Steve Jobs Is Dead?

Nope, but Bloomberg News thought he was.

News, for the most part is a worthless media anymore.

Reminds me of when Zack Morris on Saved by the Bell was thought to be dead from a motorcycle accident. I was happy as a child because I knew I had a better shot with Kelly.

I love vista so much over XP it's not funny. Most of the flak Vista has been getting is due to compatibility issues with some pieces of software, which was expected because unlike XP, vista doesn't like the idea that general usage software should be run as admin/root because it gives that program read/write privileges over system files.

I also like that Vista is still ahead of Apple in the 64-bit computing department with its kernel. Snow Leopard will put OSX on par with Vista64. The new audio mixer is also greater for running multiple audio sources at a single time. I can game with it's specific audio lower than Winamp without much configuring.

Aside from that, despite Jobs heading a corporation that takes pre-existing technology and puts a glossy coat on it, it's not exactly in good taste to hope for his demise.

I doubt anybody really wants either of them dead. Just wish they would quit fleecing the public, exactly how many billions do you need. XP was and still is a good OS but I much prefer open source. Sadly, Microsoft owns such a large percentage of the running OS's out there. That makes it hard to get everything you need for OS's like Linux. I don't have any problem with a company making money, but Microsoft is the epitome of greed. They could have just kept supporting XP and even adding functionality. They wouldn't have lost money. On the bright side for me, my company has made good money UPGRADING PC's and Laptops from Vista to XP

It's a resource hog, but that's nothing turning off some useless crap doesn't fix.

Hyde, if you get a machine that is correctly setup for Vista, it runs OK. It is much slower than a XP machine with the same hardware specs. The biggest problem with Vista is trying to install 3rd party software such as medical software, legal software, etc and thrying to install any hardware you might have had from your last PC. If you want to go out and buy a whole new PC with all new hardware that is Vista compatible, then you might be OK. That is if you don't use any older proprietary software. Eventually, these software companies will all catch up. MY main bitch about it is that XP worked just fine. This was just something to fleece the public for even more money.

I remember a time not too long ago when people were complaining about XP Service Pack 2 compliance. Compatibility problems isn't nothing new for any operating system actually. Between the limited peripheral and software options on OSX and the obligation of Linux developers to have to reverse engineer drivers makes the entire "it just works" idea fleeting.

Microsoft isn't forcing people to upgrade to Vista, obviously, they are making newer systems adopt their newest OS because its their new OS and don't want to alienate their consumers with "obsolete" software. It never raised prices on PCs (PC prices have become criminally low).

I've benchmarked my laptop on XP and Vista (w/ and w/o SP1). I've found my laptop to be actually fastest on SP1 vista over the other platforms with the exception of sustained network speeds. Also, the added power management features on Vista gets me an extra half hour on battery.

While all you are saying is true, it still means that it is getting harder to get XP on a new machine. It has also added so many new headaches for the end user. They had gotten XP to where most people were familiar with it and it has very few issues. They could have kept making XP and kept selling it. They could have added content to it, if people wanted any new "bells and whistles". While leaving the rest of the PC world alone.

I work in telecom/datacom and we have a similar problem with our telephony equipment provider. They had a perfectly good working system that had all the features you would ever need. Instead of continuing to manufacture this product, they scrapped it and came out with a buggy non-functional product. Yes, they may get all the issues worked out but they lost a large customer in us and many others in the process.

While you and I may not have too many problems working around Vista's issues, most of the general public do not have that knowledge. It goes back to the old idiom "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
