What was the first RPG you ever played and really made you interested in the genre of gaming?

I know for myself the first game was Dragon Warrior. I remember borrowing it from another person and playing it a lot for a long time. I didn't understand it very well, I was pretty young, but I liked the way the game was presented and played out. There was something so intriguing about gaining levels and a stronger character to me. Plus that overworld music has been stuck in my head for almost 20 years now.

Everyone else?

FF8 ... I asked the vendor to put the game on, test it out. The starting scene with the music really hooked me to the game and to RPG ever since. I was about 23 years old at that time, if not mistaken.

Well, the first RPG I remember watching somebody play was Secret of Mana for the SNES. At the time when I was a kid, I did not own a SNES, so I missed out on a lot of great RPGs as a child. I had a Sega Genesis, though, I do not remember ever having any kind of RPG for it. However, the first RPG I did play was Final Fantasy VII when I first got my PS1. It absolutely blew my mind away. I had never experienced anything like it before. After playing many other RPGs, I can look back and say that even though Final Fantasy VII is not the greatest RPG out there at all by any means, it really did open doors up for me to explore other RPGs. Ever since that game, I have loved this genre the most.

The first RPG I ever played was Temple of Apshai. I remember lusting after the Coleco port (the copy I played was on a friend of the family's computer) although I never did acquire it. The first RPG I played to any real extent was Ultima III. Although truth be told I was sold on the idea of RPGs the instant I saw a copy of Dungeons & Dragons in a shop window in Kamloops.

Oh, and I got a copy of Phantasy Star the Christmas it came out in North America and thus entered the wide world of Japanese console RPGs about as early as possible for a boy in Canada.

PS. For some reason threads like these always make me feel really old. ;)

Long story short, my first RPG was Chrono Trigger. I bought it from a bargain bin years ago. I started to play it, and got really confused (mainly because I'd never played that type of game), so I took it back and got something else. Haha.

Pokemon is what really brought me into the genre. I eventually bought the PS version of Chrono Trigger and got to play it with glee.

Good times.

First was Earthbound and I found it really hard. I had no notion of leveling up or getting new equipment.

The first I actually played and got a grasp on was Super Mario RPG.

One of my early RPG stories is the time when I rented Final Fantasy 6 (Mog looked cute) and resumed a game save in Kefka's tower. My first fight was against one of the God statues and I was massacred.

My first RPG was FFIV in the Super Famicom. It was in Nihongo. I played it together with my friends as the console and game wasnt mine. We took about 1-2 months of constant dedication of meeting up after school at his place to finish up the game.

The first RPG I own was Vermillion when I got it as a gift from my dad. He got me the console from HK. That time no game vendors have yet to sell the Sega Genesis console over in Malaysia. Another of my friend also got a Sega Genesis from Singapore at that time and he got Shining in the Darkness. I remember we shared/ exchanged the games since we were all very excited about the RPG genre. As I wasnt able to afford buying so many games (I only have two Sega titles! The other one was Sonic) as compared to my rich friend does, I mostly played his RPG collections. He imported a huge collection of RPG but they were all Nihongo -- Phantasy Star 3, Shining Force, etc.

Exactly how long ago was this? 1990s?

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, which I really don't like to count.

Other than that, I first played Chrono Trigger in 1995.

1988? That's about 20 yrs ago.

I remember my first non-RPG - Bare-knuckles on Sega 32-bit. Played at my friend's house. Didn't like video games much back then.

Then started to play in the Arcades, got hooked up with Pac Man and those type. FF8 was my first RPG, in 2002~3. Hard to believe it have been almost 15years now.

Oh ... my mother still complains I'm playing too much video game. :o

Breath of Fire III. I rented it on a whim. Then I went out and bought it. Before that, I played nothing but fighting games.

I feel old by saying this, but in the late 80's it was Dragon Warrior. We got it for free because it you took the brand new Nintendo Power magazine that came out, you got this game for free.

This game addicted me to RPGs and was also inside of my first 10 games I've ever played in my life. It addicted me to random battles, exploration, item finding, turn-based systems, etc.

It is so old and yet it still works so well.

Things like Dragon Warrior and Super Mario Brothers, for example, may not be in my top 30 games of all time, but they are both legendary to me.

Dragon Warrior (first one, for NES). Never finished it. I was only six or seven at the time, I sucked at everything.

Technically, it was Dragon Warrior. But I can barely even remember that shit. FFIV, though, I can remember quite well. SOM also stands out.

EDIT: I'd really like to see Priest's answer to this.

It's done. You just have to scroll up the thread a bit. By the way, Temple of Apshai was released on the TSR-80 in 1979 though I probably didn't play it until '81 or '82. Ultima III came out in 1983 but again it was probably '85 or '86 when I first played it. I figured some readers might be unfamiliar with the titles and/or release dates.

Hmmm... technically speaking the first computer RPG that I played was at the PC as well but I didnt finish any of them since I don't own a PC. I remember vividly playing for a few hours of Might and Magic: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum (1986) at my friend's PC. It was stupid coz the loading of the games was so damn long because it run in the DOS or was it Apple at the computer center that I played this? I didnt quite understanding what the game is all about because of the difficult English it uses but I was certainly amaze with the ability to control a moving figter and magic user character. I remember playing Ultima too but don't remember which installment it was. I think it was IV or was it V? Sharks! This is long time history already, sorry for not remembering the details!

Hmmm ... speaking of PC games, I think the first game I have ever seen was Wolfenstein - back in 1994. 5 minute watching it, I always puked on the guy playing it. Which could be why I hate FPS to this day. :P

I couldn't understand how the graphics could be created. Always thought that the background graphics are the same, just the characters which were moving. Similar to the illusion we see in the 1940s black and white Disney cartoon. You draw similar pictures but with slight difference, stack it together and flip it very fast, it will give an illusion that the character were moving.

Thought that the enemies were blowing up because the player was giving commands (to the enemies) to blow up and that the whole game was based on blowing up the enemy by typing away.

Updated version of my first RPG. Make that, my first RPGs:

1. Dragon Warrior -- Legend.
2. Dragon Warrior 2 -- This is the least loved DW of the people born around the same time I was. Don't know why but I personally love it.
3. Final Fantasy -- My 3rd favorite video game of all time.
4. Dragon Warrior 3 -- My favorite DW of all time.
5. Final Fantasy II SNES -- Favorite game of all time, soon to be DS version instead.
6. Dragon Warrior 4
7. Final Fantasy III SNES

That is my order, if it is the correct order of release.

Pretty sure that was the name of the characters that were at your side in Valkyrie Profile. The characters that died, would become your alies and help you fight to protect the world. Good game.

It's neat to see the broad spectrum of RPGs across the board here for starters into the genre.

My first true RPG was Super Mario RPG back when it came out. I was kind of interested in them after reading the Epic Center in Nintendo Power so I bought it with a 10$ off coupon that came in the magazine. After that I played other RPG's like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. I did play a couple Strategy games with RPG elements before that like Ogre Battle.

I was away from gaming for the later part of the 80's and the 90's, played paper DnD in the late 80's. Finally got back into gaming in 2003, bought a PS1 and first game for it, was also my first console RPG, FFVII. It hooked me. It was like Star Wars for me, a giant leap forward. Keep in mind that I missed everything from the original Nintendo up to that point. I have spent the years since trying to find and finish every RPG for the PS1 and PS2. I also have played quite a few PC RPG's to date. It is the only genre of game I am interested in or any good at.

Einherjar is name for Souls which Valkyries recruits in Valkyrie's Profile game. It basically means that you're an "Unsent".

I really can't remember, but I would say Pokemon Blue. In terms of traditional RPG's? Ummm... no clue. Hell, now that I think about it, it was probably Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. I'm so glad I started with that and not something like FFVII :p
But seriously, there couldn't have been a better game to get me hooked.

Aww, nostalgia! My dad bought my mom FF2 (US) one year, and I used to stay up really late and watch her play. As soon as she was finished, I had to play myself. So yup, that'd be my first game.

I know this thread is old, but I just read the whole thing and it got me thinking. I generally say that my first RPG was Chrono Trigger. There has always been a computer in my house when I was growing up so my siblings, my parents, and I were always playing computer games, and as a kid I would pretty much play anything that was already on the computer. I played Chrono Trigger after an uncle gave us a CD that contained an SNES emulator and a bunch of games, I saw my brother playing it and I thought it looked cute or something. So, I picked up the gravis gamepad and figured out how to play the game since I'd never played or seen a turn based RPG before. I loved it, and proceeded to play all of the other RPG's on the CD: FF4, 5 & 6, SoM, SD3, Breath of Fire, Lufia, Terranigma, etc. He must have been a fan as well. I was in grade 8 and so I guess I was around 14.

However, before I played Chrono Trigger, I had played Ultima Underworld (never beat it because it was too scary, but I had fun talking to all the creatures and buying things and trading with them), and my older brother used to force me to play DnD with him. This was all in elementary school and before I had played Chrono Trigger, but I would still consider Chrono Trigger as the first RPG I played that had me coming back for more.

My very first RPG was Final Fantasy VI, which back in those days we called it FF3, but whatever. I remember my brother convincing me to get it from christmas (as I was the one who had the SNES) back in 94. Played it, put it down for several years, beat it and I was hooked on RPGs.

The Varsh

The Varsh's first RPG (that he can officially recall playing) was Legend of Legaia. His friend had it and The Varsh and he took turns playing it. To this day The Varsh has still never beaten it. The Varsh has vague memories of playing an RPG on the NES when he was very young but he has no idea what it was. All The Varsh can remember is running around a castle because the enemies there were easy. The first RPG that The Varsh actually beat was FF VIII. GO SQUALL!!!

My first true RPG would probably have been Final Fantasy, but I had played adventure/RPGs like Zelda or Faxanadu before Final Fantasy, and Adventure for the Atari, if you want to count that.

I basically learned how to read playing RPGs. My older brother had borrowed some Final Fantasy's from his buddy, IV and VI, and I attempted to play them at the age of like 6 or 7. I remember I tried VI first cause it was just released and it had better graphics than IV. I got to the mountain area where you're supposed to learn Sabin's blitz's and I didn't how to input the directions properly. I think I pushed A too soon or something. I eventually got tired of trying to figure that out and played through IV. Man was it a struggle. I remember getting stuck so many times. The four fiends kicked my ass for like 2 weeks. I think I was around 8 when I beat IV. I've been playing RPG's occasionally since then.
