President of SCEE David Reeves says platform holder is set to unveil new clampdown.

President of SCEE David Reeves has admitted to MCV that there is a global piracy issue on PSP ? and said that Sony is set to unveil a new clampdown on those responsible.

However, speaking at the firm?s developer DevStation conference in London last week, Reeves said that the trend was actually helping drive sales of PSP hardware.

?There is a piracy problem on PSP. We know about it, we know how it?s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it,? said Reeves, telling attendant developers that Sony will unveil new ways to combat piracy soon.

Pretty obvious, this whole episode is unevitable rite? Whatever created can be hack in the first place, so why bother now but not before.

Anyway, what do you think of the clampdown plans of SCEE? What/ how will they do it? Can they do it? Should they do it? Your opinions/ feedback goes here in this thread.

The majority of piracy d/l's is usually on torrents. Even if they did do something, there are other alternatives to upload psp isos all over the net. Sony should still be happy they're hardware sales are up. They're just mad cause of homebrew emulation. No matter where this is going, piracy will always exist.

They'll start pinning down a few people through their broadband connection. It has been done before.

Pirating DS game is a rarity over here in Malaysia. For some odd reason, PSP piracy is more rampant.

On the other boards I frequent, I hardly ever see anyone talking about pirating PSP games, it's usually DS games and in large numbers.
I'll have to agree in general. The DS only came out in South Korea sometime last year and it's already full of blackmarket games. I can't stand when my kids come to class and are bragging about the games they have on their mini chips. It really upsets me that they think it's okay to steal games and not pay for them. I don't think I've seen really anyone here who is actually using the real deal. They all get the mini chips.

I'm sure Nintendo cares very less about the piracy since the NDS still sells out rapidly in every store.

This whole piracy thingy is now extended to PS3 as well. I've seen a game vendor demonstrated how a PS3 able to play just the way you play PSP game. The salesperson put in an original blue-ray PS3 game, loads the logo, take out the blue-ray PS3 game, next plug in memory stick loaded with the 'games', voila! Choose which game you want to play from the list.

Sony has the ps3 on check for the next few months. Everytime these hackers make some kind of possiblity, sony strikes back with more frustrating patches. It takes a huge **** up FW update to make it happen. But yeah. we wont see anything til later. Seriously, we need some homebrew already. The wii has it now >.<.

Nintendo cares very much about piracy and is still trying it's best to keep a stranglehold on even it's old games from the 80s. It's stupid for any hardware company not to care about piracy, as developers are going to shy away from a console/handheld that is easy to steal games on. Do you really want to spend millions of dollars making a game that can be stolen for free?

Not to sound harsh or vindictive, but there is not only a PSP piracy problem, but mainly just a piracy problem in general. Unfortunately, I don't see anything in the near future that would stop anybody from doing it, either. Maybe some government spy bot or something that catches people on a whim someday, but it just seems unending. Sucks that the PSP has been getting hit like it has, though.

so you assume they aren't just playing things that won't get released stateside / until it gets released stateside

I don't see a problem with it with hideously rare games, games that will never even hit our shores and others of the like

Very true... But the games still sell great even with piracy lurking around the net. Piracy is only a minor problem to the DS (at least that's how I see it). Seeing that Sony's taking this to a whole new level shows that the psp isn't doing great either due to each FW update getting decrypted the next day.

If nintendo continues to act greedy with their garbage VC games , homebrew will always exist. NDS has been screwed for a while now but even their recent games haven't been all that either. I will admit one thing though. I'll only buy games that deserve to be purchased like the Castlevania DS series,Phoenix Wright, etc. Those kinds of games are worth having in your library.

No, they are playing New Super Mario Brothers and a large variety of games that have been released a long time ago in North America/Japan. They weren't translated to Korean and sold here until last year. I have no idea why the DS wasn't sold here earlier. Only thing I can think of is either Samsung or LG has a lock on portable devices and the DS doesn't have some sort of chip they have in it. Not totally sure. That or the hate for Japan here as well could be a factor.

I don't know how little a problem it is in other countries, but it's a problem here for sure. Perhaps in other parts of Asia as well, which has always been a hot bed for pirated movies/games. Hong Kong is a big one.

I guess the point is, if it looks crappy. Don't buy it. Leave it at that.

Wherever there is homebrew, there will be piracy. It's actually kind of odd... the game companies try as hard as possible to prevent homebrew on their consoles, while at the same time try to become more like a desktop computer environment. You can't really have both.

PSP piracy is probably not quite as widely talked about now because it's apparently harder to accomplish now than it is on the DS. Back in the day, though, installing homebrew could be accomplished in a good few minutes and could be done with what the PSP came with. And it's still possible, I believe you just need some extra stuff to get it done with the current firmware.
