View Full Version : RPG Cliche's you wish were real

You know how most RPGs have the same formula to them all. Which of those facts in almost every RPG do you wish were applicable to your every day life?

I wish that fighting monsters and gaining valuable money were real. I can only imagine how much easier it could be if that's all it took to get money in the real world. That said, perhaps everyone would be rich beyond their wildest dreams and cause for some serious inflation.

Let's see. Having the character growth of RPG characters would be nice. In a matter of a couple weeks at most I could master multiple skills and develop near superhuman physical and mental attributes. Having hammer space to store nearly unlimited quantities of stuff would be very handy. Healing all injury by just resting overnight would also be nice as would the ability to soak up bullets and shrug off city leveling explosions.

Oh yeah, and being the chosen one wouldn't be such a bad deal either.

I wouldn't mind being surrounded by spiky haired, cute guys. And if I were a guy, the scantily clad damsels wouldn't be too bad, either.

I'd love to be able to carry everything I own around with me. Infinite storage FTW.

Actually, the issue is usually resolved in rpgs as not everyone can fight the monsters. Hell, most of the time, a whole village is beseiged by level one monsters that you find cute a few hours into your journey.

It will be much the same as real life. Those with special qualities will be able to be sucessful from monster hunting, some will try and fail, others will wish they could do what the monster hunters can do.

The one thing I wish for is a clear, defined sense of good and evil. Most of the time, you have the dark evil force threatening the world, and you have the champions of good who have a clear cut process to do what's right. This world is so grey, it's a wonder we're born with the ability to see the color spectrum.

Didn't think of it too much in that regard. I suppose that the lonely shop keeper might have difficulty squaring off against a blue slime. On the other hand how on earth could the regular people afford to pay for those high priced items in the shops near the end of the game?

One other thing that would be cool is if every town had it's own theme music and if it were incredibly easy to skip to each town. That and an overworld theme would be neat, but maybe multiple themes because I can't imagine being out in the world for 5 hours and listening to the same music looping.

not a big mp3 player fan, I see. :)

Maybe a branch dialogue tree would be nice for those people who never know what to say. It least you'll have a one in three, four, or five chance of being correct. Perhaps we'd finally know what the proper answer is whenever starts of saying "Tell me the truth..."

You would be completely correct sir. I don't have an MP3 player (or what ever machine the kids these days use). I don't care much for music.

I like the idea of having a dialogue tree. I have to question wouldn't it possibly contradict your original statement of shades of gray? That might make things even more confusing :p

The Revolution

Oh, no. It helps with shades of gray, eliminating it completely. Didn't you play Kotor? Every statement was either "I'm totally for the Jedis, woo!!" or "I AM THE DARK LORD, REBORN. TREMBLE BEFORE ME!!"

I think the last one is even verbatim.

Not necessarily all cliches, but: I would like very much to be able to wear armor and carry a sword without people thinking I'm weird. Even better if I can stick a magic jewel into one of its slots and suddenly it'll glow red and allow me to light someone on fire. On top of some of the interesting fashion trends I've seen in RPGs, this could be pretty epic. Also, steampunk: all modern amenities but knights on horseback still exist!

I haven't played it since 2003 to be honest. I've played Jade Empire and Mass Effect more recently and they have much more shades of gray to them. There were more options to choose from I suppose. I thought that KOTOR had 3 choices and not just 2.

The Revolution

Actually, if I remember correctly, Kotor had about four to five choices.

But one choice was to press for more information, one was to clear up back story, and two were really light and dark side choices. You could ask the other questions, but they would just give you back ground. The Light and Dark answers were the ones that progressed the plot.

I would like there to be caption bubbles over peoples' heads (or somewhere in the middle at a comfortable reading level) when conversing. There wouldn't be nearly as many misunderstandings, and it would help when you encounter those with pesky foreign accents. :p

Going into strangers' homes and taking their stuff wouldn't be all too bad. They wouldn't even get mad!

Revolution has inspired me. From now on, I'm going to walk around with an mp3 player playing town music (for every different town I'm in). And between towns I'll play overworld music. :)

It'd be pretty cool if sleeping cured all ailments.

Broken leg? No problem, nothing 10 gil and a good night's rest at the inn won't fix.

One cliche that would suck is the one where the bad guys burn down your village and kill all of your friends and family. However, it'd be cool to meet your new "master" and go through the training session that would follow that turns you into a badass.

lol Yeah thats easy to say until your staring down a legion of demons ready to tear you to pieces.

Anyway I always thought it would be awesome if people took turns hitting each other during a fight. I would pay to see that.

Yeah with guns, swords, and other weapons. That would be quite a sight to behold.

One other one that would be neat too could be capturing monsters as pets and raising them. Of course if it were CT the time travel aspect and having your own time machine would be pretty amazing.

I think the Question Mark in this case represents "Find some Japanese, and in failing that, find Quagmire"

I really wish I could hit myself with a rock and become more intelligent, like Live a Live. This is an extreme case, but man, self improvement is trivially easy in RPGs. If you watch enough horror movies and drink enough coffee, you, too, can become a charismatic badass!

Edit: Being able to save and reload so as to choose the right dialog options to make people do what I want would be pretty handy, too.

I would like the Final Fantasy victory fanfare to play at the end of every workday. Completing a day of work is just like winning a random battle. In most cases, you're only doing it for the money...

I was thinking this would be awesome too but change the FF music to your personal favorite song. I was thinking that the Contra music would rock as your "completion" theme. Plus your personal music should be played when ever something positive happens in your life. Perhaps you'd have different music for various "victories" in your life.

That a bunch of goofy looking kids who think beating up animals in the wild will prepare them to stave off any global threat. And be proven right after 20 to 40 hours of this.

The cliche I'd quite enjoy is the obligation of most store owners to pay you something for what you give them, no matter how mundane or worthless. You'd never be without income without someone willing to give you a few dollars for every individual rock, leaf, pencil, or shoe that you find on the street!
