I cant believe this thread isnt up already. Is no one playing this!?!?!? I know theres a few haters on here but there was quite a few people around here playing Halo 3.
I picked up the legendary edition at the midnight launch just like I did for H3. It was pretty sweet. They had a tournament with prizes and shit and a few people showed up dressed in homemade spartan suits.
As for the game itself Im loving it so far. The single player is what I expected it to be. I could tell from the trailers that it wasnt going to be anything special. I liked being able to customize the main character and you can even play a chick this time around. Gameplay wise its alright. Space combat was cool but there was only one mission for it. I expected it to be in multiplayer but its not. Maybe in future dlc. The cutscenes could have been better too. Theyre cool and all but they lack dramatic flair. Youll get the "man they could have made that so much cooler" feeling through most of the game. It was good just not great.
The multiplayer on the other hand is perfection. Im amazed at how much better the multiplayer is over H3. Theres just so much there and its fine tuned to perfection. Outside of the new modes they added an xp system where you get credits from matches that you can spend on customizing your spartan. Not a revolutionary idea by any means but it adds a lot to the experience. They even have daily and weekly challenges that net you bonus credits upon completion. I love that because you always have something new to do. Some challenges even involve the campaign, giving you a good reason to want to replay it.
I know Im going to be playing this for years to come and I have no doubt that my game time will far exceed what I invested in H3. H3 had a better campaign but multiplayer doesnt get any better then this.
How are you guys liking it and what do you think the future will bring for the series? Im excited to see it in the hands of a new developer but scared shitless at the same time. I dont want to see one of my favorite series run into the ground.

I have it, though I didn't bother posting a thread about it due to how people feel about Halo here...
I'm enjoying the game for the most part. Still have 4 missions remaining in Legendary mode to finish and let me tell you, it is no cake walk. I had to take a 5 day intermission to cool down before I chose to snap my disc in half haha.
The multiplayer is ok, it doesn't really give me any different feeling than when I played 3, which is both a good and a bad thing. It's still a blast when you have a full party of friends to trash the other team with.

Why is it called Reach?
It stands for Rectal Exam at Cheap Hospital. They took the series in a whole new direction this time.

lol Seriously? Have you not seen one single trailer for the game? On a website or even a commercial? Have you somehow managed to avoid every conversation about it thats taken place on every corner of the internet? Teach me. With skills like that I could have avoided ever learning who Justin Bieber is.
Reach is the planet where the game takes place. Its where all the spartans were created.

I care exactly two shits about Halo, thats how I managed to avoid all that info.
It was an honest question though, I didnt know, sounded like a Bomberman subtitle for the Nintendo DS.

Its good, I just don't have enough time to play it. I like the maps and they seemed to make the weapons alot better especially the Battle Rifle.
I haven't finished the campaign yet tho

I agree about the Battle Rifle. Or DMR as they call it. I dont know why they changed the name its the same damn gun. I still use the assault rifle more in multiplayer but the DMR is great in the campaign. It can one shot everything in the game aside from elites and hunters so its getting me through legendary. I cant imagine playing through that difficulty without it. The pistol is pretty awesome again too. Almost as good as it was the in original. Overall I think its the best selection of the series.
I cant say I miss dual wielding. It was mandatory in H2 but I never bother with it in 3.

The battle rifle used to fire 3 round burst, the DMR doesn't. That's the only real difference.

In the Halo universe, Reach is the main headquarters for the UNSC (the unified human government). In the decades leading up to the beginning of the Halo series, the human race has been fighting a losing battle against an alien armada called the Covenant, with the Covenant destroying the human "outer" colonies one by one on a mission of complete genocide. Reach is one of the "inner" colonies, putting the Covenant only one step outside of Earth. In the context of the story, the aliens finding Reach and destroying it marked mankind's darkest hour, but the story of just what went down was left mostly untold until this game.
Hope that clears it up for you.
It's Halo. And therefore, a Console FPS. And therefore, fail.
Sadly I won't be getting or even playing Reach. It was a hard decision, but I recently gave up video games entirely. I don't even HAVE a 360 anymore. However, this was the game I would have held out for, as I am a huge Halo fan (Actually, Gears of War 3 is up there too, but once I start making exceptions....) Maybe I'll do something really drastic, like read the Halo novels.
Reach is the planet where the game takes place. Its where all the spartans were created.
It's also the main military hub for human civilization, and basically the last bastion of defense before Earth.
EDIT: Or what Zeal said.
And I've heard speculation as to why they took the Battle Rifle out in Reach and replaced it with the DMR. And that's simply that the Battle Rifle is far too powerful. Same reason why they made changes to the sniper rifle. Missed your first shot? No problem, just spam shoot for the head.

The campaign was amazing. It was a little short. Then again i only played it on normal. I started on legendary like 3 weeks ago. Didn't finish it. After that never touched the campaign.

I actually like the new battle rifle (Now called the DMR). I kind of miss the 3 round burst though. The pistol is good like it was in the original. But i guess you can say there is a bad thing that came out of it though. The shotgun is a lot weaker. Oh and there is another change in weapons i didn't really like. The grenade launcher. I HATE how the grenade bounces. It doesn't explode on impact like in Halo 3.
I got it last week and just finished the campaign on Heroic, and it was a bitch. I can't imagine how hard it'd be on Legendary, even without the Flood anywhere to be seen.
Now, I know I'm in the minority, but I liked the Flood from a challenge standpoint, especially the Flood from that infernal mission in Halo 3. Yes it sucked monkey dick, but the feeling of beating that level was amazing. I wanted to fight the Flood in Reach, just as a change of pace. As gay as the fully shielded Brutes with hammers or fuel rod guns at the end were, you could always run away and shoot until they got close again. You couldn't hide from the Flood.
Anyway, I haven't tried multiplayer yet but plan on doing so. My screenname is Gesthar.

I play it a few times each week at a friend's house, because you can finally play online with someone else on your couch with you.
I enjoy it, but need to stop after an hour or two. I get very annoyed with some aspects of the gameplay - some weapons are ridiculously shitty, melee is too effective, shield is too much of a damage sponge.

Well i don't know what you were talking about with more than one person being able to play online when your on the same couch. Because more than one person could play live using the same console on Halo 3... And if you don't want shields on, just play COD. And you can't really talk about the melee being to strong, because in COD you could just run up to someone with commando and stab them...That's a strong melee for you.

CoD being Call of Duty? Yeah, I played that. It's a different game and it plays very, very differently, so I'm not sure why you'd mention it. The shields being too effective is a valid complaint and telling me to play another game is kind of silly. If I get the drop on someone and blast him in the head 3 times with a DMR but he manages to turn and snipe me with a sniper rifle, that shit ain't right.

You could do that way back in Halo 2. Did 3/ODST not have the option? I haven't tried it myself since then.

Oh I guess you could, oops! Rather than take that as an anti-Halo comment, then, I offer it as an anti-gamewithonlineco-opbutnotsplitscreen comment.

The shields are what make Halo what it is. If I had found your post first Id have told you the same thing. If you dont like the shields you might as well play something else because thats what the game is all about. You have to actually work for your kill. But with Reach they now have SWAT so you could get your no shield fix.
Also, the melee in Reach is the weakest its ever been in the series. If they made it any weaker there would be no point at all in using it.

In all fairness, the BR was the most overpowered weapon in Halo 3, so it would make sense that the DMR is drastically de-powered. I was also under the impression that they added serious handicaps to the sniper rifle as well though?

Sniper headshots still kill in one hit, which is good. They don't start with all that much ammo so you have to be pretty good to take advantage.
The shields make the game a bit too forgiving for people who aren't very good, unfortunately. I can move expertly and plan my attack against someone, start shooting them in the spine without them knowing I'm around - but if they're halfway decent they can turn and fire a grenade and a few bullets to take me down with them. Halo games are a crapshoot. I'll go ahead and say I've always been pretty good at Halo, but whether I place first or fifth is totally up to chance a lot of the time.
SWAT's great, but I get tired of it pretty quickly. I'm better with the pistol and run out of ammo pretty early on. That's a good thing though.
I enjoy the gimmick games a lot, though. Juggernaut has a pretty good setup.
I've always preferred MLG. The biggest problem I've had with the Halo games is that the shields regenerate JUST a little bit too quickly.
I don't know if you guys have heard of it and I haven't tried to make it in Reach multiplayer, but we had a setup called Punchout back in Halo 2 multiplayer: no shields, one hit kills, plasma pistols only. You could only kill someone with a melee. It was great fun.
Sadly, it did not work well at all in Halo 3 multiplayer, so here's hoping it does in Reach.
