Why?
Faceless women, alien tadpole costume, stunts and dancing in heels (any woman, even the ones *used* to wearing platform heels cringe when they see people leaping, dancing, or running in heels), Gaga getting thrown down a fiery chute, freaky dirty arm piano.
Gaga if anything, is avant garde. If you don't think this performance is thematically frightening/jarring, then it wasn't anything at all.

You don't go that far off the deep end stylistically without attempting to stir up emotional reactions in your audience--otherwise it's just... a bunch of random shit.

You know that's funny, I was just watching her and Elton John duet that at the Grammy's on youtube like 2 minutes ago. Was amazing. Nice to know I'm not the only guy who likes Lady GaGa
She's one of those people who brings cult elements to the mainstream so by default she becomes someone who people hate to hate or hate to love. In my opinion she's the most influential pop star since Madonna, and a breath of fresh air. Let's just hope she stays this way for a long time.

I agree she's all about the performance.
However, I think maybe I see it differently because of the kind of stuff I'm exposed to all the time. I go to local art and art performance shows and watch people get pierced through their back and have peacock feathers inserted.
In fact, the way she's avant garde is exactly what I like about her. It's why "Bad Romance" is one of the best videos I've ever seen.

Yeah I actually prefer the Cabaret version but I was glad to hear it in glee. I was watching glee with my friends and I was like "OMG I LOVE THIS SONG" when they started singing it and I started singing along to it. My friends were like "who the fuck sings this?" and I'm like "erm... only the coolest hag in the world! Liza Mi-fucking-nnelli" they were like "who the fuck is that?". Some people just lack culture to the extreme.

Outside of people who are into "scene music" no one has ever heard of any of my favorite bands. I always cringe when I have to tell a random person that I was just at a show, or am planning on going to a show. They always ask who I saw/am seeing, and I always dismissively tell them they've never heard of them, and try to keep the conversation moving along. Then they always seem mildly offended and say "try me", and of course they've never heard of them.
Of course on the off chance they have actually heard of them, I immediately start to hump their leg.
Edit: I never feel compelled to talk to random people about my favorite music, because I have enough friends who are into the same music as I am that we can just prattle on about music all the live long day. Plus it's easy enough to make friends at shows. :3

You've just told the story of my life. Except I listen to a lot of mainstream stuff as well. I used to only listen to independent music for a while, but that compulsiveness made me feel kind of smug. I listen to what I like, and if that means my i-pod has both Visage and Madonna even better. The indie scene is actually quite popular here in London, as ironic as that might sound. Also Because I am in art school I get all these people trying to be "individual"(yet another oxymoron) who know some of the bands I am into. I talk to them about that kind of music but conversations can quickly turn insipid as soon as they shun mainstream music only for the fact that it is mainstream and with no regard to the way the music itself sounds.
However there are some groups that even the arty crowd doesn't know and which I have a great deal of emotional attachment to and given the odd chance that I find someone who has even heard of them I too hump legs like no tomorrow.

Ahh, one thing that bugs me to no end is people who turn their noses up at different genres, music styles, or popularity. If a band is too well produced, they're sell-outs. Heaven forbid bands explore musically, lest they spook their old fans. Blah blah.
Oddly enough with the advent of internet-based music distribution, I find indie music to be vastly more accessible than mainstream music. There are so, so, so many talented musicians and bands out there making every kind of music imaginable. And you can see these bands for free or some ridiculously scant amount of money in a small to medium sized venue with other people who love music too. And you can fucking talk to them. Seriously, get behind it. Support your local music scene.

This is very true. I mean I found some of my favourite bands on myspace and last FM or just stumbleupon.com. Others from film soundtracks, they're always a good source, not for new music, but good music.
There's this small group of people (well about 60 people) which I belong to who go by the name of "clinic" that are based in London. I'm friends with the person in charge, and they're an underground community who organise independent gigs. But they are highly exclusive and elitist, and it annoys me to be around them. They don't want other people to know about the venues and musicians. I generally find the people in it really annoying, but I go to the gigs for the music anyway.

Ack that sounds super hipstery lol. Why does music have to be about being cool and exclusive, anyway. Maybe it's a backwards sort of rationalization on the part of hipsters, that once a band gets big enough to outgrow their scene, they're not cool anymore. :3

Those "clinic" people sound like the biggest kind of retards; they're bringing London down. I've always despised the "keep it underground so it can just be our thing" kind of mentality.
I've never enjoyed hardcore music, though. I dislike most of it for the same reason I dislike the vast majority of metal, only the vocals in hardcore music tends to give me more of a headache.

I honestly couldn't tell you why I like screaming in music. There are other things about hardcore and post-hardcore music that I love.. the driving rhythms, the exciting lyrics, and solid breakdowns. But I tend to prefer post-hardcore music and pop-punk with hardcore influences because to me the screams pack more of a wallop when they're clean and punctuate the music appropriately. But overall I do love screaming vocals. *Especially* in Indie rock.

That said I also can't stand some Indie/ Anti-folk stuff when the lead singer makes a weird voice, just so it can be put under that category... I don't what what example to give... erm ever heard of Born Ruffians?

I agree. I tend to not like bands as much that do nothing but scream. There needs to be singing in there and a build up to the screaming for it to have an impact on me. Thats why I like Underoath so much.
Nowadays I dont listen to heavy music nearly as much as I used to. Im more about mellow stuff with a good beat. Bloc Party would be the most popular example I guess. But I always loved them even back when I listened to almost nothing but heavy music.

This one is dark green and smoky chartreuse. Is it weird that I associate colors with music?
And DK: I actually like both the TOOL and Led Zeppelin versions equally, it just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
