Excluding Brawl, given that there is already an edification of Smash on this board, who out there gets their jollies from fighting games?
I just picked up Soul Calibur 4, which adds to my tidy list of fighting games for my 360 (DoA4, VF5), and I'm really digging it. Despite a dearth of Single Player options (nothing will ever touch the campaign mode from Soul Calibur 2), the Character Creation and online really has me stoked.
Anyone else?

I love Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and definitely Soul Calibur. Most of the time I play fighting games at the arcade by my house. I've got some awesome fighting games for the SNES and PS2, though.

Aside from Brawl, the last fighting game I purcahsed was Soul Calibur 2. I used to be fairly big into fighting games when I was a lot younger, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and the rest. Just doesn't tickle my fancy like it used to. I am however a very competitive person, so I'm betting that if I just had some people to play with I would get into it again in a hurry.

I just bought Arcana Heart and will be trying out its madness in a bit. Latest purchases were Guilty Gear XX Accent Core and King of Fighters IX. When I get my ps3 I'll buy it with my copy of Soul Calibur IV.

Most fighters after Street Fighter 2 haven't appealed to me. I like simplistic, yet deep, controls.

Dont you mean Street Fighter 3, thats more "simplistic yet deep controls" than SF2.

You should. Purist say its the best SF yet. I am more of an Alpha man, also because I hate that new main character, the final cheap ass boss and Ken's apprentice, Sean.

Gill.
I'm interested to see more of Street Fighter IV. I've seen some videos of it and stuff and it seems like it could be really good. I haven't really bought any fighters since Alpha 3 and 3rd Strike for the DC. I'm a fan of Street fighter but I've never been good at them.
Another series I like is VF. Just so deep and rewarding if you dedicate your time to it. I've yet to get VF 5 though, it's the only one I haven't played. Seems pretty good.
Virtua On is another one I use to enjoy a lot. I don't know if many people like them or even played them but I always found them to be fun and a little bit of a refreshing change to the regular fighter format.
Haven't liked MK since MK II, but I haven't really played too many of them since then either.

I'm praying that they'll make a Marvel vs. Capcom 3.... >_>
Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike are easily the best games in the SF franchise. SF4, though it looks cool, to me it seems a bit more clumsy (?) than a SF game should be. I'll no doubt buy it, I'm just hoping it'll be better than what the videos lead me to believe.
I've never been a fan of VF. Yeah it has arguably the best fighting engine out there, but to me the roster of characters just have no appeal or interest to me.

Damn right, that and Rival Schools 3.
I also dont like Virtua Fighter at all. I could never get into it. I remember playing it on my Dreamcast and thinking, wow, Soul Calibur is like 10 times better than this shit.
The last fighter I got was Soul Calibur 2, which I still play quite often. I no longer own it, but Bloody Roar: Primal Fury was also a favorite.

Eh, purists are more likely to criticize Third Strike for being shallow and boring. I don't mind the game but I think Super Street Fighter II Turbo is the height of the series myself.

There is a lot of truth in that. The characters of VF are really nothing special, design and story wise. But honestly, who plays a fighting game for the story?
As for SF III being shallow, it's because it's usually played in a very defensive style. Turtling and parry's are considered to ruin the flow of what a fighting game should be about, attacking. Most argue that it's too easy to wait around for an opponent to strike and then just counter back.

I get to choose between generic karate guy, generic wrestler guy, and generic ninja guy? WOO!
I've always loved the parrying system of 3rd Strike, as it pretty much rendered chip damaging fireball whores obsolete.

I play a lot of fighting games, but I'm a competitive gamer, and I don't like playing a PvP game unless I'm playing to win. So, to that effect, I play only Soul Calibur, Smash Bros., and Virtua Fighter seriously. And, I'm seriously considering dropping Soul Calibur.
The main reason is, I'm slowly growing to despite Soul Calibur 4. The game seems far too aggressive-based, which takes away what I liked about the series in the first place: unlike most fighters, it was more about positioning and strategy as opposed to just outright offense and combo tally. I'm a defensive player, so I don't usually attack unless I'm at least 70% sure I've got the advantage. The new Critical Finisher system, however, just punishes players like me for that.

If a defensive player knew how to use a fast attacker like Maxi or Taki, there was nary a thing that an offensive player who preferred slower characters could do about it; you'd block an attack and your hits would come out faster afterwards. This keeps that strategy from coming to fruition. Have you tried Training to up your Just Impact abilities?
As far as characters go, I'm all over the usuals (Siegfried, Nightmare, Taki) and I reaaaalllly dig The Apprentice. They seemed to have toned down the fluidity of Ivy, which is a shame because she was easily my favorite SC2 character.
Poofy
08-04-2008, 03:41 PM
I noticed that as well. In SCII, I was capable of chaining any of Ivy's attacks together, no matter what stance or position, into some wicked sick combos. Now, it's like after I land 4 or 5 hits, everything comes to an abrupt stop and then I have to repeat the same combo(s).
Nightmare with the fully upgraded Soul Edge is a monster, and is usually my top pick.

The whole "Street Fighter III is shallow" thing isn't because I'm running off of some misguided notion that fighting games should only be about offense. No, it's because the game simply offers less viable options than Street Fighter II. I'm sure you can probably guess why - parrying.
Parrying is just too strong and, at high level play, provides extremely high reward for very little risk. With option select (Inputing multiple commands and allowing the game to automatically choose the best one for you) you can cover a variety of situations at once, allowing you to anticipate both, say, a low attack and a throw or a high attack and a throw. Not only that, but with those same commands inputted you'll automatically counter attack, and, if the opponent opts to do nothing, throw them.
Parrying pretty much just negates a large portion of the game, degenerating it into a big poke and mix-up fest (With said mix ups having only a few really good options to choose from) at high level play. In Street Fighter II, which features no parrying, these kind of fifty-fifty mix-ups still exist. It's just that not every character does them well, and there's a game outside of that. So in the end parrying adds nothing to the game, it just makes a lot of stuff shitty, effectively removing options.
Edit: For those wondering, there's a name for this technique in SF3. It's called "SGGK" which, as far as I know, literally stands for Super Great Goal Keeper. Seriously.

From what I've heard of console SC3, at least now you're not being penalized for guard impacting, right? :D

Meh. Maxi and Taki weren't all that fearsome in Soul Calibur 2. It was Ivy and Xianghua who dominated. And, it was extremely risky being defensive in that game--especially against Xianghua, who could perform mix-ups and fakeouts like none other. That being said, most SC afficionados seem to believe SC2 was the best of the series, balance-wise.
My Impacting skills have improved, but not because of Training. I'm more of a "learn from experience" kind of guy, so I've been learning how and when to apply Impacts on the fly.

SC2 naturally is the best balance wise when compared to SC, Soul Edge, and SC3. It's too early to make a call on 4, since the real skew can't be examined for a few months.
I'd also throw in Mitsurughi into the list of characters that were balls to the wall awesome in SC2.

Yoda can't be hit by a lot of high attacks nor can he be thrown far, but he does little damage and takes a punch like a little girl. This is also ignoring his complete lack of range.

Besides, Smash, I play Soul Calibur. I loved 2 (and was quite happy with having Link as the guest star), and 3 was pretty fun as well. It introduced one of my new favorites, Setsuka. Gotta love that quickdraw style. I played a little of 4 and found they changed some stuff up, put I pretty much use Seigfried, Maxi, Setsuka, Ivy, Kilik, and Nightmare (Wow, six mains again, this is a trend). I suck at all other fighters, was never good at Mortal Kombat, Streetfighter gets old quick, and I got raped at the Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 machine. Never really tried Virtual Fighter, Tekken, and DOA's ridiculously unbalanced counter system is a turn off to me.
To anyone who ever sees it in a bargain bin. I retain that Flying Dragons for the N64 is my favorite fighting game of all time. Particularly the SD mode. If you see it, buy it. Won't be disappointed.
But then I just know I'm the only one who even knows what I'm talking about. Garn.

Ew, I've never been a big fan of the KI series. Just seems to overrated. I do wonder if it will ever resurface though. Who owns the rights to it? Rare or Nintendo? I suppose it's Nintendo . If Rare did I'm sure that Microsoft would have liked to bring the series to the Xbox.

It was the first fighter I'd ever played that allowed me to make my own moveset with my created character. That won a space in my heart by default.
In fact I don't know of any other fighters that allow you to make your own movesets. They really should do that more often.
Fighter Maker! Like RPG Maker, but with a fighting game, naturally. A buddy of mine had it and I watched him play it a bit. Well, more just fiddle with shit moreso than actually play it.
He spent all that time making his fighters and stuff and then he had a homemade fighting game that I don't think anyone actually ever played. Haha.

I play Soul Calibur 4.. and I could even do Brawl. Hit me up in the irc sometime if you want to play. I'm usually bored. :p
I have a lot of faith in my ability in Brawl.. too bad I missed the tournaments here.. but.. I probably would have placed pretty high in it.. if not the victor :o. Though.. I haven't touched brawl in months now.. for months since it came out I was commuting to random places to do tournaments.. and winning some before I stopped. But.. I ended up not really having a way to get around with the crew I was doing it with.
So.. I'd say I was decent.. but it's been awhile. Online seems laggy and crappy though.. but you guys could give me a shot if you want. Like I said.. hit me up on irc sometime.
Will do, if I can get chat working.
