View Full Version : What Suikoden VI should include, if it goes next-gen.

I have a rather lengthy list, but I think that after playing through most of V I've spotted things that need to be included/fixed in a sequel.

- Real-time war battles. I'm talking massive armies... not just the uncontrollable glimpses we got in V. I'm talking on the scale of Rome: Total War. With your characters spotted throughout the battlefield. Maybe be able to take control of them?

- Multiple characters that can fill each Star. You'll still have 108 SoD at the end, but I think this idea would work... especially considering Suikoden II had you choose between Valeria and Kasumi. Some characters didn't even count as a Star but could still fight with you (Tir). Multiple ways of attaining Stars... if I make one mistake I should be able to find other ways of recruiting people.

- Night and day cycle. I want the castle to change accordingly... some characters/events can only be seen at night. Some characters only recruitable at night.

- 3D behind-the-back view that Suikoden IV had. V just pulled you too far away from the action. Cutscenes often lacked impact because you can't see any of the characters beyond their different-colored garb. Many characters seemed entirely similar (Lelei and Cius come to mind)

- Mix up gameplay between turn-based and active-time? I'm not sure how they would do this... but I wouldn't mind if the series started to blend with action RPGs in slight ways. It'd be interesting to have active-time battling with six characters.

- Every character that can pick up a weapon be actually usable in some way. Many Suikodens feature at least a dozen characters that just plain suck. I want all of them to have a use in battle... not just sit there and collect dust because of the Pokemon collect-em-all syndrome.

- Train characters to use different weapons. Have "proficiency" levels with characters. Since many characters change weapons between games (like Lorelai, for example), I think that may be interesting. Also, in war battles, characters that use certain weapons should command battalions of soldiers that use that weapon. This was touched upon a little in V but not that much.

- Decent graphics. I'm not asking for much... but the 3D Suikodens have not been impressive.

- A better soundtrack. The acoustic feel of Suikoden I was just amazing... it went downhill from there (and only went up with Suikoden III's intro theme. Wow).

That's all I can think of at the moment. Oh yeah, more interaction with your castle. Minigames with the blacksmiths and runemasters and all that would be interesting. Also... more people! The only people in my castle shouldn't be just the SoD and a couple random maids! It should be BUSTLING with soldiers and civilians!

-A non-silent protagonist. I'm sick of them.

God yes. I would be so glad if that happened.

I just remembered something:

- Make war battles non-scripted. If I want to attack that fort and I think I have enough troops, I damn well will go for it! Open-world warring would be pretty awesome. Also, enemies attacking you when you least expect it... like real wars.

The main character's special rune not being solely healing magic at the beginning and not getting it after 15 hours of game play...SUIKODEN V!

Dude... that was quite ridiculous I agree. The Dawn Rune isn't even that great...

I should have my rune within 5 hours or this game sucks!!!!!

And it should be the best rune in the game!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring back Tir McDohl!

Even just your second point would be enough for me. That's my biggest problem with the Suikoden franchise - the "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" premise. At least don't make us have to consult strategy guides so we don't get permanently locked out of the best ending.

God yes. Suikoden V is absolutely criminal in that respect.

Also to get a bigger fan base so they make more games for a longer time, they should throw Richard into this title for noobs so they don't get eating alive.

Doesn't practically every Suikoden game have a character that can be easily abused, anyway? I haven't finished Suikoden V, but what makes Richard so different?

Richard is ridiculous. He parries and counterattacks constantly.

ANYWAY. Can someone, for fun, name an RPG with a 'good ending' that they've attained without a walkthrough or advice or something?

Chrono Trigger's good ending isn't too hard to get - just do all the sidequests. The game practically tells you you've qualified for it when you save your game, if you have, and the world isn't so large that they're hard to pinpoint.

Persona 3's good ending is pretty obvious when you come to the chance to attain it.

And I forget, did Suikoden III even have an alternate ending, besides whatever changes your choice of Fire Hero makes? The bonus was just the extra scenario, right?

twerp

Yeah but the extra scenario was the best part of the game.

Rune animations. These need an overhaul, and perhaps the new gen systems can help with this. I was playing V recently and realized how boring they were.

Unites. Ugh... V was so disappointing in this area. One person slashes, slashes, slashes, the next person slashes, slashes, and slashes. That's it? These need creativity. It seems they were better in S1 and S2 for some reason.

Battle formation. I always liked the "Grandia" system where the team ran around the battlefield instead of stood in their spot. Let them move around like a real battle would be. Arc the Lad did it well where the characters were still "fighting" when it wasn't their turn. It at least looked like they weren't taking turns. I think The Last Remnant will be doing something similar.

I think Suikoden III made a valiant effort with that concept. It was a little slow, sure, but it did help make the battles seem more life-like. It also made area of effect magic a bit more dangerous.

It's more than a passing resemblance, certainly. We need someone to decode the moonspeak!

Info on Suikoden Tierkreis.

Looks terrible.

Info:
- 50% complete
- Characters are 3d
- Backgrounds 2d
- Traditional rpg it looks like
- You tap the touch screen, making battles move at a fast pace
- The main headline of the article is "The Chosen 108 heroes have been destroyed?!"
- Six characters, not four, in battles
- MP replaces Rune system... so basically Suikoden is just like every other RPG now. Yay!

I played IV for about 3 hours and then returned it, rented V and did about the same.

Sooo, for VI, I'd like a game that is comparable in the fun-factor to the first installment, if not the second.

You should have given V a bit more time. It's a bit slow getting started, but once it did, it was great, and I really enjoyed it.

At first, I didn't think I was going to like it either, and was quite disappointed. I'm glad I stuck it out though. I ended up ranking it right up there just after II on my favorites in the series.

I agree with you on IV though- it should have been a lot better.

IV was awful and V was far too easy. Hopefully this one doesn't crap on the old formula because it's on a handheld.

Suikoden V was so slow, but it actually was an amazing game after you got about 25 hours into it, and they finally started pushing the story along. They spent alot of time setting everything up within the family, but once all of the drama came to fruishon, it did an AMAZING job of keeping me intrigued for the remainder of the game.

I didn't even mind IV as much as other people on this forum. Though it's story was lacking, for some reason I enjoyed playing it. I didn't buy it however.

The new Suikoden needs to have a protagonist that looks cool. I hate playing with a lead character that's uglier than Prince, or a 70s Elvis. Maybe a quicker pace too? I do agree aswell that getting 108 stars every game is starting to wear on me. Some of those recruiting procedures are so damn complicated noone could pull them off without hours on gamefaqs.

Honestly, that's what kept me from finishing Suikoden V. I stopped for a while and when I came back I realized I'd be all over the FAQs trying to find my place, not even so much in the plot as in recruitment and what not.
