View Full Version : Open Software
Ok I recently learned about OpenOffice.org it is a free open software microsoft word compatable office suite. Now I was wondering if anyone knew of any other open software programs. Other than linux and unix of course(that stuff takes alot to learn). If anyone knows of anything that would be great, or if you know of any bad things that are associated with them.
In other words, if the shit don't work, let me know.

I've used OpenOffice for quite a while now and it more than meets my needs. Some other open source software that I use are Firefox for web browsing, Vuze (Azureus) for torrents, Audacity for very basic audio recording/editing, Miranda for an IM client, and VLC media player.

Yeah, I used to mess around with GIMP as well. I don't anymore just because I really don't do any image editing at this time but it definitely appeared to have a lot of features and options to work with.

Does anyone know if Openoffice can open .wps files? I think the extension is Wordperfect. I used it a long time ago on my old computer, but I transferred some of the files over to my new computer and I want to see what they are.

Despite being very much in favor of the open-source movement, I don't use much OSS. Only ones I really use are Gimp, Inkscape, Notepad++, and Winroll.
The new version of OOo just came out, too. I might have to give it a try. Apparently it's fully compatible with Office 2007 documents, which is nice.

If I didn't have Microsoft Office for free I would definitely use OO. It's almost as good overall, and some of the programs are even better. I like Writer's Microsoft Word 97-00 template better than the current 2007 one, but I use 03 which is my overall favorite.

7zip is awesome. Its totally free and works just as good as winzip or whatever else.
I use AVG and Malwarebytes for virus scans. The free versions dont offer much protection but between the 2 you can remove just about anything you might get.
