Every year there are a ton of movies that come out with major press. So what is on your list to see over the course of the summer?

I had a chance to see Thor already ( I think it's not out in North America yet) and it was much better then you'd expect. It's one of those films that easily could have fallen on it's face but it didn't. The acting is well done (maybe better then any previous Marvel film) and the characters are interesting. There aren't too many hints at other Marvel characters (there is one notable one) or Marvel items (again there are a few but nothing too major). A great movie as a whole. The Destroyer could have been a little better though.

I know that I want to see the Captain America movie as well. I'm a little nervous for that one too because the trailer is good, which often leads to a weak movie. Hope I'm wrong though.

I'm a little foggy at what else will be released, but maybe this thread can be a pool for ideas.

EDIT: Oops I forgot about Green Lantern as well. Looks pretty good.

Harry Potter comes to mind first, because I was super happy to see that it comes out in July. That means I can see it when it comes out. Had it debuted during the school year, I'd almost definitely have to wait.

It's also a family thing, so I can see it with them, because I'm a gigantic ******.

The above mentioned superhero films of course. I am a sucker for spectacle. Ditto Harry Potter. I watch everything Pixar produces, so the new Cars flick is a given. And I'll probably catch Kung Fu Panda 2. I might be suckered into seeing Cowboys & Aliens if just for the inherent silliness. Plus, Conan the Barbarian is one I'll see no matter how dubious it looks. It's Conan after all.

Pretty much, the only movie I'd be happy to go see alone (which is how I go to the movie most of the time that I go) is Harry Potter. I'd go see some of the other ones if other people wanted me to go with them, Thor, Capitan America, Green Lantern, and Hangover 2 come to mind.

Harry Potter is the only one I care about. The others? I'll see most of them eventually, most likely, but HP is the only one on my immediate Radar.

I am gonna watch Thor tonight and I cant wait for the Hangover.

I of course am interested in Ryan Reynolds in Green Spandex and Captain America as well.

I am not sure about Xmen First Class because the fist class does not have the actual lineup right and apparently has Havok in there which completely goes against good judgement, making Havok and xman that is. But two things I like is Tony Stonem as Hank McCoy even though he is supposed to be chunky and the scene where Magneto is pulling the sub from the sea is really just awesome.

Phak- just don't get arrested for indecent exposure, because we all know you're going to be whipping it out and jerking it through Green Lantern.

Well to bump this up a little bit, the Summer Movies have seemingly been kicked off now. I'm heavily considering seeing X-men: First Class. I'm not usually concerned with reviews but they seem to be positive enough to push me to go. I was on the fence for the film after enjoying the original trailer, but then reading some story thread ideas that I didn't care for. Thinking of catching it on Thursday.

Green Lantern is a go for me as well as Cap. I'm also heavily considering Cowboys and Aliens. It looks like it could be a great mash up movie. I can't remember a summer where there were this many movies I actually wanted to see (Yes, 3-4 is a lot for me but maybe not for others).

Thor was tits man. I am definetely gonna watch Xmen Frist Class this weekend, I spent last sunday looking at the characters trailers and they look awesome, even though Banshee is not irish which I think it stupid.

The buzz on the net is thsat Green Lantern and Cap may be big duds but after watching Thor i am confident they are gonna pull something good.

Just thought I could give a few points on the new X-men: First class movie. It was much much better then I could have anticipated. There was so much to like and enjoy.

Good:
Xavier and Magneto dynamic. Both actors have great screen presence in the film. They feel as though they have just met and are trying to understand each other, but at the same time it's easy to feel their bond. It's probably the best, and most important aspect of the entire movie.

Kevin Bacon was a great choice as Sebastian Shaw. He is clean and believable. He actually almost feels like the character Magneto from the comics in a lot of ways. A great performance that doesn't feel forced on the audience.

Setting and Atmosphere played a much larger role then in any other X film. This movie almost has a James Bond type approach to it. There are a number of languages used and countries visited. It was a great idea to make it a period film and they were money on the clothes and style and the characters looked great. I really loved this part of the film and gave a much broader appeal to the characters and made it seem like the world was involved in it and not just the US.

Bad aspects included the fact that most of the characters seem to just exist. No characters really stand up and take stage (of course this movie isn't really about them I suppose). They are all just in the background for the most part. If this series does happen to expand, then it should be expected that these characters get more to do in the future. It also felt like some of the actors weren't totally into the roles that they were playing.

One great bonus happens during the film. I won't say what it is but it make me laugh and was a great inclusion.

Lot of money in that.

Anyway, I think Evil_Angel and I are going to see it this weekend. Or maybe Hangover 2, but I hear that's kind of bleh.

Yes I think we will be seeing X-men first class sometime this weekend. I would like to see Hangover 2 at some point also. :)

My brother and friend said the exact same thing. If you're looking for a comedy, see Bridesmaids over the Hangover 2, hands down.

Dude, go watch Xmen First Class, it makes the bitter aftertaste the Last Stand left go away. Even though I still have issues with only having Beast from the actual First Class, Vaughn did well, I liked it even more than the first xmen film, and to be honest I am certainly glad to have an xmen movie without Jean Grey and Cyclops although having James Marsden play Summers made it bearable. Fuck Jean Grey.

I digress, its a good film, as close as the main source as it can be, or maybe Hollywood just makes us settle for what little we can get. Fassbender and Wesley Gibson did well on their parts, particularly Fassbender who seems to be on the verge of just killing everybody on screen but I felt he should have been more cruel as a nazi hunter. Tony Stonem is ok as Henry McCoy and I could stomach Banshee not being irish becuase the kid playing him is certainly charismatic, Havok is cool, Angel Salvadore and Darwin should not have been in the movie, casting an Australian to play Scottish Moira McTaggert as an american is just retarded and January Jones has the flattest ass I have ever seen on screen,

Speaking of ass, i want whoever it is that plays Mystique to sit on my face for an hour.

My brother and friend said the exact same thing. If you're looking for a comedy, see Bridesmaids over the Hangover 2, hands down.

I dont see it opening here but I actually want to watch it because Rose Byrne can get hilarious so effortless, Ellie Kemper is so adorably funny and I just adore Melissa McCarthy. Wiig is ok I guess, I feel she is overrated. I forgot who else is in the cast.

Well I guess I can be the bearer of bad news on the Green Lantern front. I was extremely disappointed with the movie. It feels broken all the way through.

I'm not really up to snuff on the GL universe but I understand enough of the back story. I think the villans were handled particularly poorly and they don't seem to make any sense or follow any sort of reason to do what they are doing in the film. The romantic subplot is strained and unbelievable. The effects are great at times and terrible at others. There are more human characters in the film that resembled what the Guardians looked like in the comics then the CG ones they used here.

*Spoilers*

Oa is pretty much non existent in the film. The marketing seemed to push that GL was going to focus a lot of time in the cosmos and we never really see anything. It's disappointing that other Lanterns seem so helpless and just fodder in the movie. Especially Sinestro, who is played well by Mark Strong, but never seems important enough in the movie. The Oa sequence starts out strong but just falls apart.

*End Spoiler*

It's obvious that they wanted to make a series out of this, if you bother to go to the movie you should stay just after the short part of the credits to see a teaser. I just don't see it happening. It feels like DC wants this to usher in all of their other heroes, but as a whole I've never felt a connection to their universe. It's much more difficult to bring most of the DC characters to film as compared to the Marvel universe.

I might be a little late in saying this, but X-Men First Class is stupendous. Best movie so far this year for me.

I agree, X-Men First class was a good movie. Its not true to the comics, but neither have any of the other x-men flicks. It had a good plot and was very entertaining. The only negative, I think they did drag it on a little longer then they should have, they could have wrapped it up a lot quicker, felt like they were milking it.

Hangover 2: its what you expect, its also what the critics said. The same movie, the same jokes, the same plot, different location and different plot devices. Was it horrible? nah. If you've never seen Hangover, then Hangover 2 is probably a good movie to see.

Thor: It was good, but at times I felt like they were trying too hard. I enjoyed the scenes when they were in Asgard, Earth...... no so much.

Green Lantern: I've always been a huge DC fan, pretty much everyone in the 1990-2000 JLA. I've been a big GL fan for a long time, but I really didn't get into the series until Kyle Rayner took over. I almost wish Hal Jordan stayed dead in the comics. I can't wait to see it.

All of you guys should go see Bridesmaids immediately. Way better than either Hangover, though I'm not entirely sure why they're compared.

Just saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It was decent. Better than the most recent Apes movies for sure, and better than I was expecting as a whole.

The acting was kinda blah, though. The CG apes were fantastic.

I am dying to see that movie. People just dont understand how much fascination I find in the posibility of another animal gaining the necessary intelligence to dethrone humans as the dominant species.

They go like "Eh, I guess it looks cool. OMG James Franco!". Ugh. I literally couldnt keep myself from smiling the entire trailer the first time I saw it. I had such a shit eating grin it embarrassed me.

I've had trouble finding James Franco even the slightest bit attractive since I realized one of our former residents at work looks a lot like him.
Anyhow, when I saw the preview, I thought it looked very interesting, but I'm extremely picky with what I'll spend a lot of money on going to the movies.

James Franco is awesome, I am not sure how attractive he is, but I find him to have a really cool personality, its like he doesnt give a fuck.

Also, I am quite grateful no one has even mentioned the Smurfs movie. I had dinner with a friend las friday and at the restaurant she was like "Oh, wanna go see the Smurfs". I swear to god I had to refrain myself to not slap the living shit out of her.
