So here is a thread dedicated to possibly the oldest Video game (game company) in the world.
How do you feel about Nintendo past and present? I know that a large number of people are pleased with Nintendo's current situation and others are not.
I've got a lot of fond memories with Nintendo consoles myself. I have almost every handheld and console they have ever made. Been impressed, disappointed and in between with everything Nintendo has done in the past.
I don't know for sure but I think the NES was probably my favorite console that Nintendo made. SNES is right up there though too. N64 is my least favorite by far and the GC and Wii sit somewhere in between. Always liked the GB line and the DS is fantastic as well.
A lot of people don't like the direction that Nintendo is taking with the Wii and using it to tap into a much larger market the ever before. It's a good thing in a lot of ways, but I can see it not being great in other ways too. Overall, Nintendo is doing the right thing and is always seemingly trying to do better.

I'm on the side of those who disagree with Nintendo's latest cash ploy. Wii Sports Resort with included Wii Motion Plus Sensor? Holy Hell, the majority of game developers for Wii haven't even mastered the programing required for the Wiimote's basic motion sensor capabilities, and Nintendo decides to make it even more sophisticated just so we can play Frisbee with a dog? ****ing Christ. Lets not get into the fact that Nintendo flaunts their name like they're some kind of authority on quality control, yet no other console in this generation has as much Shovelware as they do.
I actually love Nintendo, some of my favorite games are on the Wii (Boom Blox and Blast Works are the epitome of simplistic fun), but I think they're getting a little too big for their britches. You'd think after the failure (And I use that term lightly) of the GameCube, Nintendo would be a little more humble and modest, but I guess vast revenue comes with a side effect of amnesia.
I just think that Nintendo would be better off if they slowed down and took a step back to look at what they have so they can fine-tune it, rather than speeding recklessly forward in the name of profit.

I have played the Wii for about a grand total of five minutes. I really cannot say much about it because of my lack of experience with the console. However, I really have not seen too many games that I like for it. Are the classic games that are available expensive? I was reading what Jarvolt said about not being able to re-download something if the Wii messes up and erases everything or if you have to buy a new console. Not a huge fan of that idea, but oh well. I cannot decide if I want to buy a Wii or just start putting back some money for a PS3.
I love my Nintendo DS, though. It is the only thing that keeps me playing video games. <3

I love Nintendo, still do, and I admit that a lot of that is due to nostalgia and that their three main franchises, Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, never fail to deliver solid gameplay for me. Some of my fondest memories are of me playing my NES in front of my old console TV when I was a young lad, and then my SNES when I was an adolescent.
A lot of us have grown up with those franchises and seen them change and morph over the years, but the fan base has continued to thrive.
I'm not blind to their mistakes, however, as they have made quite a few. Innovation doesn't happen overnight, in a lot of cases, and I think the Wii is a step towards getting devs to think outside the box in terms of how gaming can be improved and evolved. I don't think it's the "revolution" that it was originally made out to be, and the fact that third party devs see fit to just keep releasing trash on it hurts it so much. Yet, it's different. Some may argue that it's different in a bad way and some may argue that it's different in a good way. I'm sort of in the middle of that.
I agree. It seems that unfortunately a ton of publishers/developers are just looking to cash in as quickly as possible because the Wii has been selling incredibly well. We also have to remember that a very large number of Wii owners aren't very familiar with gaming in general. They see a game with a nice cover and has fancy quotes and screen shots on the back of the box and they decide to pick it up. Parents buying games for their kids and such. Without totally generalizing, but someone is buying this shovelware other wise it wouldn't be coming out in droves.
The Wii has a nice handful of games worth owning and it will slowly grow over time. As of right now, the console might have been selling better then the GC but that shouldn't be used as the gage of how great or poor the Wii is.
Revolution doesn't always come over night...sometimes all it needs is a small spark and I think the Wii and the DS are making people think in different ways, and that can only be good for the industry in the long term. As of right now, in the short term, people are milking it for a quick buck, but I think that after some time, someone will have the passion to improve on the Wii because the Wii opened their eyes to new ideas.
The DS has some pretty crap games, but because of the much lower development costs and risks involved, there are also a very large number of fantastic games for it. The Wii not so much, but hopefully it will improve in the future.
As you said Blue, this is a good step forward and hopefully the next generations will improve on these concepts and perfect them.
I'm on a middle ground with the Wii. It's not what I hoped it would be, but it's still good. And I say good, in the way that I mean I probably won't buy one any time soon.
As for the Nintendo DS, I think it's the best thing in the gaming market. More DS games appeal to me, than anything out there.
As for Nintendo, past... the only console I was really displeased with was N64. NES, SNES, and GameCube, I have always liked.

You preferred the GC over the N64... Could you elaborate on the reasons? I'm just curious.

Not to speak up for Void, but the GC had a much better line up of games overall, and it even has 3rd party titles worth buying unlike the crap that was on the N64. I've worked for a game store and the number of N64 stock piled are ridiculous. They were even using one as a door stop because they had so many.

Which is why at the time, I am so glad I had a PlayStation instead of a Nintendo 64 when I was younger. Eventually, I was received a Nintendo 64 as a gift (maybe it was my little brother), however, I have no clue where the console, games, and controllers are at. Not really that worried about it either. If my PlayStation games went missing, oh shit, I would probably go insane looking for them.

I love Nintendo, and i love especially the Wii my favourite game is Super Smah Brawl my brother beats me but im good at it i think my favourite character is Mr. Game & Watch

N64 was okay... it just didn't have enough games to interest me. In my time, I've owned maybe 20 games for the N64, which is by far, the least amount I have owned for any console I've bought. When I finally cracked and bought a PSX, it didn't take me long to outdo my N64 collection. Also, this may sound like a small reason, but it's always annoyed me that the N64 controller was designed by a complete jackass. Thanks a lot pal for making me waste money on replacement controllers that aren't even enjoyable. *thumbs up to Nintendo*
As for GameCube, I feel that it had more enjoyable games, and the sequels to games that were on the N64 were better than the originals. For example, I like The Thousand Year Door better than Paper Mario, and the GC Zeldas better than the N64 Zeldas. I also liked that it had more RPGs, and mature titles. Not to mention a few remakes that I enjoyed completely more than the originals, which were great as well (MGS and REmake.)
For some reason though, I didn't enjoy Melee as much as I did the original SSB. It's like it lost something important.

Controllers are a huge reason to like/dislike a console to any degree, seeing as they're an interegal part to any systems experience. :p
I never owned a N64 or a GC, but thanks to the Wii's backwards compatibility, I'm catching up on both. As of right now, I regard the 2 systems at about the same level. Next to the Wii, the SNES has been my last authentic Nintendo experience...
... Handhelds excluded.

SNES was my favorite because the programming of the games didn't make it insanely difficult like NES platform / side-scrolling games were. It had the best FF games, Mario-related games and games on its own.
The NES is legendary.
The n64 is also my least favorite. They picked the wrong format for the wrong time and they lost FF because of it. Only first party games are any good on this system.
The Wii and GC are also in between for me. So far I like the GC more because so much has come out for it -- especially fun multiplayer games to play with friends. The Wii is getting there. It's like a gamecube with a motion controller, really.
Growing up, I never liked the GB because I got a Game Gear and it was full color with very high sound. Then The GBC came out and I grew to like Nintendo handhelds more. Once the GBA did I was a huge fan because its almost like a portable SNES. The DS is starting to become just as good as the GBA, too.
Starting with the n64, I started to dislike the angle that Nintendo went. Nintendo used to have all types of games on their consoles (See: SNES). They decided to make games for younger audiences and not really invite games from our most important genre: RPG. Their handhelds did but their consoles did not. It is too bad.
To this day Nintendo hasn't changed since the n64. But I will always love it for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc, etc.

In my opinion no other company has ever had such a solid fun factor in games as Nintendo.
It's my absolute favorite gaming company, and now I think it's safe to say that I have given up on any other gaming company in terms of platforms. I only buy games for my DS and for the wii( not anymore for the wii right now). I think Nintendo games can offer a lot. What I also like about Nintendo is that it's multi player friendly, and because the games are just so easy to get into and accessible i can ensure that at least 10% of my acquaintances own games that we can play in a group.
But I suppose most Nintendo games are more for casual gamers rather than people who take gaming seriously.

Wait is this because of the RPG quantity? I think it's quite possible to argue that there are a number of RPGs on the DS and they probably rival the amount that the GBA had. Plus the future is really bright on that horizon.
It's a tough argument because I love the GBA, a lot. But the DS has that X factor that pushes it slightly past the GBA. In general, I think the DS has really sparked a large interest in handheld gaming that had faded away for a while.

I've always loved Nintendo, but I don't think I give them the credit they deserve. The Mario Series has really brought me, along with many(many) others, into the gaming world we live in today. I hope Nintendo lives on forever.
The n64 is also my least favorite. They picked the wrong format for the wrong time and they lost FF because of it. Only first party games are any good on this system.
I'd disagree with that last statement. My evidence: Hybrid Heaven, Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire, Mystical Ninja.
Though, I will admit that the good are much MUCH less than the crapola.
