View Full Version : Calling all grannies!!
Its interesting to me that names go in and out of fashion. Think about your grandmothers' names. Mine were named Mildred and Bilimac (I have no idea).
It seems most common with female names. You don't see many new parents naming their little girls Blanche, Ethel, or Betsy anymore.
I suppose there are some old timey men's names, too. I have uncles named Leonard, Lester, and Glenn.
What about you guys? What are some outdated names your relatives have?
This is creepy! I know someone who had a little girl recently and named her Blanche.
My grandmothers had normal names! The one who's still around is Christine.
My name sucks but that site is very interesting

Here we still get some of the common names I have grown up with. I think now its more important how you combine the first and middle names of the kids as there are just a bunch of Carlos and Robertos. Oddly I havent found my name being used a lot, and outside of my family where the basic name convention is to have males named Ramon with a middle name starting with an A, I dont know any other Ramons.
Now to my chart, this is what Ramon came up with

And I also anglicized it to Raymond and the results are interesting. Apparently the spanish name is much more popular now than the english name.

My grandmother's names are Elaine and Evelyn and my step grandmother's name was Thalia. My middle name is Esther after both of my great grandmothers and I'll probably give Esther or "Tess" as a middle name to one of my daughters as well.

I forgot to input my grandmother's name. My maternal grandmother is named Margarita and although I havent seen it that much, my 4 year old cousin was also named Margarita as was her mother my aunt. I dont think its that outdated.
Mother, my sister and my niece also share names, Flavia. A friend of mine said it was a weird name since it sounded like from the 1900s and its kinda rare these days but I have always liked it.
As for my paternal grandmother, her name is Miriam and that does rings old lady to me. Funny thing, while doing some work for a client at a bank, the bank executive in charge of the credit was named Miriam and she was this really attractive lady, probably either late 20s or early 30s. It was odd that her name rang grandmother to me since she looked so fine and young.
As for my demon seeds, i want to name a son of mine Ramon Augusto or Ramon Antonio and a daughter would probably be named Flavia.

My name (Dana) was only popular in the 60s. I'm not that old, but that's what it said.
Dunno how to make the fancy graph show up here, lol.
My grandmothers were Pearl and Margaret. Are dangit, both still alive. My grandfathers were Butler and Robert. Never seen another Butler in my life, but Robert is still pretty common.
My kid's names have all become popular, but I didn't realize how popular when I chose them. Drake, Skye, and Alissa. Actually, all those are middle names, but that's what they ended up going with.

Florence is my Portuguese grandmother, and Lydia was my Italian grandmother. Actually, my great grandmother messed up and spelled my Italian grandmother's name "Lidia," so I always felt a super strong bond with my grandma because my name was spelled wrong (Milissa instead of Melissa).
I have...: Aunt Rosemary, Aunt Katherine Agnes (Agnes is OLD), Aunt Virginia,... Male names in my family aren't usually "old." Portuguese side of the family, everyone's named Frank, John, or Louis. ...seriously. It gets old. You go to a Portuguese celebration (Festia) and say "Hey Frank!" 50 guys turn around. On the Italian side, Romolo, Angelo, Leo, and Olympio... Yeah, those were my grandma's brothers... Can't get any more Italian than that. Lastly, my Dad's father's side, were all George's, Raymond's, Charles', and so on...
Oh, did I forget to mention, my Mom is Geraldine? lol That's old!

My mom is Sandra. I have in my family a Hazel, Betty, Ruth, Ruby, Pearl, Wade, Sharon, Mitch (and I married a Mitchell, lol) , Guy, Claude, Roy, Clovie. My great grandmother was named Carrie, but it was pronounced Car(as in the automobile)-ree, which I always liked. Some weirder names were Lavonia and Bodah (we called her Bodie), don't know who came up with those.
The only ones I never understood was my dad and uncle. Dad's name is Albert, but they call him Pete, and my uncle is named John, but they call him Pedro. I don't get why at all.

It would probably depend on country and stuff. Aparently "Eduardo" has had a meteoric rise in recent years while "Edward" has had a meteoric drop. I guess Edward is kind of a dorky name, but Eduardo... now that's sexy. OASIDHPASodAIDSHPODSihaSPdoISDhPOASdihASPdiHAdspoi AHdsaPOIDS. One of my grandmothers was named Victoria, which isn't that uncommon. The other one is Maria Helena, but that really wouldn't work in English. I guess it'd just be Marie. Now Grandpa's name... his name is Eladio, which I doubt was ever popular anywhere, but it exudes ancient. His middle name is "Dionisio" (Dyonesius?), to give you a clue. The other one was named Edward. I don't really have a lot of weird names outside of that. Gabriela, Juan Carlos, Alberto, Sebastian, Carla... They're all pretty common here.

AHAHAHAHA Powerslave, my father's third name was Dionisio.
Oh yeah, apparently it was a big thing for people to have three names back in the day too. Mother has three names too.

Sorry to hear that, but I believe the thread is about the outdated names of your older living or deceased ancestors. Have any good ones?

My grandmothers' names are Fran and Nancy, and my grandfathers' names were Fred and Ray.
The rest of my family is pretty solid as far as I'm concerned. Dad and Mom are Thomas and Barbara, respectively; I'm Elizabeth, my sister is Brittany, and my brother is Geoffrey (this is the proper way to spell it, peasants); aunts, uncles and cousins are Ann, Mary Ellen, Michelle, Bob, John, Doug, Stephanie, Michael, Robert, Christopher, and Susan.
I guess I didn't need to go into that much detail about names but I am pretty bored right now.
