Okay this has happened before to some of you I'm sure. Do you ever read the back of your RPG game boxes? you know how they go, about 4-6 pictures and some comments on what you will get from the game. well some time they lie, and that is just disapointing. Who's with me?
So lets see...
Rogue galaxy: The box sais over 100 hours of gameplay. Oh yeah right, I went through every dingeon including the secret ones and I got up to about 40 hours of gameplay. LIAR!!!!
That's all that comes to mind so far :P.
I'll hunt for more lies tomorow.

I dont know how it would work in that case, but a pussy defense would be that overall the game can provide over 100 hours of gameplay as a gamer can spend more time than normal in getting through the game by grinding or playthroughs. As they dont say it is actually differred gameplay, it works out.
I normally dont take anything from a box seriously. I actually laugh when they quote game sites with just one single word from the review. I prefer to read reviews and/or dicussions at forums about a game before buying it, even if the box promises a blowjob from Scarlett Johansson with every purchase.

DDS2 used the score AllRPG gave it. I was so proud when I saw that.

I can't recall this happening to me. I'm usually smart enough to check reviews and such online thoroughly before making any kind of purchase.

Thats because Atlus actually had a good relationship with allrpg. I dont know if we still have that.

Not as much I don't think. But then again DDS2 wasn't out until too long ago especially here in the EU and the ad I say was from here. I think it's a matter of contacting Atlus if possible. Have them know how much we love them.
They're not going to be happy to see our Baroque review.

I am pretty sure they understand when a game fails. I havent played it and havent read the review or any other review for that matter, but if a game sucks it sucks. Unless IGN is reviewing, in that case they will make a great review if you give them enough money. ****ing whores.

I may get laughed at for this but I have found that, for the most part, the reviews that I agreed with the most were from G4's X-Play. Now if you are not in the US, you may be going "What the Hell is he talking about?"

Thats not really funny. I hate Sessler and wish he died in the most horrible way imaginable, which may or may not involve a heated up pole up his ass.
I mean look at his face, look

Now if that face is not begging to be totally punched to the 8th circle of death I dont know what else. Also he speaks like a ****ing retard.

I agree with your assessment of Sessler as an individual but so far the show has been pretty close on most of their reviews, at least in my experience. I have went against their reviews a few times and got burned and I have went with them and didn't enjoy the game as much as they did. Overall though, I think they have been right more often than some of the mags or websites. I have been checking this site out for several years but mostly for release dates. I don't think I have checked out the reviews section on here. BTW, love the userpic.

I don't see why people hate on the G4 crew, they do a pretty good job at letting you know about the hottest games at the time and they don't sugarcoat it. If a game sucks, they will tell you just how much so. If a game is good, but has some flaws, they'll note those.
To be on topic no box comes to mind right now, but I'm sure I've been disappointed by reading the boxes growing up. I know the trailer for Beatdown made me want the game, but I hated myself for buying it cause it sucked so hard.

I am sorry, I thought I had made my point, just look at this goddamn prick, he has douchebag written all over him, he has that same mutated gene that Ben Afleck has, no matter what they do, its always a prick move. Its like a super power, like the opposite of the charm and charisma that Christian Bale, Daniel Craig and Ryan Reynolds have.

See, here he has the golden opporunity, a one on one fight against the biggest idiot in the world and, well i dont wanna say enemy, he is sort of like that retarded villain that is always messing up things but they always end up back firing, but yeah enemy of videogamers, and what does Sessler ****ing do? He starts to ramble unintelligibly, I couldnt understand a word he was saying, he starts rising his voice and doing that thing with his stupid mug and what happens, he actually made Jack Thompson seem normal, like he couldnt even understand his stupidity.
Adam Sessler made Jack Thompson seem ****ing eloquent. And thats why I hate Adam Sessler. Webb, well I dont really care about her, she is pretty much worthless.

I don't think that Adam is the actual reviewer, he is just the big mouthpiece that is chosen to deliver the reviews. Do I think he is a waste of flesh, yea. Do I watch it for his "witty, cough cough" repartee, no. I watch it because usually, their reviews are spot on.

I don't even have G4, haven't seen one of their reviews in a year now.
Stupid cheap ass cable company.
A lot of times, the trailers for games lie even more than the back of the box does. They find every cutscene of gameplay they can find, make a trailer out of it, then present it like the entire game looks like that, when usually, the gameplay looks much different.
I have to admit though, that this latest generation, there isn't so much of a difference as there once was.

I only pay attention to the box's artwork and design. I never read any information about it that is found on the box. I usually do a lot of research and ask friend's in the chat/forum and so forth about the game before I go out and buy it to make sure I know I will enjoy it. I cannot recall any time in my life of when I have bought a game just because of what it said on the case.

Maybe it just happened to you Fallen, you played too fast. I yet to complete the Jungle world in Rogue Galaxy but I already clocked 50 hours gameplay. Maybe you did not master the weapons before you synthesized them or maybe you did run back to open every single chest scattered all over the planets using special keys yaa.

Me too. Unless it's a series I've always played and enjoyed ( FF, Suiko,), I don't buy anything anymore unless I've checked it out thoroughly online first. Box art lies!

If it makes you feel better, its the same thing I thought when I first saw it two, and yes, almost bought it because of that alone, and because it looked pretty.
Then a friend revealed the truth and i just dont trust a game that has such effeminate characters.

I think everyone thought the protagonist was a girl at first in Magna Carta.
But they had to take away all the lesbian action.

That is one of the games I was trying to remember in the "worst game ever" thread. God, did that one suck. The camera control(non-existent) was one of it's worst features. That is one of the very few rpg's that I never finished. Friggin', frackin' fruckin', Magna Carta!!!!

It's really stupid when boxes have large claims on them that can't be justified, same can be said for some of the ads for games as well. FF 3 springs to mind with it's over 1000 different possible team combinations. Yes it's possible to do it, but it's so crazy that no one in their right mind would bother to formulate every single combination. Guess it comes down to doing your homework on a game instead of just walking into the store and blindly purchasing something.

Sword of Mana was advertised as being a multiplayer game before it came out. All the ads were boasting about how you could go "adventuring with your friends" and all that shit. Not only did it not deliver on the promise, but the game was a generic pile of shit to boot. Boring, uninspired gameplay, uninteresting plot, and some of the worst dialog I've ever had the displeasure of reading.
I'd say the best part is that I didn't pay for it, but I do feel bad for my best friend who got it for me as a gift. I never had the heart to tell him it was as bad as it was, so I just lent it to him to find out. :P

That depends on how you play the game and what you do in the game.
The 100 hours could include everything like the Insect matches, Special Hunts, customizing your characters and their abilities, getting all the special weapons and armour and such.
I'm very sure you cannot finish everything in 40 hours. That is impossible, unless you're using cheat codes to jump ahead (like getting the weapons and armour and such).
When I was playing Front Mission 4, I have been so damn frustrated by the lack of money. So I used gameshark code to get 999,999 worth of money. Did buy everything and the game went very smoothly. What supposed to be 10 hours have suddenly become 1 hour because I was shooting everything with the lastest armour, gear parts and weapons I could get my hands on.

Now that you remind me about the Insect thingy, is shitty coz you need to constantly feed them and hunt for them. What were the developers thinking huh? Tamagochi in RPG? STUPID!

Nope, it says Playtime is up to 100 hours. If you pick up game box for FFX International for example, it could say the same thing on it (I remember it well).
Playtime here could means everything from best weapons and armour, to the itsy bitsy things like smallest sidequests. I don't remember a single game which had labelled stating "Main storyline up to 100 hours".

Most box text is written to make the game sound as good as possible and so they almost always lie to an extent; whether by excessive enthusiasm, hyperbole, or omission. One example that stands out in my memory is from the otherwise excellent Wizardry VII. The box proclaimed that NPCs would compete with you for the various prizes but as implemented it seemed as little more than an invisible timer and thus a real letdown for me.
I'm sorry. I referred to a game outside the zone. I should have spent 2 posts, 5 pictures and a video (amounting to over 2000 lines) on my dislike for a TV host. That would have been interesting and relevant.

Wizardry: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizardry_VII). That should tell you all you need or want to know. It was ported to the Playstation and Saturn in Japan. It still amazes me how popular Wizardry is over there.
Checking some of the boxes in my collection I see words like 'intense' and 'epic' being bandied around. Shadow Hearts laughably claims to have 'action packed turn-based combat'. Even Super Hydlide sounds like an amazing RPG experience based on the back of the box. That's a lie if there's ever been one.

Heh, I really should just sit down one day and take break to read what is all on the back of all of the boxes and cases I still have for my games. That sounds like it would actually be entertaining. I wish I knew where my Sega Genesis and original GameBoy boxes were at, though. There is no telling.

HAHAHA, I can't agree enough. I haven't seen the actual box for the game but I own it and it's just terrible. One of the worst games I've ever played.
Can you ever trust a box? No. As already been stated before, no one makes a decision to buy a game based on the box only. If you do, you haven't done your homework and are taking a big risk at being disappointed.
Although here is a box that doesn't lie...
