Free games are often overlooked, but as we all know, there are some good ones out there, and often they are better than your traditional $50+ current-gen game.

One exception here: you can't list games that used to cost money but are now free (old GTAs, Tribes, etc). Can be open source or just freeware.

I'll add descriptions to mine at another time, but here is a tentative list. I may have forgotten a few; I just added Veck and Shotgun Ninja at the end there, even though they're pretty mediocre.

1. Cave Story
2. Knytt
3. Knytt Stories
4. TUMIKI Fighters
5. Within a Deep Forest
6 Plasma Pong
7. Warning Forever
8. n
9. Veck
10. Shotgun Ninja

1. Gunz
2. Gunbound
3. Aegis Wing (Free DLC on 360)

That's about all I can think of when it comes to free games that I didn't download illegally.

Only free game I play even remotely often is the Risk application on Facebook.

I played Maple Story for about six months and pretty much got sick of it because of all the little kids. However, it was fun while it lasted, and the game was free, so no money spent. Though, I did buy Maple Story cash to pimp out my character one time. It was pretty cool until it canceled off my account.

Ragnorok Online was fun as well, and I played it with Hayabusa and Ruzi. I had school going on at the time, so I stopped playing it. Have not bothered with it since.

3. Planetarian
4. Archmage
5. Secrets of Mirage

The rest aren't worth even mentioning. :/

I considered the computer game "Battle For Wesnoth" to be a good free down loadable game, it took a while to finish, it was easily editable, the download came with a free campaign editor, and, all you need is a Windows OS and a certain amount of disc space to install it too.

Really, you're going to laugh, but Neopets has long entertained me when I should have been studying for something important. Lots of free arcadey type games.

And Runescape. Shup.

On the browser-based MMO side of things, Kingdom of Loathing was pretty cool. I liked NexusWar, too, but it got dull after the developer started regulating things just to keep my guild down, and the subsequent gangbanging we suffered from guilds abusing the anti-cheating mechanics to zerg rush us.
