View Full Version : What game series deserves a second chance?

In light of reading that Beyond Good and Evil getting a sequel (and being quite loved by the people who have played it), what other games deserve to have a second crack at glory?

I'm kind of indifferent, but Skies of Arcadia feels like gold that Sega forgot to cash in on. On one hand I'm glad that they didn't decide to milk it for all it is worth but on the other, I could always use more Skies in my life. Either this or a new Phantasy Star game (a true Phantasy Star game)

Shenmue is another that instantly comes to my mind. It seems that Yakuza has sort of become the spiritual successor to the series and that Shenmue is all but long gone and dead so sad to see.

Panzer Dragoon either in the form of PD Saga or just as another on rails shooter. It's such a shame that one of the most visually appealing and interesting worlds ever to be created for a console has fizzled out because of poor sales. Panzer Dragoon has always been one of the most consistantly good series' that Sega has ever produced but never caught the attention of the masses.

Sky Gunner was one of the coolest and most beautiful cartoon style games on the PS2. Unfortunately it also sold quite poorly and never became popular. I can only imagine what this game could look like on the PS3 with those firework style missles and flashes on screen. Plus if they can cut out all that lag that the game had, it would be so much sweeter.

River City Ransom okay so the game has a remake on the GBA, which is quite good, but it would be awesome to see a totally brand new RCR game released on the PSP or DS. If they can make a new Dodgeball game for the DS, why not a new RCR? Just take back those character sprites, put them into new backdrops and areas of River City with a variety of weapons and Volia, new game.

lastly, Rez wouldn't it be nice to get some new beats and stages for this fantastic shooter? Rez has been fortunate enough to have been released on the DC, PS2 and most recently on Xbox live, but never got enough chance to see another new game released. The director has moved onto Q3 entertainment and will not likely come back to Sega to work on the property but the groundwork has already been laid and there is potential to get more out of it.

looking back at this...sorry for all the Sega love, but if they actually got their crap together they could really get back into the gaming world with full steam.

What are your choices?

Blast Corps. Easily one of the most entertaining games I have ever played. Even losing is awesome as the truck with the "nucular" device explodes. Sometimes I would just grab one of the robots and flip out until I eventually came crashing into the red truck and failing. Did the same thing with the other trucks.

Jet Grind Radio. Funnest. Game. Ever. Seriously, this game rocked hard. They did a new one, Future for the xbox but that its, we should be getting these on a constant basis.

I?ll try to think of more.

Strider

This game was already given a second chance, but that second chance was fun as hell. I don't see why they don't give the series another try in the vein of Strider 2 on WiiWare or Live Arcade or something. I know I'd buy it.

Or they can just jump up and make Strider 3, but after the poor sales it won't happen. I guess they made 2 because of his popularity in the VS. series and Capcom must have thought that they could capitalize on that. A shame, both Strider games are really good.

Shit yes, Parasite Eve all the way. I didnt get to play the second one much. I was in high school and got it from this friend who asked for it back like a week after he lent it to me. That asshole.

But yeah, they should totally keep it going.

Actually, didnt Squenix said they were developing a new PE game? It was for some gay shit like a mobilegame, but I had read something about that.

Also, how the **** have we forgotten about the Chrono games?

We've probably forgotten about Chrono because of either of these 2 reasons.

A) Cross was a big disappointment for most fans (not everyone but a large majority)

B) There has be no mention of the series at all aside from Chrono Break which doesn't exist any more. Despite merging and getting our hopes up, Enix and Square don't seem to have most of the original CT team working for them. Probably don't have the CC team at all either.

Blue, there have been rumblings about a new Kid Icarus for a while now. Mostly because of Pit being included for SSBB. Perhaps E3 will bring about the actual announcement of the game in the near future.

Yeah, I hope, because I think it'd be nice to have something other than the big three to look forward to out of Nintendo for once, not that there's anything wrong with the big three, of course.

Sure there is, the fact that they took away the chance for every day gamers to get into the show and play the games at the booths. That totally sucks. :P
That and they stole all of Phak's Booth Babes away from him.

I forgot but I just remembered seeing that tech demo for Duck Hunt. I would love to see Duck Hunt return on the Wii and not just as that small part of Wii Play. It's just so classic that it deserves to be repackaged for the Wii. Even if they sold it in the Wii Ware game set, it would probably sell alright.

I've never understood why we haven't had more Chrono games. Games that are far lesser hits have gotten much more sequels. I know that a lot of people didn't like CC as a sequel because of what it did to the CT story, but it still sold very well I think, and it does have it's fair share of fans.

But I agree with Blue, I've just about quit hoping for a sequel, because it just doesn't seem to be going to happen.

Actually Booth Babes were kinda lame sometimes. They should have drugged them and kept them hyper. You never got a bigger impression than models like them really hate those types of gigs as you did when you stared at those lifeless eyes, wishing for a life of glamour and fame and yet doomed to appear dressed as Bloodrayne or with a big fat Plastation 3 logo on their tight shirts while being perved by countless nerds.

Yeah, Strider 2 was designed as an arcade game and that kind of showed when no one bought it but me for PlayStation. On the other hand, the market is a lot different now than it was nearly a decade ago. I think the franchise has a much better chance to succeed if it starts with some downloadable games to get the character back into people's minds, preferably ones that capture the feel of Strider 2. I suppose they could later go 3D but then Capcom would be competing against its own DMC series, so they'd have to find something new to do with it compared to other 3D action games. I say put the focus on the platforming and speed we saw in Strider 2.

Strider 2 was amaaaazing. I had almost forgotten about it. Definitely deserves another sequel.

Also, Klonoa, Gex, Vectorman, Rollcage, Jumping Flash, Powerstone, Devil Dice/Bombastic, Space Harrier (Planet Harriers port/remake pls).

Well, I actually bought Strider 2 as well so there at least 2 of us in the world. :)

I suppose if Strider and Strider 2 were released at downloadable games then there could be a market for a return. Actually isn't Strider on the VC already? Perhaps the series could go the route of most of the current gen Capcom games, like Bionic Commando, 1943 and Street Fighter II which have all been seeing remakes/remixes start to appear as inexpensive downloads. I know I would be interested in seeing it make a come back even in that form at the least.

Jar: The were working on that Vectorman game for PS2 before it got scrapped because it was supposedly that terrible. Vectorman could really work well in the 3D world and should get another shot.

As for Space Harrier...Hmm, it could work if they put it into a 2.5D perspective and had interactive backgrounds and such. Kind of like how the Contra series has changed recently. Nothing wrong with a little "Get Ready!"

Oh The Adventures of Bayou Billy Needs a remake. Such a great game that most people seemingly choose to forget about. Probably because the main theme song was used for so many stages.

Some of these have been some good suggestion, though I'm going to add some things to the list I'd like to see have another go-round.

Gundam fighters: As far as I'm concerned, the only good one was Endless Duel on the SNES. The ones on the PS2 were failures from how I see it. They hardly included the more poular series (Gundam Wing, G Gundam, 08thMS Team).

When I think of some more I'll add them later.

Weren't there some PSX ones, too? Like, what was it, Battle Assault?

Yeah, something along the lines of a remix or enhanced remake or something like that is what I'm thinking.

They were garbage, so they need to be redone. The latest Gundam game that was decent was Dynasty Warriors Gundam.

There was a Gundam arcade game? I just recall Endless Duel, the Battle Assaults, the Gundum series X Vs. Gundam series Y (Never the good ones) games, and Dynasty Gundam.

There are some pretty hard core arcade machines in Japan that I saw. They were full walk in cabinets that were soundproof so that you were the only one to hear it. They were all linked together and the screen inside of it made it feel just like you were actually inside a real Gundam. Can't think of the name of that game but it was pretty amazing. If I can track down the pics I took of it I can possibly post them up on here.

There is also that Zeon based shooter. Not sure what time period and who the 2 main characters were for the game but you had the giant machine gun and you could hide behind corners and pop out to shoot at Gundam pilots.

Definitely the Chrono Series. I don't even get how they haven't continued the series thus far, knowing how much Square Enix likes to milk most of their franchises to death. A new Chrono game is like money in the bank. They know we'd all go apeshit for it.

Agreed. Those bastards need to realize the gold mine that is the Chrono Series and start going after it.

the Gundum series X Vs. Gundam series Y (Never the good ones) games

These, in Japan they're set up like Sushi said. They're not really fighting games per se, but one of the Japanese-only releases I tried with a friend was fun as hell for an arcade game. I'll have to check what it was. It might be Federation vs Zaft 2 Plus Alpha CE or some bullshit like that.

I remember that. I also remember it not in the slightest resembling the original games, so I push it out of my memory. I just want something legitimate that would bring back the series. A new 2D game, even. For the DS and/or PSP.

It would be nice to see Vectorman come back in that fashion but I still could see him moving into 3D comfortably. It would be neat to see him running around on skates in an over the shoulder style camera with lock-on. They could still use the tank style stages as well and make it with a wide screen view for fighting. I could really see him working well with the right development team creating the game.
