View Full Version : The Revenge of the Nerds

I suspect all of us here at AllRPG have a few, if not plenty, nerdy attributes. Just go ahead and ramble about your nerdy ways, please.
I am really into astronomy, chess, poetry(emo?)^_^, and SiFi flicks. There's a good balance in my life of the nerdy and the sophisticated/"cool". Then again, according to me, the more "nerd" you have in you, the cooler you really are.
Tell us what the fuck is up with your nerdy ways.

I read a LOT, including fantasy novels.
I've played D&D quite a bit, but not in years. Group fell apart.
I play video games, and raise my kids to do the same.
I post on video game related message boards.
I just got a game related tattoo.
I watch both Star Wars and Star Trek.
I love learning. I'd stay in school forever if I could.
Considering I'm also female, quite a few of those push me way down into the nerd category. Who cares? Not me, I'm proud of my geek traits.
Also, welcome back, Atlas! :)

I can spend an entire day online just looking at crap on the internet, be them movie trivia or stuff on snopes. Instead of normally schedulling trips to the beach or whatever, I structure my days off to be spent all day in my house, browsing crap online.

Oh geekery, let me count the ways.
-In elementary school, I was in Young Astronauts and went to Space Camp. But I didn't want to be an astronaut. Oh no. I wanted to be on ground control with the intense music and the proliferation of cigarette smoke.
-I was the chess MASTER in middle school chess club and kept it up once I got to high school in the gaming club (where I also played a shitton of Risk and got introduced to Munchkin).
-I played D&D in college until another girl joined the group, then I lost interest. :P But for the time I played, I was a gnome called Murfoodle Ollywocket. :D
-I don't really play video games but I play a whole hell of a lot of the Sims 2.... we didn't have anything besides Gameboy until I was 16 and then the PS2 was in the dark lair some like to call my brother's room.
My biggest nerdy thing is that I'm such a politics fangirl. People have told my best friend and I that they'd never met anyone like us before. :P I saw almost everyone running in the primaries speak (except for the idiots like Tancredo who I would have been forced to strangle with my bare hands), I've met all the Massachusetts senators and representatives, I'm on a first name basis with my local rep (John Linder... the "Fair"Tax guy), and I've volunteered for more campaigns than I can count. It's amusing, really. My dad has always been really political but I think I've taken it to a whole new level. I think in the last 2 years, I've spent nearly $1000 traveling up and down the Northeast Corridor for political events or volunteering.
Let's see...
-I USED to play D&D until I realized I'm a 26 year old man with too much to do to spend time fooling around with it much
-My Camera is worth more than my car is, and I'm okay with that.
-I read medical texts and journals and case studies like other people read the Sunday Comics
-I love the renaissance faire and would live there year round if they would let me and install internet access
-I attend the Faire in full garb, from the top of my tricorn to the tips of my black leather knee-length boots
-I love Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Firefly, Dune, and EVERY BAD HORROR MOVIE EVER MADE....
-I own every episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000
-I work here
More if I think of more later...

1. I work for HP as field engineer, working on pretty much anything HP makes.
2. I love astronomy.
3. I really get into any type of trivia.
4. I also like science and history.
6. I like SciFi/Fantasy books and movies.
7. Video games, of course.
8. There are a few anime that I like as well as some old cartoons I grew up on.
That all I can think of right now. Everything else the rest of the world might consider "cool.'

-I've been coming here for like, 6 years now.
-I play D&D
-Last week I went to a card shop and played the Pokemon TCG. Yes, I still have my deck.
-I spend way too much time on the internet, and have made some of my closest friends there
-I read comic books. Lots of them.
-I was a band-geek
-I'm a fan of numerous major science fiction series
-Like Hyde, I'm a massive fan of old, terrible horror/exploitation films.
There's more, but like... I don't feel like listing them right now.
1. I work for HP as field engineer, working on pretty much anything HP makes.
Dude, I'm planning on buying an HP laptop for school, but I'd like to keep it under $1000 (including warranties and all that), can you give me a quick recommendation?

I deal mostly with business class laptops and I wouldn't recommend any of those. At least not the 6200/6400 series as it seems I have to replace a mother board in one of those every other damn day.
I have a friend that deals more with the consumer level laptops, let me ask him what his thoughts are.

My HP 5000 needs a new motherboard, but it's just not worth it. *sigh* I know a lot of people who have had problems with the power jack on their HP laptops, including myself. PITA.
But you can get a decent one for relatively cheap.

I guess it's also pretty nerdy that I'm triple majoring and double minoring. And that I could have graduated from college a year early if I wasn't spending the year abroad. Yeah. :P

I'd sell you my Toshiba. It's been a great laptop, just need a new battery. However, I would rather be beaten with hot pokers than carry it around all day. The damn thing is huge.

It's probably also worth mentioning that I was in competitive speech and drama all through high school, where I competed successfully at the state and national level in Oral Interpretation Of Prose, Solo Serious Acting, Oral Interpretation of Poetry, Improvised Duet Acting, and Extemporaneous Speaking.
...It's also worth mentioning that I like to brag about my nerdy high school achievements =p

I used to think PowWow was the s*** when it came out like 12 years ago and the microphone would make your voice sound like a robot many, many light years away, I've been known to play World of Warcraft but I prefer just following people around to heal them, and the clincher, I know all the words from the theme song to Full House. lolol 'Nuf said :)

-I find myself watching anime randomly some times for no reason.
-I play Pokemon... even though I don't consider that any more geeky than playing any other RPG but okay.
-I have a few things I collected from my past in my wardrobe like MtG cards and such.
-I come here a lot.
-I like to read a lot(even though I just can't get into sci-fi, mystery and horror only)
-I can obsess about things pretty easily.

Is being obsessive a nerdy quality? That could explain a few things.

Wasn't a huge fan of Barbie Dress-Up Goes to Spira. Of all the FF's to get a sequel, it should have been 6 or 7. Not 10. The story of the sequel...well....it just kinda sucked, and it's the only reason I play games: For the Narrative. I didn't buy Luna "Lara" Croft, and the entire game, to me, just didn't cut it.
I returned it after like 2 days because I just couldn't take it anymore and since then have refused to even acknowledge it in the lineage of Final Fantasy.
But that's me.

Oh darlings, I assure you that I know more about Harry Potter than both of you. ;)
And I've seen Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys 5 times and have seen The Whomping Willows, The Ministry of Magic, the Moaning Myrtles, and Tonks & the Aurors each once.
And I used to run a Harry Potter RPG site. ;)
And I was at the biggest HP7 book release outside of London. The best too, I must say.

I did, and I enjoyed them. I'm just making a jab.
Though to be fair, while they didn't end as children's books, the epilogue read like a piece of bad fanfiction.

She catered to the fans with it. That's okay, though. Sometimes it isn't so bad and that wasn't THAT terrible...
...it's not like the Epilogue had Harry end up in bed with Draco. THAT'D be going too far with the pandering.

Harry Potter can lick my balls with his watered-down fantasy-wannabe tongue.
Have you had a chance to look into Code Geass or any other animes?
And ummmmm Elaborate on that last part if you will XD
Never heard of Code Geass. I've watched some of Cowboy Bebop and the movie, a lot of Dragonball Z (I was young), and way too much Sailor Moon (I was VERY young). I don't give anime much of a chance when I try watching one. Champloo was just amazing.
I write on a fantasy play-by-post forum and used to moderate there for a long time, approving characters and other stuff. I also play too many video games, go to conventions and will dress up for Halloween as Shadow from FF6. Ha.
I once had a LOTR party where we watched all three of the movies, uncut, with no breaks and no unnecessary talking....
