I just found this song a few days ago. With no disrespect to this guy, but wow this is not sampling it's a completely stolen song. Makes me pretty sad that he decided to be "gangsta" with this particular song. :(

I don't really see how it's a big deal or how it's at all a "stolen" song. Sampling music/effects from video games is pretty commonplace these days.

That said, while I do like some hip-hop, this isn't my thing at all. And the video makes it laughably worse.

I don't mind the song, but the video is fucking stupid.

Perhaps someone can educate me more but I thought sampling was using a small part of a song, around 30 seconds, but this is the entire song being used and only slightly changed.

I didn't listen really to the lyrics to be honest, but the video doesn't fit the melody to me.

Isn't it just a few-seconds-long sample looped for the entire song? It's no worse than say, Kanye West using Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger in his song, in my opinion. Which is to say, it's annoying, but there's nothing really wrong with it in principle. Again, in my opinion.

As far as I can tell that is the entire song being used. I suppose it could be argued that the original song is sort of looped in itself.

I'm not opposed to sampling because some songs do a great job of it. Wondering more so if this rapper knows where the music is actually from and if he did in fact basically cut and paste the song to be his own.

Basically this is a song written by a Japanese composer for an emotional scene in a video game that has been turned into a Gangsta rap composition about, as far as I can tell, ho's and money.

I guess it just doesn't bother me like it may have in the past. With music today, seems like everything is a copy of a copy of a remix of a copy. For better or for worse.

I don't even care about the sampling because that's what rap, hip hop, and various other kinds of music is based on...

But I laughed at the number of ass and cash shots there were in the video. I just kept saying to my boyfriend "Ass," or "Cash," every time one was on the screen. It's loltacular that way.

This is a sample, and Vanilla Ice did not rip off Queen and David Bowie.

That is to say, sounds like the whole song to me, but it really is par for the course in rap music.

That's a pretty uninformed statement.

Normally you'd have to clear samples like this before releasing it in today's industry, but this song is from a free mixtape which means you can do whatever you want. Just look at albums like Mega Ran (Which certainly does more with the idea than this song). I'm certainly not defending Wiz Khalifa or this song, but it's not even close to the first time someone threw a half hearted beat that was little more than a drum loop over an existing song onto a mixtape. At least he's not selling it.

Since it's kinda relevant, here's a better attempt at this idea!

It's just a mash up and they don't chop the original song up much, but as far as low-effort video game music sampling goes I'd have to say this wins. Helps that it has way better rappers in it.

And here's Mega Ran:

I think Capcom USA's PR people actually like Mega Ran, though.

I presume that the comment is directed to me, so yet I was uninformed on the origin of the song. I don't know anything about a Chrono Trigger mixtape and that it's been used by rap stars. Who made this mixtape, fans of the game?

Ultimately, this rapper and others have their prerogative to sample for any and everything. I don't follow music from North America at all so I'm certainly out of the loop (not that I mind at all). Perhaps my personal feelings and memories of playing CT blind my opinion more to dislike hearing a song such as this because I am fond of the original.

I kinda like it to be honest. The song, not the video.

Also another Mega Ran favorite of mine:

I have the whole album on my ipod, hah.

Short and mild observation about Wiz - he falls into the growing "weed" rap category, as opposed to the "Gangsta rap." The former is extremely popular cross-culturally, though a majority of the concerts where visitors actually purchase tickets, are indeed white. I'm not particularly keen on what influenced the usage (maybe he played CT, maybe someone caught wind of it, etc.), but American music is full of quotation and recycling - it's just the age. I like the song in any case.

Perhaps you're upset that people will not recognize it as a CT masterpiece. That's totally understandable. It's the responsive-niche privileged knowledge. If not, to each their own. In all fairness, pre-FFVIII tracks are typically short. Even one of my favorites (Fierce Battle, FFIII/VI) is around a minute long. With chillwave (love it) and other ridiculously titled subgenres in music today, and the prevalence of MIDI-styled/electro (let's not include British Trance, we'll save Lady Gaga's brandished and ersatz ingenuity for later), this is to be expected. Also. If you like to shake your ass (which you should), there's no way you shouldn't feel inclined to drop it like it's hot.

Oh no, it was just a response to Liz basically saying that lazy sampling is par for the course for rap music. I just don't think that's a fair thing to say.

And of course you're more likely to dislike this song. It's a few boring verses thrown on top of a sample of a piece of music you have an emotional connection to. I love hip hop and it kind of annoyed me, too. Not to the point where I think he's shitting on my childhood or something, of course. And hell the link I posted was pretty low-effort, too: a sped up version of Get 'Em High over a sped up version of Marle's theme with a drum loop. The difference was that I liked the lyrics on that one and thought the beat sounded better.

If anything I think it's probably whoever produced the song that either played Chrono Trigger or heard the song somewhere, and let Wiz listen to it (I don't know if Khalifa makes his own beats, to be honest I'm pretty out of the loop with the growing weed rap category outside of liking Curren$y). It's like the Stronger video - I'm more inclined to think that the director wanted to mimic Akira than Kanye being some closet anime fan.

While I'm sure some rap enthusiasts will like it, I certainly did not like this song/video.

That's crazy! I actually kinda like it. Also:

Does anybody hear a Chrono Trigger tune at about 38 seconds in? I've always thought I heard a part from the theme music from the future timeline in Chrono Trigger. Thought that was pretty neato.

It says I can't watch it because the content has been "blocked" in my "country."

You damn Canadians.
