Anyone playing Final Fantasy IV for the DS? I picked it up the day after it came out. I played it for a tiny bit, and I put it down thinking, "Damn, am I really playing this game again?" The night before last, I was really needing something to get my mind off of things, so I decided to pick the game up again. I am loving it to death now. I am still not very far at all, and the last thing I did was heal Rosa with the pearl. The Antlion Cave was amazing, and I was just so impressed with it for some reason. The voice acting is actually not that bad either. The battle system is great and feels brand new, and of course, I am enjoying the graphics.

Thumbs up.

FF:CC DS voice acting wasn't bad, and FF4 might have used the same exact 'studio' to do it. FF4 is my favorite game of all time, always has been, and this game is even better. Someone wake me up!

I'd do anything to get that game but it's not out around here yet.

voice acting? huh perhaps when I get back from this patrol from hell I will have to pick it up.

Suitcase: Yeah, that is a bummer. Early September, I believe, so that is not too far away. It is well worth the wait!

Mark: Yeah, you need to pick it up as soon as possible, man.

It is one helluva tough game from what Lone is telling me in the chat.

Haha, yeah. Cecil's "WHHHHYYY?" is epic in a huge cliche kind of way.

Cecil's WHYYYY quote helps FF4 new comers understand the seriousness of the situation. The original game couldn't emit that emotion as well in text.

I noticed alot of characters got nerfed from the psx port (FF chronicles, the only version I've played) except for Cecil, like Kain's HP is almost half of what it usually is. Then the boss fights are a hell of alot harder, which is good, since I remember killing most bosses in 3 turns or less. Regardless I love this game and I'm getting ready to go to Babil Tower with my characters lvs. 32-38.

The original translated text got the point of FF4's story across just as well, if not better because it did not need useless lines and added text like FFIVDS has.

Either I have just played it too many times, but even a simple "Why?" would had been fine. From the start of the game on the Red Wing, Cecil's loyalty towards King Baron starts to decline, and he also mentions several times about the innocent people that did not fight back by taking their crystal in Mysidia for the King.

Suppose I'm a guy who's played about three hours into FFIV on the GBA, never touched the PSX or SNES versions. Would the DS copy be the way to go, or should I complete the GBA game I'd started?

I didn't see anything exactly, but you cannot see any of the "naughty" appendages. Pornstar avatar theme month goes until August 1st. Which, you can tell by the clock, is very soon.

Unless you live east of me, of course.

Haven't really answered my question, though.

Stick with the GBA version if you want to experience all the neat little extras they've thrown in like being able to use Edward, Palom and Porom, Cid, and Yang in the final battles. The extra dungeon is pretty neat.

If you want to just play the normal game but with Augments (character abilities + new support abilities like HP+50% and stuff), 3D graphics, and improved sound, get the DS version.

Honestly, the GBA version is pretty damn impressive on its own. It lags occasionally but the extras make up for it in spades.

DS version is the best one yet. They reconfigured all bosses, and some skills in the game. It is the best presentation of the storyline so far and of FF4 itself.

If you haven't played more than a few hours, I don't see why starting with the DS version would be a bad idea. The GBA game, while good, has a few bugs in it, and the extras aren't necessarily anything new. Just a new dungeon.

The DS version has some extra back story thrown in, Amano's artwork was translated into 3D pretty competently, some of the boss encounters are rearranged, and there's some decent CGI video.

Got Edge last night and I take back what I said about everyone getting nerfed, Kain is just a lower level than he was in the previous games I noticed after looking at my psx version's file. Edge seems improved all around, glad you don't lose him at all after you get him.

If you had to choose between the GBA and DS versions, I'd definitely go with the DS one.

Reasons to play all versions:

FFIV SNES: Best for the original USA translation. Lines such as "I'll put you out of your misery" as opposed to inferior ones on the PS1 make it a classic... yes, even with more grammar mistakes. Also, this game does not suffer from inventory problems. At the end o the game, your inventory will not be full. In the original japanese one, there are so many items that I don't even personally use most of them.

FFIV SFC: The original japanese one for its challenge.

FFIV PSX: Same -- challenge. Too bad its slower and has worse sound though.

FFIV Wonderswan Color: Pointless to play.

FFIV SFC Easy type: Orange-colored Zeromus! Play this one to fight this different-looking Zeromus.

FFIV GBA: Having every member at the end so you can get their good weapons. Also, the Lunar ruins. Orange zeromus is here but hes the last boss in the game and hes much harder compared to easy type.

FFIV DS: CGI video, voice acting, revamped graphics, harder bosses with new techniques, augment system, minigames, Whyt the new summon, harder regular battles, better storyline writing than all versions..... etc etc etc

That covers all seven FF4's :)

For anyone thinking about whether to drop their current play through of IV and opt for the DS version, do it simply because of auto-battle. This needs to be a standard in Japanese RPGs. I like that I can do other, more productive things while I do the requisite bullshit grinding for whatever area I'm too stupid to think my way through.

Jarrid

I have not cared much for the auto-battle, really.

The graphics, battle system, voice acting, maps, and much more are just so much better than the previous versions. I do enjoy the other Final Fantasy IV games, but pretty much playing them all (except for maybe a couple), I really feel like this is the best out of them all. Honestly, Abom. I would play the DS version just because the difficulty is harder than the GBA version, too.

Unless you are an 'easy' kind of guy. ;)

We obviously need FFIV-2.

Alright, you people stop it, please don't bankrupt me. Now I feel like I need to go buy a DS just for this game. Oh well, my birthday is coming up, anyone want to give me a nice present;)

This game is kicking my ass. Every time I advance in the story I keep forgetting this game is harder than the previous one I played, which was for the GBA, so I am like, "Oh, I know how to handle this one!" Yeah. . . restart.

Well, thanks go out to you people I guess. I decided what to get myself for my B'day and what to have gotten for me. I now have a DS and FFIV. It is so much harder than I remember the ps1 NA release being, but I am loving the storyline all over again.

Oh, that is really awesome, Blue. I am going to have to light a fire under my feat and get running through the game.

Hah, I am on the mountain to become a Paladin, and I was not expecting Scarmiglione Zombie to be so hard. Ugh, one hit kills for everyone except Cecil, but he is of no use since the main attack causes dark on him. I am stuck. I know I need to level a lot more.
