Retro Replay RPG: April

Well, after a fantastic suggestion from Liz in another thread, here we go with our Retro Replay RPG for April. There were 2 pretty clear cut games to choose from. There will also be a write in vote as well. What ever game wins, shall be our choice for April and the goal is to have as many people as possible play and finish that game. Any suggestions are welcomed. Finally, we should wrap this up by April 1st, so that we have a clear start date. Let's have a blast doing this.

Definitely Xenogears for the same reason as Ges. Also it will give me more reason to play my copy of Xenosaga which I haven't touched, all these years.

FF8, I had even started it but didnt even go to the first training so its perfect.

Xenogears. But I just don't have the time to play the game. It's a long game. I've wanted to replay it for some time.

I'm sorry I'm a little late getting back to this party. I'm guessing that this is the final tally for this thread. I'll keep it open for one more day and see if it changes at all. Then it can begin.

I don't own one of them and I hate the other one... I guess I'll just replay whatever I want to (it'll probably be Final Fantasy IX).

I'll get Xeno in a few days and join you guys. I haven't ever played more than two or three hours of it so it's about time I tackle the game and see what all the hubbub is.

Fine I restart Xenogears just because I restart that game like an 11 year old redneck restarts 2nd grade.

I never got to play Xenogears. Its one of those games that I always wanted to play but it just passed me by. I did play the Saga trilogy which I really liked.

One of the things I remember was how hard Xenogears was the first time I played it and then the second time, which was possibly like 2 years later, I was, not precisely breezing through, but was much easier for me, but I guess that happens all the time with old games. Except Vagrant Story, fuck that game.

I almost wish I had a PSP so I could take the game anywhere. But I do have a PSone/LCD attachment which is the next best thing. There's nothing like taking games to bed with you before falling asleep.

Vagrant Story... I tried that game for the first time about 2 years ago and I got stuck in the first area if I remember correctly. I just didnt understand the game and gave up on it.

Its actually not that hard, you just gotta sort of guess how it works.

First time I got stuck was at the first dragon you fight, my spear was balanced but I was only doing 1hp damage, and even making long attach chains i could never beat it.

So I restarted and did nothing different, i was gonna upgrade it so that I had one weapon strong against dragons but it was making me weak against humans so i stopped. Got to the dragon and said, ok here we go, and I was making 32 damage. A couple chains later Draco was shit.

Chains were fun.

Damn I missed this. I could have helped FF8 lose by a little less.

Oh yeah, so how exactly is this going to go anyway? Is it going to be structured in any way or have you guys already started playing?

I mean we could just have a single thread or we could go as far as making a wiki. Maybe even something incorporated into the main site at some point, you know?

I've started playing, but just barely.

I'd like to look into incorporating it into the site, though. That's a good idea. Let me ruminate on that and I'll get something official pegged down in a few days.

So I have officially restarted playing this, and I'm surprised about a lot of things. One is that the game still looks pretty darn good 12 or so years later. The sprites-in-3D don't look as bad as I thought they might have. I'm also surprised I remember absolutely none of the game so far from about ten years ago when I first played it. All I remembered was that little midget guy (Dan) and how funky he looked. He still looks funky.

Also, the music is seriously awesome. Forgot how good some of the stuff in these older games was.

I guess I'll start playing again too. Or soon, when I finish Portal 2.

And even though I played a good chunk of it twice, I forget quite a bit as well. I'm sure it'll all come back to me though.

Wow does it look absolutely hideous on the big screen. The input lag on my PSP was killing me (I was using the PSX disc + Remote Play) so I just put it in and went all cross-eyed.

But anyway, I had forgotten completely about the anime cutscenes. Which is stupid considering the 3 min intro clip.

I am heading through the woods toward Aveh now.

Side question: is Dan an ugly kid or a midget?

Good question. He is supposed to be an ugly kid because it is said he is Alice's younger brother but at various points in the game it makes you doubt he is treated like an actual kid and he can teleport as well.
