View Full Version : Vanish/Doom and AllRPG: The FINAL MEETING!
So I've been reading a lot of what's been said...."AllRPG should go away, and we should just be Vanish/Doom Forums!" "No! **** VanishDoom! AllRPG and VanishD will never be related!" "AllRPG Forever!" so on and so forth...
So I'm gonna put these rumors to bed now and remind you all of what's up...what's important...and what's coming..
Firstly.....AllRPG.com still belongs to Kris, and now belongs to US now that we've gotten away from Matt "I'm a Selfish Bastard" Spears' abduction of our beloved site. We are in control again. So guess what? AllRPG THE SITE is coming back.......after a fashion.
As I Posted before, AllRPG.com, under my lead, will become a Community Based site. What does that mean? It means it'll have EVERYTHING the old AllRPG had, but it'll be driven by YOU GUYS. YOU ARE ALL STAFF if you want to be....Wanna Review a Game? You go for it. Wanna PREVIEW a game? Do that too! Wanna talk news? Post Editorials? Have a say? You're gonna get to. All the content of the new AllRPG.com will be entirely generated by our users, and people who visit the site. We'll have a small staff to moderate and edit entries and to provide the hierarchy needed to run a site, and that's it. No more drama and internal politics, because the "staff" won't be big enough to have them. I'll be once again asking for volunteers for this in the near future.
The forums? The forums are Serge's domain, under the guidance of Blue and Joe. The three of them, along with me, have discussed what needs doing on several occasions and we've come up with....well....what you see right now...AllRPG 6.0...These Forums are still gonna be AllRPG. Always. As Dylan said before, Vanish/Doom may eventually have their own forums(it really isn't one of our priorities at the moment), but they'll be separate and aimed more at Game News Discussion than anything else. It's not likely to be the same kind of thing we have here....and that's a good thing.
So....what about the mingled future of the two? Well that's simple. My aim, my goal, is to create an online "Alliance" of gaming sites and form it into a large, multi-site community. Vanish/Doom and AllRPG are the charter members, and once the site gets back up, it'll be linked on Vanish/Doom. The Forums will be linked too. And we are hoping...no..>ENCOURAGING< all of you to head over to Vanish/Doom and BE part of the community. Comment on articles, give the podcast feedback, Send Dylan Mail to read on air, all that jazz. Alot of you are already doing so, and that's great....hopefully everyone else will follow suit.
Vanish/Doom has garnered very VERY good traffic in it's now...what...3 month lifespan? We've gone from having a LACK of an Alexa ranking(a system which shows high traffic sites on the net) to being in the top 400,000 worldwide, and we keep climbing every time they release new numbers. AllRPG is never gonna keep up there because we're still a niche site and now a community BASED niche site, but....that's fine. Who needs it to be? If all goes the way it's been going, AllRPG will climb it's way back up and be part of a kick ass Gamer Network.
In the meantime....enjoy the new forums! Post a bunch! Enjoy the new setup and the style(brought to you by yours truly...) and seriously...relax everyone. Breathe. We've come through the crucible and we've lost everything....but we gained something important: Our Freedom. We can now get the site back up, the forums on track, and bring AllRPG back and out of hibernation.
Long Live AllRPG. Long Live Vanish/Doom. Long Live the Digital Gamer Alliance(name pending).

It's an interesting idea letting Allrpg run as a community based site. Would this be something akin to how Wikipedia is run then? I've got no problem with VD myself and I've visted the site a few times, I haven't contributed at all but that could change in the future. It really sounds like we need some people to step up here though and work hard to get this place going because VD is already up and running. Hopefully we will be able to get a good flow of traffic from both and build the type of community that was once thriving here.

Hyde, what about the AllRPGWiki we tried previously? Was it backed up? Will we be having it here else well?

Not...exactly. Users will have to submit their stuff via the site, it'll be reviewed, edited for spelling/grammar etc, and then posted.

That's the plan. I will be accepting Applications in the near future.

The AllRPGWiki was a failed experiment. Everyone was high on it for about 2 weeks, and then it was never touched again. That may be slightly exaggerating, but it's close enough to the truth. However, no....we didn't have it backed up and there was no way to retrieve it.
We won't need a wiki for this.

Sounds pretty good to me! Maybe something to fill the writing void in my life.

Shit! And I wasted so much time on the AllRPG wiki. Oh well. At least we still have AllRPG forum for now.

I put in a fair amount of time as well. I just didn't have the time resources to continue on it every day like I wanted to. I know that Priest did a bunch of work on it as well. Perhaps we can contribute to the new Allrpg main site in some way as well.
I'm hoping lots of people do....I don't care if I get 6 reviews of Chrono Cross and they range from "I hate it" to "I love it" so long as there is a well written article in it. We'll post them.
Fan driven content. For. The. Win.

I'll probably into doing some older game reviews for Saturn and such if there is room for such a thing. I've been around for a while and played a fair share of NES/Genesis/Saturn etc. games that probably aren't as famous any more. I would guess that content like that would be welcomed?

Absolutely. All consoles, all rpg games. There will even be an area for Non-rpg games that we'll take some stuff for too.

Similar to the Elements system that use to be used on the site? I suppose Sports Talk Baseball would be out of the picture while a game like God of War or River City Ransom would fit into an action game with RPG elements criteria.

Yeah pretty much. I don't know...I might open up something separate from Elements that will literally allow for ANYTHING. We'll see how it works out. I plan to start working on the preliminary stuff in the coming couple weeks with a late-summer re-launch of the site.

I know I would not be of as much help to reviews and previews, but I would not mind helping out with news. I wish I had a better connection that way I could upload media content like I use to. Hyde, let me know if you need any help, man.

Is there any reason why the menu on Vanish/Doom is in alphabetical order? It seems like there could be a better way to organize the links.

Because that's how WordPress works and I really don't have the time to worry about something categorically unimportant.

I wouldn't say that it's categorically unimportant. I think most people would expect to at least see consoles and game genres lumped together, as it is right now it's a bit disorienting at first. It just looks unprofessional, that's all.
I mean how many websites do you know order links by alphabet rather than by usage and association?

It seems like it'd be like the "RPG News" forum we've got now.

Um...no. No it doesn't.
And we don't list things by consoles, we list things by console developers. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. This isn't an information site for people to find a ton of reviews, game art, info, etc....it's a news site with a reviews section and if someone is looking for a specific game, there's a search bar.
As for game genres....uh...there's only one. It's called RPGs.
I mean how many websites do you know order links by alphabet rather than by usage and association?
Several.
For the record nick, I design sites professionally as part of my general job in Art and Design. I know what I'm doing.

I also know what you're doing. Ignoring feedback from a user :p

CtV, don't say that. He does listen to users' feedback eventhough he does not sound like he does. For example, I remember pointing out about the skeleton favicon which was inappropriate, and he did act on it to take it out.
I Pay attention to ALL Feedback...but...I can listen to feedback, disagree, and then not act on it and still have listened. I'm not here to make everyone happy, and attempting so would not only be pointless, but futile since it'll never happen.
There's always going to be people who don't like what you're doing, or don't agree with how you're doing it. Thing is, they're usually not the ones doing the work and therefore can't appreciate the depth, difficulty or scope of what they see vs. what other people see, or the people in charge see. Changing it to look like what Nick wants would be difficult, arduous, and absurd to attempt when the formula as is functions perfectly. We've also had NO other complaints.
Nick apparently likes his interfaces cluttered, or expansive, as AllRPG used to be...but....VanishD isn't AllRPG. We aren't an RPG Resource site. We're a news site, and our configuration depicts that.
Nick will more than likely get his wish with more intricate interfaces and menus when AllRPG comes back.

Wow, talk about overreacting. Nick just asked if there was a reason the links are in alphabetical order. You could have just said "That's how WordPress works" and that would probably be the end of it.
I'll be a little more blunt and say that IMO Vanish Doom looks like a blog. I'm guessing that's what you were going for since you're the professional.

I like the way it looks, but I agree it's a bit silly to have the links in alphabetical order. Maybe my vision is too narrow and uneducated :p

Yep. It is a blog. Same as Kotaku. Same as most reporting sites anymore.
Sad to say, Blogs are the future.
Depressing, isn't it?
AllRPG won't be being a blog.

I understand now that it's a technical limitation, but damn, don't try to pass Wordpress's way of doing things off as your artistic vision. Listing things by console developers doesn't change my point - Bunching Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft together would make far more sense than to have them separated, same way that bunching Misc, MMO, and Tabletop together as specific forms of gaming for those looking for information on those things would make sense.
Again, I know why you're not doing it that way. I'm just saying that ordering by common idea is not that outrageous of a selection, even for a news site, and I don't know why you're trying to brand it as such. Look at CNN - it orders its links logically rather than alphabetically, with US and World News sections together, then links to specific types of news.
Nick apparently likes his interfaces cluttered, or expansive, as AllRPG used to be...but....VanishD isn't AllRPG. We aren't an RPG Resource site. We're a news site, and our configuration depicts that.

Cluttered? I was merely suggesting grouping links by content rather than just name. I understand this is a blog and why it can't be done, but I do think you're misunderstanding the reason why I made the suggestion.
