I truly think that the genre is dying off. Alot of people who played RPG's were loners. And now with the boom of online RPG's It has sort of changed that. Indeed there are even women on WOW. It depress's me, RPG's will still be around in my opinion. Just not as predominent as they were in the past.
