An article I just read: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=cancer-vaccine-tobacco-plants

Anyway. . .

Do you smoke tobacco? What are your thoughts about it?

I started smoking when I was about 16 years old. I was never peer pressured in smoking at all. I believe my curiosity got to me, and I have been smoking cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco out of hookahs ever since then. I enjoy smoking to tell you the truth, however, I do not enjoy the heart and chest pains that come with it. I am also not an asshole that will smoke around anyone and not care, especially when there are children close. The closest family member that smokes is my grandmother, and she has suffered quite a lot from it. When I was growing up, I would be over there every now and then, and I remember the smoke extremely bothered me. She finally stopped smoking around us when both my brother and cousin had horrible asthma when they were young. It kills so many people each day, and I am aware of how dangerous it is. Arkansas like many of states have banned smoking in public places, and I do not disagree with that at all. Even as a smoker, it would always bother me when somebody was smoking while I was eating a meal at a restaurant.

Why do I keep smoking? I am not quite sure. Yeah, I said I enjoy smoking, but that is not a good enough reason, and I know I need to stop. I have tried to quit once, and it was hell. I do not wish for anyone to start smoking for any reason in particular, but I still think it is the individual's right to smoke if that is what they decide, so I do not think it should be banned completely at all. Though, I do not see that happening anytime soon in the future.

I don't smoke. I never did. I will never do it. I don't like being around anyone that smokes. It really does things to me (dry throat, instant nosebleeds and breathing difficulties)

Very happy with the smoking ban. Finally can go into pubs and restos and not worry that a bunch of smokers will sit in the next table.

I'm not and have never been a smoker. Pretty much everyone in my family smokes, and all my friends always smoked. I was always the lone non-smoker in the pack. I've never been tempted to smoke, even a little bit, because the smell always bugged me. Not like it makes me sick, I just don't like it.

I smoked a pack of cigarettes when I was younger all in one day. I wanted to know what the fuss is all about. I woke up with a sore throat. I decided it's not for me but it doesn't bother me.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but I'll have shisha/sheesha/whatever once in a while. It's relaxing and enjoyable, but I try to limit myself so I go once a month, at most.

I started smoking around the time I was finishing high school and entering college. I had smoked before and when I was around 12 I used to steal ciggies from home and smoke them with friends before we started "extracurricular" activities (extracurricular in quotation marks since they were forced by the school) in the afternoons. It was however until I started college that I can consider to seriously smoke.

Back in those days I would probably smoke around at least half a pack of a full pack a day. I also lost many ciggies when people came up to me to ask for them, for some reason in college everybody and their mother smokes but no one carries ciggies. Pissed me off and eventually i just said no or that i only had one for me. I got this fame of being stingy but when you are losing 10 or 15 ciggies for smokers who dont buy their own vice, it pisses you off.

These days I only smoke when I go out drinking. I used to smoke around 5 or so a day after finishing law school but now I only smoke at bars or clubs and can go full weeks without smoking.

I think it's good that you can kind of pick them up and put them back down without a problem.

My husband is like that. He might smoke for a week or two, then not smoke at all for a years, it's never a problem at all for him to quit, he just stops. He usually only smokes now when he's really really stressed out.

Its quite odd in me. I have a highly corruptive personality but for some reason vices dont get ahold of me like to most people. I can engage in dubiously amoral, unhealthy and unethical activities but i dont create a habit. I drink more than an heterosexual non pedophiliac catholic priest but know when to stop and dont feel like it ties me down. Same with ciggies, all of the sudden, i just stopped smoking regularly. Sure I have my ciggie like once a month at the office when it has been a long day but back in the day when I started smoking it was like once a day.

I guess this is why I never got that deep into drugs when i was in college. Just tried them out and never looked at them deeply.

Then again on the other hand, I am a coffee fiend. 6 cups a day at the office, none on the weekend.

I used to smoke. Had my first cigarette at a Girl Scout's Meeting. True story. I also sniffed vodka for the first time (but didn't drink it). I was 12.

I smoked just randomly through the first 4 years, when I could randomly sneak into my parents room and steal a cigarette from my Dad's pack. I started smoking regularly when I was 16 and my older brother Alan was 18... He'd buy us our smokes! lol Got out of high school, and I only got worse. 18-20 years old, I smoked a pack a day.

I quit at 20, but I started again a year later, after I had Shingles. I quit yet again in August of the year I turned 21, because I had a boyfriend at the time that would constantly nag me about smoking, and I actually did want to quit.

I haven't touched a cigarette since Mid-August that year. So it's almost been 5 years since I quit. I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to smoke again. None. I smell the cigarette smoke several cars in front of me while driving...and I'll shut off my A/C or roll up the windows. I can't stand it that much.

Everyone else is entitled to do what they want to their bodies, but I won't ever date another smoker. The last guy I half-assed dated smoked, and it was nasty as all hell. I'm lucky the new dude doesn't smoke.

I guess I should elaborate and say that I've never tried cigarettes, but I had plenty of opportunities. Sometimes I'm glad that I was such a pussy when I was young.

Of course, I've never tried any drugs either. I want to get high sometime in the near future, though, because I hardly feel like a Montrealer as it is.

Well, I did steal some weed from my dad when I was in 9th grade, just to try it out. I didn't feel anything, so either I didn't smoke it right, or I've got an immunity from always being smoked around as a kid.

Otherwise, I've never done anything stronger than booze either. Well, the occasional pain pill like Lortab, and even that I hardly use, it makes me itch. Plus, my mom's a pill popper, so watching and listening to her is enough to warn me off that.

I don't think he robbed a bank, lol. But you never know what he did before I was born, but I know he was in state prison when I was born for something.

Now he just does the whole bad checks all over town (seriously, why do banks keep giving the man checking accounts?), stealing checks from his mom, and tearing apart the entire structure of the home I grew up in to sell the copper pipes and wires for dope money.

My parents' divorce left a hidden scar in my psyche and its one of the causes of my unbalanced personality. That, overprotecting family members, mother, the ridiculous amount of porn i have watched, women, bad "friends" and The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee.

My dad's quit 'cold turkey' several times and always gone back (obviously, or else he would have quit once.) When I was younger, I saw him hacking and spitting and one day he showed me what he coughed up. It pretty much turned me off from the habit then and there.

No porn aitn bad, but when you watch too much of it, it changes something in you. Like for instance, and I am a 100% honest here, I cannot have normal intercourse. I have to involve some type of unconventional practice which can range from fun, to kinky, to depraved to possibly illegal. I have asked girls to slap me, I have attempted anal sex without asking, used dildos, etc.

I am not sure, maybe its not really porn which caused this, maybe I was just genetically predisposed to these deviances, my sister told me some twisted shit mother had told her about her doing with my father, well for the 80s it was twisted, so it could be in my blood.

I smoke profusely and like a madman, and it only seems to be getting worse and worse. I think I had my first when I was 16 or so, then spent months without smoking, then kinda started bumming them from people. I think I was about 18 when I actually started buying packs, and quickly went from 3 a day to 5, to 10, to almost a pack, and now I'm over a pack a day, not counting parties/bar nights, where it gets real serious. I don't know why, I just like them. Bored? Smoke a cigarette. Angry? Smoke a cigarette. After eating? Definitely smoke a cigarette. It starts being good with everything. Truly sick though, I hope I can quit after college.

I've never even tried a cigarette. I was only once kind of pressured to smoke, and it was some pipe-smoking tobacco. Still didn't; not my thing. Closest I'm come to smoking tobacco is smoking a blunt, which I suppose is technically smoking tobacco, even if it is a small amount (not to say what substance it contained; wouldn't want to break any rules here, of course).

Back then it wasnt a real goal to make a stripper shove a cigarette up her ass either, and this was college. Somethings just happen. Now if I am ever presented with the option to snort cocain from a stripper's ass, I'd more than likely do it, because thats the type of person I am, it is not however something I conciously plan and conspire to do.

I tried to get addicted to cigarettes about five years ago. Eight solid months of smoking (after trying all sorts of brands I settled on Nat Sherman Classics, which are awesome) and no addiction ever took hold. My plan was to get addicted and quit cold turkey, just to see what it's like. Didn't work out.

Hadn't smoked, even taken a single drag, before my experiment, and haven't smoked any since.

Jarrid

I am not familiar with Nat Sherman cigarettes. I have not seen them around here. Also, if you do not mind answering, what was your experiment that helped you stop smoking?

No, the experiment was to get addicted and quit. But I never got addicted. One day I just said, "**** this," finished off the last two cigarettes in my pack and never touched another.

I love hookahs(shishas). It was the first tabacco product i ever smoked. Every so often I'll have a cigarette with a glass of wine or a clove cig over drinks and conversation. I've never felt the pull or desire to smoke more. If i ever buy i pack i usually smoke 2 then give it away. I think they're nice to enjoy every so often, but I don't see it ever being a habit. I don't really get hooked on anything that easily though.

As for people who smoke, i don't mind as long as they're conciderate about it. People who stand upwind of you and start smoking without asking are rude. Or people who smoke while you're eating without asking if you mind first. All that bugs me.

Sometimes i pretend to smoke at work because smokers get more breaks than non-smokers.

My favorite reason for a cigarette is the victory smoke. Nothing is better than finishing up on some ball-busting task with moderate degrees of success, and treating yourself to a little poison. Much better than the failure smoke, which is tastes of shame and disgust.

been smoking for 3 years now. started right after I joined the Coast Guard. go figure right? it started driving around in the car with one of my friends. she got the first pack from one of the guys in her class who threw it at her and told her not to give them back to him. she pulled out the pack when we where driving around bored and after that first cig (a camel light I believe) I pulled into the gas station grabbed a pack of marlboro red 100's and that was that. really I do it out of enjoyment and to lessen the stress built up from work and other things that get to me.
pretty much I dont really want to stop smoking, but I probably should. I just dont have motivation to quit. so yeah. of course I am a weird smoker, I dont just buy one kind. I normally have a different pack every other day. pisses off my other smoker friends too. cause when ever someone bums its never the same thing. lol

normally its either Camel Turkish Royals, Marlboro Red 100's, Marlboro Menthal, Marlboro Smooth's, or Newports. those are the most common you'll see me with. :/

Oo, a smoking thread. *res*

I've been smoking off and on for getting on ten years, I reckon. Seems shorter, but doesn't it always?

Just pre-made ones these days (EDIT: Oh, Mayfair... because they're cheap). I used to smoke roll-ups to save money. I've never smoked a pipe, but that's about it.

I smoke because I fucking love it... and I'd like that to imply that I need it. I stop every six months or so, for anywhere up to two months (sometimes fits and starts of a few weeks at a time for a while), but I can't imagine a day that started any other way.
I can't imagine (or deal with) idling without one. I can't imagine finishing a meal without smoking, or having a cup of tea, even walking down the street. I prefer one after sex, but it's not as essential...

I have a lot more thinking space when I'm not smoking, and I don't like thinking without direction.

Somehow it romanticises everything. (http://www.esquire.com/features/learning-to-smoke-0308)

I'll probably quit someday, but there are times I know I can handle it mentally, and times I know I can't. I feel it as a crutch now, where it used to be simple enjoyment.

Djarum Blacks, Nat Sherman's Fantasias or Black & Golds, Zanzibars, occasionally Lucky Strikes, these are all brands I smoke, though I haven't bought any cigs for about three weeks now because I haven't had any money. I haven't experienced any nic-fits or cravings, so I guess I wasn't all that addicted. I started smoking last spring to cope with the stress of mid-terms, and to give me an excuse to stand outside and shoot the shit with people. I can honestly say that most of the friends I've made since going to college, I met because I was outside smoking.

I smoke shisha whenever I get the chance. Last semester one of my friends had a hookah, and we used to bust it out every night and smoke shisha in the dorm courtyard. Great times.

Wow its the same way for me. Im trying to quit right now but I dont know how long thats going to last. I say that because Im not trying to quit because I want to. Im trying to quit because cigarette prices are ridiculous and Im out of a job. So its really coming down to whether I want to buy games or cigarettes. Never thought I would have to choose one addiction over the other.

I smoke cigarettes. I started when I was maybe 14 years old. Back then it was just for kicks, but as I grew older, it became more habitual. I quit from the the ages of 18-20. That helped rejuvenate my body a bit; but, as it turns out, when I found out my mom had lung cancer(yes, from smoking[for thirty years]), I started again. It's nice when I'm stressed out, otherwise it's just kind of gross. My hopes are to quit, but I know I need to actually do it instead of just thinking about it.
