Official Pokemon Black/White thread

So I got the game yesterday, suck on that US, we got it first (for once).

I haven't had much time to play it (white), but I picked Snivy as mu stater. I probably should have chosen Oshawott though, because I was reviewing the dex and there aren't that many good SPATK water pokemon to choose from, or even Tepig because Simisage is by far the coolest looking monkey.

I've only yet beaten 2 gyms, and right now the thing I'm the most unhappy with is the fact that all the cool looking pokemon seem to be weak unoless they are close to endgame.

I have my starter and have been horing around using different pokemon to see which shoe fits best. I'm not so happy with the ones we are offered at the start.

Although I'm really exited about the rize in power of bug pokemon FINALLY. Bug has always been one of my favourite types, if not my favourite. And although we have seen some nice ones, like Hrecross, Scizor, Yanmega, Ninjask and Vespiquen, they all seemed bland in comparison to this beast:

I'm going to get it. Eventually.

The last Pokemon I played was the original Silver. I'd imagine a lot has changed by now?

Quite a bit, yes. Status wise some pokemon had a few changes through the years, of course there are so many more pokemon now, seeing as you missed out on 3 generations. A lot of new moves have been added and the gameplay has improved a lot, but every pokemon game has its differences in terms of gameplay, the only thing that tends to not change a lot is the battle system, but since you have played double battles have been introduced (2 vs 2) and now we have rotation battles or whatever they are called where you can use 3 pokemon at once. Some pokemon you know from gen 1 and 2 have new evolutions and pre-evolutions, like Chancey, Magmar, Soodowoodo etc. But silver was the pioneer in introducing new twists to the gameplay so I don't think you'll find many of the changes out of place.

It is a great RPG though, this gen has a more interesting storyline, but does this without taking away from the series's charming simplicity. The graphics have improved, but that's really not what you should be looking for in a pokemon game.

I suggest you play diamond/pearl/platinum too. You can skip sapphire/ruby/emerald, in my opinion those are the weakest games in the series. Gen 4 was great and fresh.

I went from Blue to Platinum

I'm considering getting White eventually, but that's probably only if I can find it for $20 or so. Which could take a while since they pretty much never go down in price for some reason o_O

No they wont go down in price. The only way I see you getting the game for that price is if you wait to see it pre-owned in a second hand game store or whatever. Which to be honest might not take too long, I got KH:BBS second hand a week after its release.

I have White Version and my gf got Black.

I have also played Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Diamond, and Heartgold.

So this is more than likely my last Pokemon run through...though I said that about Heartgold too >_>.

I blame my girlfriend and her need to play games together, lol. I can't place the entire blame on her though, I also can't help myself when it comes to this series.

I've played every single game in the series. And when I say every single game, I mean, every version of every gen and every remake. Pokemon has me hooked, and although they are all essentially the same game, I never tire of it. I will play every game released in the series until it dies, which I can't imagine happening.

What starters did everyone pick? I picked snivy first and got through the first two gyms, but then fell in love with sewaddle so I restarted, picked Oshawott and got to the point just before my last playthrough (second badge).

Amazon always cuts a bit from new releases after a short while. I got MVC 3 for 55 bucks bought on feb 25.

Anyway, I havent played a Pokemon hame since Red/ Blue and to be honest there way too many pokemons these days for me to really take that seriously.

I'd like to play it but I sold my DS a few months ago. I really enjoy Pokemon as well.

I picked Snivy and just got the running shoes. haven't really decided on any new additions yet. On the lookout for a decent Flying type though.

you won't find any until you beat the second gym, that's what's shit about this game. You only really get access to a variety of good pokemon after you beat the first 3 gyms, and that's just a few that might fill up 2 maybe 3 places in your party. All the good ones are only found towards the end.

However Unfezant, the main bird of the series is not bad. It's no staraptor but it's better than Pidgeot. There is a good flying psychic you can get after the 3rd badge(not talking about Swoobat, fuck that shit!) called Sigilyph which looks super cool, but the HM fly would be wasted on it since it's an SP Attacker.

Later on you can also get Braviary, much much later on.

I say just train Snivy up, the first gym is whatever type your starter is weak against, so that will be fire, since you picked Snivy this woman of the right of the city of the first gym will give you a Panpour, the water monkey, so you can beat the gym. That's a good pokemon, Probably the 3rd best water pokemon in the game. After that you'll get access to a lot more pokemon, it's only the first gym that's a little blah. When you get to the town with the second gym there is some tall grass on the left side where you can find a variety of pokemon. Before going to the city with the second gym you will also have access to the pokemon that evolves into Unfezant and some other good ones.

I don't have Snivy anymore, I traded it for an Oshawott. I will update my team in my sig in a minute.

My absolute favourite though is Archeops. I'm having that as my flying once I get it.

This is the most complained thing about pokemon. I for one like it that they try to expand the game's horizons, it gives the universe some believability. Believability is something pokemon establishes quite well I think, an obvious aspect of this is the fact that you don't go through the whole planet in order to complete it (how many RPGs actually do that?). The mechanics are always expanded and a lot of things get fixed with new games. Also after gen 4 it become more about the game's capacity to be an online competitive game, which suits it amazingly well since the game is greatly reliant on battle tactics and has almost innumerate capacity for creativity in terms of builds, this myriad of possibilities blow even the most tactical games like the SMT series out of the water. Yes online variety is not amazing, but people can be surprising with what they come up with, which only goes to prove how the game can surprise you.

I think all these additions to the game are definitely beneficial and improve the gameplay with every gen. I do think there are a lot of pokemon, but the whole concept of pokemon is variety, 150 was a number they threw around in the beginning, and it just presented the franchise as this thing that had great variety in characters/monsters, but as time passed 150 wasn't so much for variety, so they added more, and so on. The fact that so many new pokemon exist strengthens this concept of variety.

I just made it to Route 4, all my pokemon around level 24.

Drilbur, Victini, and Pignite are my mains. Thank god there aren't any powerful water pokemon (yet) or I would be fucked. I also got a Venipede in training and a Sawk and Timburr competing for my attention
