Just wondering what sorts of activities away from the computer everyone else does. I'm sure that everyone had some sort of physical activity that they enjoy doing. Be it, playing a sport, Martial Arts, Running, Gym training and so on.

I know for myself, I use to be in Martial Arts, but sort of fell out of it a long time ago. Now I'm big on going to the gym for training. I go 6-7 times a week and rarely miss a day of training. I do some times do a shorter work out to just rest my body and such but I still like to be at the gym doing something rather then nothing.

Anyone else doing some training of sorts? If so, what?

Weight training. I do it sporadically. I've been lazy lately, though, ever since my job changed location. The gym is rather inconvenient for me now.

Well, right now I'm in Iceland so I've been hiking like mad. The first few days, we were in the middle of the countryside with mountains and hills all around us. People have no concept of private property here so it's ok to just start walking. Since there's 24 hours of sunlight and no trees, it's also very easy to lose track of time and misjudge distance. :P

The first day, I sprained my ankle and so I haven't been on any epic hikes since, but I do walk quite a bit... which means that my ankle is still hurting like hell. :P It's about a mile and a half each way to school up a huge hill and I walk around quite a bit more just to see town.

Since my ankle is pretty much at chronic sprain point, I can't run or do many sports. Even ellipticals tend to hurt horrifically. I walk slowly so as not to hurt my ankle again or further, but I walk a LOT. Plus, it's gorgeous scenery around here so once it stops raining, I'll definitely be taking more photographs and doing walking photo tours out into the countryside.

I do have an exercise plan for these summer holidays though.

No, i am kinda lazy.

I am currently trying to not have dinner every night and just drink stuff. Once I get to a decent weight I may get into weight lifting. I have been flabby for far too long I say.

I started swimming again, about 2 hours a day during the week. It's incredibly exhausting, but the results are great so far.

During the fall semester I'll rejoin the gym.

I've been trying to get back into a routine for a month or two now. My job is fairly physically demanding, so that good and bad. It's good because it keeps me in decent shape, but at the same time I'm almost too tired to do anything after work.

I'm going to start weight training and cardio this week and hopefully stick with it.

I've been at the gym 5-6 days a week since I was in junior high (on top of conditioning for the sports I played.) My workouts usually range 1.5-2 hours, with cardio (usually running) taking up the bulk of it (min. 1 hour) and some light lifting, crunches, and stretching towards the end.

Well, I used to be a lot better about it back before my Mom was diagnosed with cancer, because I sort of stopped caring as much... I packed on a bit of weight...but back before she was diagnosed I'd just gotten back into tap dancing, and I want to get back into it again if time/money permits... I also want to get back into softball so bad (I was in a class at CSU-Fresno and then I got mono, doctor advised I drop it and my strength training class for the risk of possibly rupturing my spleen)... As of right now I've been being a little bit lazy, only because outside during the day it's too hot here already to do anything... I'm thinking I might start doing my midnight strolls again (more like a 30-45 minute walk at about 10 PM). My "strolls" are more like I walk laps around my house the whole time... walking too far away from my house, in the country, at night = bad news (considering this is the local "dumping ground" for corpses).

However--- now I'm going to be enrolling back at my community college to take two classes that are prerequisites for the credential program at my university, so this will allow me to enroll in a PE class or two. I'm excited! Community college had better PE classes offered anyway! :D

I am not doing anything right now, which is really killing me. I need to get back into the gym and start working out to strengthen my back and groin muscles. I wake up everyday with them hurting, and I know it is because they are stiff and have not been stretched or worked on at all. Once I strengthen those up, I did think about about joining a martial arts gym in town, but my job right now really takes up a lot of my time, so I would only be able to have a class on Sunday and Monday, so I really do not see that happening.

I'm fairly lazy on the exercise front, but I figure I get enough running around in my day to day life.

I am working on getting my treadmill back from a friend though. I sold it a while back because I didn't have room for it, now I do. It's paid for, I just can't get my husband to go get it for me.

Sushi, you sound fit! I've yet to see a picture of you now that I think about it. Show us those guns!

I use to workout until I hurt my rotator cuff and my a/c shoulder joint. Might be a while before I can start again. I was heavy into martial arts(Judo, Kung-Fu, Jujitsu, Ninjitsu, Karate, Kickboxing, and Tae-Kwon-Do). I did a lot of BMXing, skateboarding, and even roller blading back in the day.

For all you fitness buffs out there, what's something good to keep my energy up, keep me filling full, that won't put so much on my ass? Since I cut out soda, I've lost that caffeine boost, and drinking too many energy drinks kinda defeats the purpose of cutting sodas, since they have just as many calories and sugars, if not more.

DrunkSwashbuckler

Eat a big breakfast. A lack of energy can almost always be equated to not having enough "fuel" to keep you going, and not having something substantial in the morning leaves you playing catch-up for the rest of the day.

Not only is there an energy boost, but you also don't overeat later in the day because you're sooo hungry. I've always heard that oatmeal is a great breakfast starter. It's simple but has the a good amount of cals to get your day going. That with some fruit and you should be good to go. Breakfast really is important, and unfortunately a lot of people just skip it because of oversleeping or what not.

I do have machines but they are all cardio exercise machines. So all I basically do is 20 push ups a day, I do about 70-80 sit ups and I lift 5s until the timer goes.

Sounds like you're doing okay, but if you want a build you'll have to lift weights. If you just want to be toned, it sounds like you're doing alright to me. I would suggest 5s are too light, but whatever :p And you should step up your routine after a while, more pushups and situps and some good cardio. Woo.

I'm under the impression that you're using those cardio machines, though. You are, right?

DrunkSwashbuckler

FE: You'll want to lift more than 5 pound weights and you shouldn't simply lift until a time-limit is hit, you should lift until you physically can't lift anymore. Same with push-ups: if you want to build up some tone, do 3 sets of max-rep push-ups.

Edit: By "lift" you mean bicep curls, right?

Depends on what target muscles you are working on. If you are trying to get an overall build, you'll probably have to spend 1 hour a day or so doing different parts of your body each day. You can rotate everything in succession. Something like,

Day 1) Chest and Biceps
Day 2) Back and Shoulders
Day 3) Triceps and Forearms
Day 4) Legs and Calves
Day 5) Cardio or a mix of each exercise
Day 6) Pick a particular target group from days 1-4.
Day 7) rest or do a quick mix of everything

I typically go to the gym every day and rotate like this. If I'm in a hurry I go through a quick mix of exercises to warm up all my muscles with at least one set of 3 with 10 or more reps. I also do Abs every day (roughly 1000 or so).

yeah working out always makes me feel better. but about the whole eating thing the way I was taught was you are not supposed to eat 30 mins to an hour before and after the workout. what happens is everything you burn off will be what you just ate and not what is currently stored in your body. also drink plenty of water before after and during workouts. gatorade works ok too but water is the better of the choice, even though gatoraid has more additives in it.

It has lots of hills, which are killer tough during the day when it's 90+ degrees, but I'm doing it at least twice every day, once at noon, once at around midnight. Well, It's not too bad. If you are really interested, I can probably help you put a work out together and you can look online to see the particular exercises. It's usually much better to focus on free weights anyways because they require more body resistance, rather than machine resistance. Just give me an idea of what areas in particular you would like to focus on. If it's everything we can put together a full schedule.

Gaining weight has been a probably for me for years. One of the things that can really help out is to take a type of protein weight gainer. They usually consist of around 1000 calories per drink and can also give you more mass in general. Another option is to eat a lot of grains. Bread, cereal, oatmeal and such.

Yeah, you have to actually damage your muscles that way they can rebuild themselves and when they do they build more as you're telling the body that you require more for what you're doing. Also, you have to progressively climb in how much weight you're lifting. If you don't you will hit a ceiling and you won't progress. So, you need to keep increasing the weight until you get to where you want.

Alright, so focus particularly on the chest and legs. I'll put something together for you. You'll have to adjust your weights to what ever is comfortable for your lifting strength. I'm not really sure where you are at and it's really up to you anyways. I'll PM you in a few days at the latest of what you can do for those targets. As for everything else I'll help you out anyway I can if you want it.

Yeah, they can be really helpful for gaining weight. Another thing would be to just snack all the time. Any time you can eat something you should. Fruits are good. I've read that berries in particular are great at helping build muscles quickly, such as strawberries and raspberries. Perhaps that could be another area to start with. Not sure what kind of price you are going to pay for a weight gainer in the UK, but be sure to get at least a 5 KG bag. You need to start with enough to get you body accustomed to using it.

DrunkSwashbuckler

Remember, you want to overwork your muscles, not over-strain. Over-straining them is benching 50 pounds 50 times for 4 sets; over-working is benching 150 pounds 6 times, for 4 sets.

If you really want to put on weight, do the 5x5 workout: find the maximum amount that you can lift 5 times in a row, and do that for five sets; you shouldn't be able to finish it. Once you're able to complete that weight for 5 sets of 5 reps each, increase the weight by about 15 pounds. During this time, do absolutely ZERO CARDIO! You will gain muscle mass like crazy, though it's hard to describe the physical exhaustion you'll feel.

DrunkSwashbuckler

Good rule of thumb: High rep, low weight, low set = fat burner; low rep, high weight, high set = mass builder.

Lifting weights burns fat like crazy if you do it right, especially if followed up by a good cardio workout. So instead of lifting 5 reps for 5 sets, do 15 reps for 2 sets (max possible lifts, of course).

Lift less more times.

Yup. Exactly that. If you are trying to get defintion and tone in your muscles the best way is to continually do a strenuous task. Doing less weight but more times will result in your arm continuing to build resistance to what it's doing. It's basically building muscle at a slower rate.

Phakiel, for your case, the best thing would be to follow that line of doing more of everything but at less weight. If it seems really easy to do 10 reps of something, then do it for 20-30. Doing 3 sets of 20-30 (will be between 60-90 of that particular exercise) will greatly improve the resistance that your muscles can take.

Get on the band wagon Cyrus. Move those muscles!

Actually, I was going to ask you for an ab workout. When I worked out I did as many situps as I possibly could before I collapsed (or an upside-down bicycle type exercise. I have no idea what to call it). I am hoping to god there is another way :( But I know there isn't. I'm just... hoping you have some miracle workout.

Well, there are a ton of things that you can do Cyrus. Unfortunately they all require a lot of determination and hard work. I don't know of any other way of doing it. Regardless here are some of the different things that you can do.

Ab Slide - you know that little wheel with the two handles you might have seen at the gym? This thing will work your abs like crazy after about 20-40 reps. It's great for the whole stomach area. Make sure you body is doing the work versus your arms. In other words make your body push and pull your self from your core. You can also do it with a long bar with 2 weights on the end if you don't have the actual roller.

Jack Knife - Fantastic for the lower abs and every part in general. I prefer to do them on a bench of some kind so that you can decline or incline your back in any position that you want. Declining your shoulders will really help (at least I find). It's probably my favorite exercise for abs, but it takes a lot of them before you can notice any difference. I usually do about 600 a day at the gym, not including other ab exercises.

Hanging leg Lift - This one is a killer. It's really tough to gun off a large number of these but they work well. It's just basically hanging off a bar and pulling your legs into your chest as many times as you can. I like doing them but the biggest problem is that your arms get tired. If you already did any kind of arm workout, this exercise would not be suggested by me.

Crunches - Pretty standard stuff. Don't think I need to explain them. If you want more results though, higher number at faster pace works well. But don't discredit doing a much smaller number at a very slow rate. Doing 20 of them really slow and tightening your muscles at the height of the crunch for 10-15 seconds is incredibly tiring. Try that out if you don't want to do so many. It works for push-ups as well. If you want more challenge there is always declined sit ups.

Bicycle is a classic one that works really well. I've found that if you do this as the last part of an ab work out, that's when it's the most effective. Be sure you really twist from side to side. Really good for the sides of your body.

Yeah, that bicycle thing. Ugh.

Anyway, I'm not afraid of hard work. I just hate doing that exercise until I collapse. I should invest in a proper bench so it's a bit easier, maybe.

Don't kill yourself like that. The best thing to do is to do a set of a certain number, then change the exercise to give one part of your abs a rest while you work on the other part. You can do a lot of them Cyrus, but pace it so that you don't feel like dying after.

This fucking prick something8something posted a naked chick. I dont know how naked she was or if it was only one picture. I got to her boobs, freaked the fuck out and quickly closed the window as I was at work. I deleted my temp files and history although that wont change a damn thing if the IT people get picky and report it to my bosses.

Jerkoff. On the positive side, for what I could see, she had nice tits.

I used to work out a lot, but unfortunately I haven't had the drive to do it in awhile. I'm trying to convince myself to wade the block and a half through a snow covered field, where on the other side is the community gym. If I don't tough it out, then I'll essentialy have to walk around the field, which is much longer, and I don't want to do that. :(
