Hedwig: It just works as a movie. It provides a great lead character who you pretty much cant relate to at all (in the begining), humour, nice ambient music and soundtrack, crazy cuts and its just delivered in the most random way possible. Its one of those movies you are not aware at what you ae watching until it ends. I remember the first time I saw it, I was weirded out for the entire film and when the credits hit I thought to myself, Damn that was a great flick.
On Donnie Darko, I think its a very entertaining and interesting movie. Totally makes you forget Jake Gyllenhall is the lead. Plus it has Jena Malone in it, and Jena Malone is cute as a button.

Monty Python was making fun of suicide attacks before making fun of suicide attacks was cool. Bitches.
Aside from a few posters, it seems like a lot of posters are trying to put shit up that will make them seem "deep." I specifically take issue with Donnie Darko, as it exemplifies a growing degredation in our celluloid tastes, me thinks. A dark, brooding movie that has its fair share of twists and turns, sure enough, but the problem is that it revels in them, slapping you across the face with its big, massive cock of unpredictability, screaming "LOOK AT ME! DON'T YOU THINK I'M INTERESTING!?" Subtlety, the ability to crack a brilliant joke or turn the direction of a movie on a dime without throwing 30 signs up before hand, is dead; every director now has to give a knowing wink whenever he does something he deems clever; the pause that characters take after delivering a funny line, allowing the audience to laugh without missing anything else (see any Judd Apatow movie vs. Downey Jrs side quips in Ironman), or understanding that complex narration and plot twists don't necessarily make a good movie if the underlying directoral ability is not there (see Snatch vs. LayerCake for reference). Movies that have no aspirations for subtlety or intellect should cast off any allusions to the two and embrace what they are (300, Starship Troopers). Don't try to have both, it rarely succeeds (though I'd say that South Park and Monty Python nail it).
Phakiel
06-14-2008, 04:47 PM
WOW WOW WOAH HOLD ON THERE.
Starship Troopers is certainly one of the greatest masterpieces in cinematic history and one of the greatest love stories of our time. Its so badass, Paul Verhoeven was reading the book, which is an interesting tale about the politics and run abouts of military societies, read the first chapter and said it was too boring and then he just went with the flow and delivered the cheesiest most insane futuristic military movie ever made.
Would you like to know more?

I absolutely love The Princess Bride though. The Breakfast Club is always awesome. Hmm, I haven't seen it in a while, but Heathers, great movie. Something about Gone in 60 Seconds always gets me hot. I dunno if it's Cage, Jolie, or the cars. Probably the cars.

Interesting to see mention of Aguirre, The Wrath of God. I don't think I know a single person that has seen it, yet it's been on my "to see list" for quite a while. I really need to get on top of that, I've let it hang for too long. I've heard so many stories about the sheer craziness of the production process, beyond that of even Apocalypse Now. Real blood and sweat work like that always makes for interesting art. I'm curious though Abom what you think of Herzog as a director, if you respect the majority of films his career has produced or if he's been a more selective interest for you.

Oh, I love Herzog. He's actually my favorite living film director. I can't think of any films he's made that I didn't like -- some could have been better, like Rescue Dawn, but otherwise he's produced a body of work in pursuit of his "ecstatic truth" that reads like a wishlist of achievements for anyone who aspires to be a filmmaker.
All of his periods are worth watching, especially the documentaries -- he hasn't pissed out in the last decade like a lot of the other directors of his generation have.
Check out Aguirre. It's slow and moody and gorgeous and has amazing music courtesy of Popol Vuh, and it's equal parts horrifying and euphoric.
I haven't seen Donnie Darko, either.
I'll go with the first 5 to pop into my head:
Apollo 13
The Neverending Story
Tombstone
The Shawshank Redemption
40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up

I would say it's just as "trendy" to hate on the movie as it is to proclaim your love for it. Not that you can't legitimately enjoy the movie (I do have it in my top five, remember), but I think some people do say they like it to sound "indie."
I first saw Donnie Darko when it still deserved the "cult" label, so I never had it really hyped up for me. A friend had recommended it to me, said it was among his favorites. The movie was impossible to find, too. So, with no real expectations going in, I was blown away. Now, if I had seen the movie for the first time today, with everything that's been said about it, I really don't know how well I would have taken it. I'm sure I would have still enjoyed it, but the impact may have been lessened.
I don't even know you, really, but I totally would've called at least three of those if I were asked to guess.

Lawlz. I rented Casshern on a whim several weeks back. I don't think I've ever seen anything so campy. The disc I rented was scratched so I didn't quite get to see the whole thing. Actually I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing. What I did see left me teetering on the edge of liking it or hating it for those same campy reasonings. Either way, contemporary Japanese filmmakers are hilariously awesome, in their own "special" sort of way. Haha. That recent movie Shinobi, based off The Kouga Ninja Scrolls had a similar camp factor, but I at least felt it pulled it off to some extent.
